25.01.2022 Needing a camp toilet? This article looks at all the different types of camping toilet and some of the pros and cons of each. https://offgridcamping.com.au/camp-toilet-guide/

23.01.2022 Prepping for a 3 day 4WD trip next week! Already trying work out what we can cull from the list so we can still fit the kids in car What essentials do you take with you no matter what??

22.01.2022 Camp Oven Slow cooked Beef Stew with dumplings Another great prepared dinner meal for that first night of camping. I used this basic recipe and just adapted the cooking time to the fire; https://www.taste.com.au//1287ba81-dcac-4d42-b2e9-bf8e61ee... If you haven’t heard of Dump meals before here is your introduction. Basically you are putting all your ingredients in a ziplock bag or container and the only thing you have to do is then ‘dump’ the contents into a slow cooker, or this case camp oven and let it cook! These can be frozen so are perfect to take out camping with you as they will just naturally defrost without spoiling and helping keep other food cool at the same time. Keep an eye on your stew as its cooking and give it a stir every now and again. I had to add some water every so often as it was cooking quicker than I expected. I also premade the dumpling dough and stored it in a lidded bowl. I added the dumplings about 15 minutes before serving and they were the perfect topping to this stew!! I’ve made this stew many times in the oven but cooked over the fire, gave it a truely delicious Smokey flavour that just couldn’t be achieved otherwise!

20.01.2022 We LOVE cooking in our camp oven but it can be a tricky thing to get clean if you have cooked a stew or something of the likes in it. Burnt bits don’t want to come off and any good camp oven cook will tell you that soaking the oven is not an option! You buy all kinds of tools and oils to clean them but this is the easiest, quickest and by far the most frugal way I’ve found! Currently have our camp oven in our oven doing a re-season ready for a weekend of glorious weathered camping!

20.01.2022 Nature cubby building at Chookaloo (Kuitpo forest, Meadows) campground this weekend! There’s also Some amazing nature cubbies built by previous campers in the forest if you are just wanting to have a look and play! #natureplay

19.01.2022 We managed to get everything in the car and still have room for the children... Just! If anyone knows how to convince kids they don’t need take every toy they own I’d love to know your secrets!

16.01.2022 We made these for dessert the other weekend while camping! So delicious! Just fill your waffle ice cream cone with fruit, chocolate and marshmallows, wrap in foil and heat up over the fire. We used a grill this time but have previously just laid them on coals. Just keep them rotating or they tend to get a bit burnt. Crispy waffle cone, warm, melted sweet filling pefect! ... 16.01.2022 Kids travel snack boxes! Just simple plastic bolts and screws compartment box (think these ones were from Kmart for a few dollars). Keeps snacks organised and means you can pack many different things while saving on space and annoying packaging and containers that end up just floating around the car. Our boys get one of these whenever we travel over several days. It Means I’m not constantly dealing out snacks and getting a I don’t like this response one of my favourite kids travelling hacks for sure!

15.01.2022 We love Nature crafts when we are out camping! While having 3 boys means they are generally happy to just roam around getting dirty and climbing trees it’s sometimes nice to have a back up activity to give them while we are getting dinner ready or just trying to relax for a few minutes. We combined two activities on our last camping trip; a good old scavenger hunt that then used the findings to create nature name art. I prepped the scavenger hunt bags and names before we le...ft. Just brought along some glue and the kids were more than happy for a bit while we sat with a cup of tea I have done quite a few scavenger hunts with my kids but I loved this one as it didn’t put any constraints on what they had to look for. So much easier for younger kids as well! See more

13.01.2022 KMART BEACH TROLLEY The Kmart Foldable Beach Trolley has become our camping saviour! We use this thing constantly. When bush camping it’s handy for lugging gear from the car to the campsite or collecting wood, while still having room to hold a kid or 2. ... When camping in caravan parks we use it to take the kids to the bathrooms at shower time, playgrounds, if we are cooking in the camp kitchen we can load everything up and take everything over from the caravan easily. Of course it’s also fabulous for its main purpose of taking all those piles of towels and beach toys down to the beach. We also just use it for day trips out and about. Our pram doesn’t fit in easily in our 2nd car. The bonus of the trolley is that it folds down flat so can be thrown in a boot easily. We can easily fit 2 kids plus bags and jackets. We have even squeezed 3 kids in on occasion. We have been stopped constantly since we started using it, with people enquiring were we got it from. It really is so handy. This style is also extremely affordable! You can get one here: https://www.kmart.com.au/prod/foldable-beach-trolley/911469

10.01.2022 Is it a swag or a tent? https://offgridcamping.net/adventure-kings-big-daddy-delux/

08.01.2022 If you’re looking for swags to take your camping of grid easily the Kings Big Daddy Deluxe are amazing! We love ours so much our poor caravan barely gets used anymore! The kids were pretty excited for their first video so mind the interruptions! A full write up on the big Daddy Deluxe is on the Blog.

04.01.2022 Chookaloo campground, Kuitpo Forest, Meadows **Not a sponsored post. Just our own experience** We have camped at Chookaloo a few times now and love it. Bush setting campground, no power but with long drop/Eco toilets. Each site is well numbered and has an existing fire pit. Some also have picnic tables and log seating around the fire. ... We love the natural setting Chookaloo has to offer as well as the beautiful nature walks available through the forest. For camping with young kids it’s perfect. Open areas to explore but hard to get lost. If you take a walk through the forest you will find enormous nature cubbies built by school groups and previous campers to play in. Our boys have seen kangaroos, Emu’s and Koalas. The koalas can be quite vocal at night if you have never heard a koala’s mating call they kind of sound like a demonic monster! But it’s all part of the experience. There’s a couple of bakeries, hardware store and small grocery store in the centre of town about 5 minutes away if you run out of anything (or like me last time we camped, forget to bring nappies) The best part is that sites start at $10 a night for 2 adults, with kids (over 2) being an extra $2 a night each. So for us it’s $16 a night! Which is hard to beat. Literally the only issue we have had is that by the end of a busy weekend the toilets are quite smelly. Like hold your breath and try not to gag smelly. But it’s better than a hole in the ground! You will also need to bring your own wood. You are allowed to collect wood from the forest but only from the floor. You can’t cut anything down. There’s plenty of small kindling but nothing big enough to keep a fire going. You can book online at: https://www.forestrysa.com.au Here you pay and choose the site you would like from an interactive map. All the sites at Chookaloo in our opinion are pretty good. However, if you have the chance take a day trip over and have a look to see what will suit your needs best before booking for a weekend stay. The site, however, doesn’t work on IOS devices Laptop has worked best for us. If your looking for cheap, easy get away not far from the city and central to the Adelaide Hills Chookaloo is absolutely perfect!
