19.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE 29 March 2019 OEC Scholarships kickstart studies for local students Three students from the Orana region are now studying for tertiary qualifications that could change their lives thanks to a generous kickstart from the OEC Scholarship Fund. Darcee Nixon, 19 of Gollan, 27 -year-old Frankie Rutherford of Dubbo and Swastika Sharma, 18, from Dubbo started their studies this year with the backing of the local charitable organisation, which has a history in traini...ng and education dating back to the 1970s. OEC Scholarships are valued at $10,000 per year for the duration of a recognised course through a university or recognised training organisation. Darcie has been funded for four years to study an honours degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Newcastle, while Frankie received a three-year scholarship to complete her studies in Community Services at Charles Sturt University in Dubbo, while also undertaking training at TAFE. Swastika is a Nepalese migrant who made a commitment to forging a career and a future in Australia when she became an Australian citizen in January this year. She received a one-off $10,000 from ESP Accounting through the OEC Gift Fund, which will support her in her first year of studies for a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree at Macquarie University. Chair of the OEC Board, Andrew Rose, said the scholarship fund was established a number of years ago to help break through the barriers to education. In that time, it has invested $39,300 into the education of a number of students in the last 5 years. The scholarships reflect on OEC’s history, from its establishment by a group of teachers as a support resource to its role as an employment and training organisation. While OEC is no longer a training provider itself, the Board is keen to contribute to education in the region and we believe in giving opportunities to students who might otherwise either not make it to university or struggle to meet the costs of completing their TAFE qualifications. Through their applications, both Darcee and Frankie have shown us that these scholarships will help them overcome the challenges they have already faced in their lives. Scholarship recipients are expected to report back to the Board each year and mentor other local students so they see that tertiary studies are not completely out of their reach. These scholarships are a way for us to help remove some of the barriers that young adults in our region face when considering tertiary studies, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and families where furthering their education might not have been encouraged or affordable, Mr Rose said. The OEC Gift Fund is also a pathway for local businesses to give somebody a kickstart in their tertiary education through a recognised charity organisation. For more information about how to become involved in the OEC Gift Fund, contact Sharon Portelli at ESP Accounting in Dubbo on 6884 9000.
19.01.2022 With a focus on breaking the cycle of disadvantage through education, the Orana Education and Training Co-operative (OEC) has announced a second scholarship fund after its successful implementation last year. In a move aimed at addressing the financial barriers that restrict access to education and employment for disadvantaged country students, $10,000 per year of study will be granted to a student from the Orana region in a bid to close the gap in tertiary education affordab...ility in rural NSW. OEC Chair Megan Dixon said applications were now being taken and mature age students were encouraged to apply. We are offering this scholarship for the whole of the student’s course, so it is likely to make the difference in whether or not students can afford to live away from home or travel regularly to study, Mrs Dixon said. This fund is open to TAFE apprentices and trainees, as well as people studying at a university. Commencing students and those who are part way through any course at an accredited Australian university or Registered Training Organisation - including trainees and apprentices - are welcome to apply. The Board will mentor the scholarship recipient along the way in the hope that these recipients will engage with their community during their studies to inspire others to pursue their educational goals, Mrs Dixon said. We are looking for people who are passionate about their region and want to make a difference, as well as people who may have to put an education on hold for financial reasons. It is aimed at people from western NSW of all ages who are struggling to afford tertiary studies and are willing to encourage other people in their communities to follow their education dreams. To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, the student must be enrolled to vote in the electorate covered by one of the following local government areas Bourke, Brewarrina, Cobar, Bogan, Walgett, Warren, Coonamble, Narromine, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Wellington, Warrumbungle (or eligible to enrol if they are under 18 years old). Applications close on 5 February 2016 and can be lodged by mail or by completing the online application form at www.oec.org.au.
