24.01.2022 Seriously, what a crap week so far. Late Monday it seemed I picked up a virus from God knows where and I went down bad like a ton of manure. Lots of Chinese herbal medicine along with some synthetics, wearing thick winter clothing and going to bed and trying to sweat it out appeared to have worked. My best mate, Bill, came down for his morning coffee on Wednesday and I was okay. Still a tad seedy but around 10am it hit me like a shovel; this time even worse. A quick call to ...my GP and organized some antibiotics and today I am feeling a tad light-headed but better. I hate going to hospitals as people tend to die there and subsequently I am a firm believer in the old quote Physician heal thyself. Subsequently, the paddocks have suffered from my absence. Thanks be to thee the person who invented wetting agents! Anyway, I am walking around [of sorts] and eating again albeit in small portions and so this weekend it will be a case of light pottering around here and there. Unfortunately it will be 37c tomorrow and so it will be up with the sun as usual for me.

22.01.2022 Years ago I was given a Valerian plant. It died and came back several times and since pairing it in the same pot as an Australian Tree Fern, it has gone beserk in its growth. This morning I noticed it had flowered for the first time. I did some research on Wikipedia and found it quite interesting. Heres the extract: Although valerian is a popular herbal medicine used for treating insomnia, there is no good evidence it is effective for this purpose, and there is some concern it may be harmful. There is no good evidence that valerian is helpful in treating restless leg syndrome, or anxiety] There is insufficient evidence for efficacy and safety of Valerian for anxiety disorders

21.01.2022 I dont know what happened to spring. Who pinched it? I got it. The spring equinox is today and of course this should mean more nice sunny days to come. Thats if winter will let it happen. The one good thing to occur this week is the hairy hungry caterpillars are lessening in their presence in the paddock. The little blighters had a damn good feed of all my 600 Chilli plants and the numerous varieties of Hollyhocks. I just might get lucky planting another 500 seeds of each a...nd have them ready for sale later in summer. The main front garden bed is coming to a colourful life with masses of Ranuculas, Lily of the Valley, Snowdrops, Daffodils and Irises. There is an assortment of other flowers appearing from bulbs I must have missed when I turned the soil and renewed it at the beginning of winter. Its amazing what good, rich compost and manure does to amass worms galore! Well, there is a break in todays rain and back into the potting shed I go. Its getting time to prepare the Dahlia bulbs for planting next month.
20.01.2022 "Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle ... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. And the anticipation nurtures our dream." - Barbara Winkler
18.01.2022 Enough of this rain I say. The tanks are overflowing and the grounds are soaked. Now what I need is a lot of sunshine to promote healthy growth in all the seedlings and of course the hundreds of various seeds I have planted. Its not that I am running out of space but rather I have planted more seeds than I normally do this time of year. Not only that, I have already prepared the summer flowering bulbs ready for planting but the ground is still too cold and wet. Next will be the autumn flowering bulbs. Oh well, the warmer weather will soon be upon us.....
18.01.2022 Something I found on Facebook that epitomises everything in my opinion....
18.01.2022 From the Green Linnet. Beneath these fruit-tree boughs that shed Their snow-white blossoms on my head, With brightest sunshine round me spread... 16.01.2022 I adore geometric shapes and colours in all plants and especially succulents. Although not a total fanatic about succulents like a lot of people I know, my collection will suffice and occupies a small corner of the rear garden
16.01.2022 My latest addition to the pergola area is this variegated Pisonia or if you want to be latinised Pisonia brunnonianum. The shrub grows to a height of 3m and likes filtered light making it ideal for an indoor plant. Me thinks yes whereas the good wife is thinking no because there are already too many plants inside. Ho hum.

14.01.2022 We are blessed here in Perth with our own natural, botanical wonderland in Kings Park. The wildflowers are abundant this time of the year and a majority endemic to Western Australia only. The variety of species is mindboggling and the beauty, breathtaking..

13.01.2022 What a crazy and busy two weeks I have had but, delightful. This time I have spent collecting, packaging and storing seeds and of course working in the paddock. I love the bush this time of year and as summer approaches a lot of my time will be spent walking in the Warwick bushland collecting what I can. There was an unfortunate incident where fire has devastated one third of it last week and the police suspect vandals. Why do idiots enjoy destroying all that is beautiful. So much is in full bloom in the paddock and my old Christmas cactus I grew from a pup has flowered delightfully again. It never fails me. The 3 metre Star jasmine is in full bloom and the perfume is incredible. This week you will find me pottering around, staying out of the sun and no doubt putting a few seeds down.
12.01.2022 There are several reasons I set up this page, Of the Earth, but I suppose the main one being to sell the plants I grow or source from other plant lovers. One of the most natural, soul inspiring actions one can do in life is to create a living thing from a seed or cutting and watch it blossom, come to life, if you like. There are so many beautiful things in this world one can do but to belong to the earth and create from it is the ultimate in my opinion. Naturally I will showcase many of the different plants that come from the earth in my paddock and indeed all matters botanical as well as post many photos for you. We all live on a planet that is so precious and its up to us not only to care for it but to respect all living things that come from the earth and live upon it

10.01.2022 Roughly 30 kilometres south of Perth is the fabulous Araluen Botanical Park located in Roleystone. The park is in the valley of the Darling Ranges and is one of my favourite places to relax in natural bush surrounds and enjoy a day out. Once a year the park has Springtime in Araluen. Literally thousands of tulips and other botanical specimens are in full bloom.

