13.01.2022 I thought I would share this. VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ this. I was called this week with the same MO! This is directly from the ATO! Scammers fake ATO phon...e numbers There is a current scam involving pre-recorded robocalls impersonating the ATO and threatening immediate arrest for an unpaid tax debt. The scammers use a technology known as spoofing to show a genuine ATO number on the caller ID. Please let your staff and clients know if they receive one of these calls or a voicemail, to hang up or delete it. If your client has shared personal information or has made a payment to a scammer, encourage them to call our dedicated scam line on 1800 008 540. Remind your clients we will never: issue a pre-recorded message (robocall) to their phone present a phone number on caller ID threaten immediate arrest, jail or deportation for unpaid tax debts demand immediate payment of a tax debt by direct credit to a personal bank account, via iTunes or Google Play cards, pre-paid Visa cards, or cryptocurrency refuse to allow them to speak with a trusted advisor or regular tax agent attempt to keep them on the line until they make a payment. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, using technology that allows them to replicate caller IDs, websites and email addresses. The best way to protect your clients against scams is to: advise them to not share personal details such as their tax file number, date of birth, credit card or bank details, unless they know they can trust the person they are dealing with. ensure they are aware of the status of their tax affairs. They can check this with you, by personally logging in to their own myGov account, or contacting us directly on 1800 467 033.
