23.01.2022 Nigel Sharp (Chair) and Annette Rypalski (Biodiversity Director) feature on the first podcast episode by the NSW Government's Saving Our Species program (they do so many good things!). We love hearing from both of these champions for wildlife. They talk about the 'business of biodiversity' which is the cornerstone and mission of Odonata. We truly believe that business is a major tool for positive biodiversity, climate and social impact, and key to inspiring Australians to li...ve a healthy life in harmony with nature. Plans are underway to share our story more and we hope you are inspired to keep pursuing your nature first solutions. The podcast was created by one of our Wild Idea participants who are doing great things - Grow Love Project Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre NSW Government Threatened Species Commissioner

21.01.2022 Odonata is excited to announce that pre-registration is now open for the Rewild Run at Mt Rothwell. This is a great opportunity to explore Mt Rothwell, Victoria’s largest feral predator-free ecosystem, home to a wealth of threatened species that you won’t encounter outside of this safe haven. On Saturday 4 September, 150 runners will be invited to take on a 41km route through the sanctuary. The course will be broken down into 10km loops, so you can tackle it on your own or a...lternatively in teams of two or four, you may even be lucky enough to see some Southern Brush-tailed Rock Wallabies, Eastern Barred Bandicoots or Eastern Quolls along the way. We are proud to partner with For Wild Places for this event that will help raise funds for the ongoing rehabilitation of threatened species at Mt Rothwell and their safe relocation to new areas. For further information, please visit the official event page : https://fb.me/e/1kXK6GQ1P Thank you to our partners For Wild Places for making this possible.

16.01.2022 This week we got to experience a momentous occasion with all our partners and friends that has been almost a decade in the making. The first founding outcrossed Eastern Barred Bandicoots shot into grasslands at our new Tiverton sanctuary on the mainland for the first time in twenty thousand years! This is only the third time outcrossing has been undertaken to increase genetic diversity in threatened species populations in Australia. This has been done under guidance of expert... advice from Melbourne University who reconnected populations from Tasmania and Victoria to diversify and enhance fitness and overall survival of the bandicoot. We have reclaimed a thousand hectares from invasive predators which include the fox and cat and expect the entire ecosystem to finally recover. Local populations of dunnarts, brolgas, growling grass frogs all expected to boom! This conservation model on the Tiverton property integrates sustainable farming to enhance native grassland diversity and also to manage weeds. This generates revenue to deliver a sustainable business model for critical threatened species recovery. This site will eventually breed bandicoots to capacity which is expected to peak beyond 3,000 bandicoots, effectively reaching our target for the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery Team. The work doesn’t stop here. There is much to do to manage and maintain the species to ensure we don’t track backwards and the species will require ongoing support from our friends, partners and government institutions. We cannot do this without the support of the Recovery Team and our partners and supporters. Mostly we would like to thank Nigel Sharp, Mt Rothwell staff and volunteers, Harry Youngman, Mike Day and Tim Hill at Tiverton Rothwell Partners, Dr Andrew Weeks at Melbourne University, Richard Hill at DELWP, Jenny Gray at Zoos Vic and Brad Blake (and team) at ProCon. A special thanks to the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation for undertaking the smoking ceremony on the night. The Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery Team is a voluntary collaboration of conservation organisations and includes funding and resources from the following; Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre The University of Melbourne Zoos Victoria Phillip Island Nature Parks Corangamite Catchment Management Authority Glenelg Hopkins CMA National Landcare Program Sussan Ley MP Lily D'Ambrosio MP We greatly thank-you for your support and contribution which has resulted in this wonderful outcome. 02.01.2022 Eastern barred bandicoots were heading for extinction on the mainland. In the early 2000s, 40 wild individuals were caught from the last wild population at Hami...lton, Victoria and brought into a captive breeding program to try to boost numbers. Genetic analysis later found that only 19 of these bred successfully. With such a small population inbreeding and a lack of genetic diversity became a problem over the generations, reducing the health, breeding success and resilience of the population. Fortunately, wild and healthy populations of this bandicoot are still found in Tasmania. A partnership between The University of Melbourne, Mt Rothwell and other partners has introduced healthy genes from Tasmanian animals through breeding. The increased genetic diversity is improving the health and breeding success of animals. This is important to give the mainland population a greater chance of long-term survival. This Threatened Species Recovery Hub is a collaboration between The University of Melbourne and Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre. It receives support from the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Victoria, FUNDER@Melbourne, Zoos Victoria and the Douglas family foundation.

01.01.2022 Have you heard of the Pterostylis ventricosa? Neither have we. That’s why #SavingourSpecies is calling on the NSW public to help this critically endangered orchid, and seven other ‘forgotten’ threatened plant species, by coming up with some catchy common names to give them some well-deserved love and attention. So get naming! All suggestions are welcome particularly those that recognise the living history of our Indigenous people and their connection to the land on which th...ese threatened species are found. Submissions for the ‘Name Our Species’ competition are open now and will close tomorrow! To enter, visitsavingourspecies.online/nameourspecies

01.01.2022 We are excited to be a partner of the mobile wildlife hospital with the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital. We have launched a fundraising campaign today - please help us spread the word. The mobile hospital forms a key part of our Sanctuary Network as it will provide veterinary support for our wildlife but also be a key response resource for Bushfires.

01.01.2022 A fantastic day at Orana Farm yesterday with our partners CJ Arms and Tiverton Agriculture Impact Fund, working together to begin scoping our fish ladder. Our planned fish ladder will help to improve fish flow in the Loddon River, which passes through Orana, providing a pathway for fish to use to travel around the weir in this picture. The basic concept of a fish ladder is that it allows fish to pass around a barrier by swimming through a series of gaps, slots or ponds that control the velocity of the water. Fish ladders also offer fish an opportunity to migrate, which is vital for them to spawn, feed and seek refuge.
