25.01.2022 I made a lovely tea yesterday - a bit of an experiment, I just wanted something nice and bit soothing to drink, and it's good for my tummy problems (from years of undiagnosed Coeliac disease and subsequent diverticulosis. Equal parts by volume (of dried herbs) plantain (plantago major), common mallow (Malvaceae spp - the purple flowered variety), Reships, elderflower (Sambucus spp), Linden flower aka Lime Blossom (Tilia spp), Hops (Humulus lupus), and Rosellas (Hibiscus sabdariffa). It turned out delicious, needs no sweetener, very refreshing. It'll be staying on the list!

20.01.2022 Remedy for childhood diarrhoea caused by travel, excitement and irritation of the mucus membranes from eating lots of junk: equal parts by volume of Meadowsweet (one of the best digestive remedies for anything digestive - heartburn, ulcers etc) and Lady's mantle (also used to control excessive menstrual bleeding). Steep as tea, sweeten with honey (also soothing to the membranes) and drink often.

18.01.2022 Something a little different herbal today - focussing on your dogs and cats. Did you know you can make your own gastritis and tartar busting mix? A year or so ago my Honey cat had very foul breath and badly discoloured (brown) teeth from tartar (plaque) buildup. I found a reference on the web to a product called Plaque Off, but it was extremely expensive. The best price I could find was $25 for just 40g, plus postage. Considering we have 5 cats, it just wasn’t feasible. I... did a little research into the formulation and made up my own. As a herbalist, I buy a lot of bulk herbs. My supplier had Atlantic kelp ($20 per kilogram - now $27.70) and Brewer’s yeast ($6.90 for 250gm), and I bought L-Lysine at the health food store (can’t remember the price). I added L-Lysine as it is anecdotally purported to support a healthy immune system and recommended for responsive conditions, and is also claimed to help support respiratory health and helps maintain normal eye function and health. Our Farida has bad snuffles, although the vet has cleared her of any major infections etc. You will need: Atlantic kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum D1070 is recommended) Brewer’s yeast (10%) for palatability only (If you are using this for dogs, omit the yeast) L-Lysine (20%) Mix the ingredients at the scale shown and store in an airtight jar. The proportions do not have to be perfect, just keep in the range. The formula works systemically minimising a variety of mouth ailments such as plaque, tartar, and bad breath. It is helpful for stomatitis as it greatly diminishes plaque, which is most often the cause of stomatitis symptoms. In cats, one of the major symptoms of stomatitis is drooling. NOTE: NOT recommended for cats with thyroid conditions without prior approval from your vet. Kelp contains iodine which can affect the thyroid. To administer, I sprinkle 1/8th teaspoon over the morning wet food. (Dogs would need more - my cats average 4-5 kgs, so scale it up to your dog’s weight.) I saw an improvement in Honey’s teeth after a few weeks, and in her breath after a little longer. You’ll initially think it is not working, but persevere. After a few months you will suddenly realise the cats teeth are much whiter and cleaner and their breath is sweet. I no longer have to hold my breath when Honey wants to give me a kiss. Unfortunately, the L-Lysine has not been very effective on helping Farida’s sniffles - but, hey, her teeth are and breath are great!

18.01.2022 I use weeds/flowers and seeds from the garden all the time. Plantain, dandelion, yarrow, nasturtium and lots of others. Try them, you may get a pleasant surprise. Put a SMALL sample on your tongue (1/2 a leaf size if small, leaf tip if large), if it burns or is unpleasant, spit it out and rinse your mouth. If it seems OK, eat it and watch for any adverse signs. This is how our ancestors worked out what was safe and what wasn't. This is for leafy plants only - NEVER do taste testing of fungi, if in doubt, check with an expert before consuming. Some fungi can start organ destruction with a very small sample.

18.01.2022 Drink herbal tea

15.01.2022 I WANT YOUR WEEDS! It is the time of the year when Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is growing, and I want yours! It starts flowering round November, usually, so if you notice this in your garden in Hobart, PLEASE let me come and remove it for you, rather then consigning it to the compost. (Note it comes in yellow and pink too, but I have only seen the white variety here so far.) It is one of the best herbs for an apothecary shelf, and while I had a little growing last year, I can't see any coming up this year. All the aerial parts are used, so you generally pick in flower and dry, before chopping up.

11.01.2022 Juniper berries are good medicine, wonderful for urinary tract health. Not so sure about the gin soaked raisins, but if you had enough of them you wouldn't feel any pain, anyway :)

09.01.2022 This year Warwick and I have had one bout of URTI early in the year, we coughed badly for 2 weeks and mildly for about 4-5. That's it. NO FLU! I firmly believe the daily morning dose of my Cold & Flu tea kept us protected. Now Spring is here we are being more vigilant then ever, as the late flus and colds are the worst. Try it for yourself, the recipe is on this site and you just get it made up wherever you find a good herbalist. http://www.smh.com.au//2015-a-record-year-for-flu-cases-20
