23.01.2022 I was doing a little research on how long it takes a habit-good or bad-to form, and it seems like no one really knows. I found as little as 21 days to a high of... 500 days. The exact number doesn’t really matter, because now that it is time to give them up, or at least moderate my level of indulgence, I started to think about which ones I would miss the most, and the list is pretty substantial! Here what I will miss the most on my way back to fit: - Ben and Jerry's Netflix & Chill'd dairy-free ice cream. (This became my best friend on many occasions!) - Bread. I used to never eat bread. Now, I am not sure how I will function without it - Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Doesn't need any explanation. - Sugary Creamers in my Coffee. Coffee is going to taste terrible for awhile without this. - Soda. An easy habit to get in to. Probably hard to get out of. - Ice cold beer (It's 5 o'clock somewhere right). I just might have to keep this one going. - Pasta. Like bread, how did I live without it. I will also miss being able to eat my emotions. (More surprising is the realization that this actually works) I will miss being lazy and not exercising. I will miss sleeping in. I will miss all the delicious holiday food. Despite the fact that I will miss all of these foods and bad habits, what I miss more than all of them is the feeling of being healthy. That feeling is what will motivate me on my road back to fit, because feeling healthy, at the end of the day far outweighs the joy I get from eating delicious ice cream or sleeping in. I know that good health makes it easier for me to be my best self, not only for me but for those that are around me. It is important to remember though that the road back to fit is not all black and white. People don’t do well when they are told never again. So we will be looking at certain habits with an eye towards moderation, not elimination. At the end of the day, how long it takes to form a particular habit doesn’t really matter that much. Whether it takes 50 days or 500 days, you have to put the work in either way. The only way to get to day 500 is to start with Day 1. And we will all be starting at Day 1 in just a few weeks!