09.01.2022 Of the earth will be at Wanneroo Swapmarket sunday 3rd Feb. With a great load of plants to freshen up your gardens. Dont forget to ask Barrie about his fragipanis growning strong at home. Just follow the main road in and ask for Barrie.
07.01.2022 Spring is my favourite time of the year when all the native plants and trees in my garden are in full flower with spectacular colourful blooms. The bees are kept busy dancing from bloom to bloom and the native birds join me in delighting in the coloured extravaganza.
07.01.2022 I had two tasks today. One was to trim back hard a white bougainvillea that I neglected to do in July due to commitments and the second, to weed and clear a 10 metre by 3 metre section on the upper level at the rear of the paddock. Not being too warm, I donned the usual protective gear and slowly but surely made my way from the bottom to the crest. The more I clipped the more the bougainvillea fought back with savage revenge. The temperature started to rise and when you are w...earing thick trousers, a thick long-sleeved shirt, welding gloves and protective glasses, it became hotter than Hades. It was time to strip off and take my chances in shorts. Bad move. The bougainvillea seemed to know of my lack of clothing and vengeance was hers. Two hours later the job was done and I was left bleeding and in need of a cuppa. Feeling better I tackled the weeding. By then it was 33c. And they knew. Not the weeds. They appeared out of nowhere and tried to get into almost every orifice in my body. No matter how much the Australian salute was performed, I may as well been waving like the Queen of England. Undeterred by this invasion, I reached for salvation from the invasion. Bring on the Aeroguard!
07.01.2022 Its good having the missus back except for when she gets in the garden with a pair of secateurs in her hands. Although she liked the new setup in the pergola area, it was decided by her that a womans touch was needed and proceeded to rearrange everything. The paddocks are my domain but it seems the pergola area is now well and truly hers
06.01.2022 With tumbled hair of swarms of bees, And flower robes dancing in the breeze, With sweet, unsteady lotus-glances, Intoxicated, Spring advances. - from a Sanskrit poem
03.01.2022 Earlier in winter I decided to be absolutely brutal with the pink Gaura lindheimeri that had absolutely gone beserk in one of the front garden beds. By that I mean it just spread outwards and upwards and began to overtake all the other plants. Out with the pruning secateurs and right down to the ground it went. After, I took to it with a tomahawk and split it in half of which I potted one up. I figured if it dies, then although thats not okay, it had given me pleasure over t...he years and enhanced the beauty of my garden bed with masses of pink flowers. So, last week I noticed all these new shoots on the one I had brutalized and even better, the one I potted up also had new shoots. Even better than that, yesterday as I walking around the front garden I noticed all these new plants popping up everywhere. It had seeded off when I did the hack job. It was akin to Day of the Triffids! Needless to say all these new seedlings were potted up and I will have them for sale soon. I love the Gaura lindheimeri as it seems to hold its flower continuously through most of the seasons and does look quite spectacular.
02.01.2022 Like most of my fellow gardeners I have spent the last four days making most of this glorious sunshine whilst its still a tad cool. My days have been long, up at dawn and dont finish working until dusk. Its always nice to see the fruits of ones labour maturing and everything in full bloom. There is still much to do in preparation for the summer planting and also autumn. The Bouganvillea are a mass of colour. I dont know about you people but all the Calistemons are in ful...l bloom and everywhere I have been last week its the same. Living north of the river, by now the yellow-tailed black cockatoos have decimated, or in the process of, chewing their way through the blooms and leaving a mess on the ground. Up to now, I have only seen one or two and not a flock. This I find exceedingly strange. Actually, when I think about it, with all the housing development in the northern corridor its no wonder there are hardly any around. The murderous developers have destroyed so much natural habit and the ecosystems within leaving absolute zero for our native wildlife. All I can do is enjoy my paddock with all its greenery and blooms, pray to Mother Nature that some semblance of sanity prevails and patiently wait that sometime soon I will see and hear one of my favourite native birds.
01.01.2022 Hi Folks. Indeed I am back after a long sojourn in which there were a lot of ups and downs. I wont bore you with the details as we have all gone through it at one time or another in our lives. Needless to say, I am better than ever and raring to tackle the paddocks. Spring, so far, has been productive and even though we are going into the warmer months it is still a great time to be out there getting dirty hands and loving the blooms. My best friend Bill Vanderplas came down last Saturday and decided to take on a job I had been pondering for quite some time. The very large winter potting shed was annoying me and Bill gave it a makeover. Looking excellent! Now the shed is appealing to the eye and with the Chinese star jasmine in full bloom I will be adding a few more scented climbers.
