Found a photo of the billboard advertising Real Gorgeous - what an exciting evening launch it was for my ‘breakthrough’ book in 1994, in the shadow of the billboard at a heaving bar on Johnston St. Complete many pals in a celebratory mood and THE most unflattering shot possible of me and my publishing partner for many years, dear @julie_gibbs. She had faith in me and pushed for the hot pink billboard on the Melbourne skyline declaring ‘You are not your buttocks’, a quote from the book, which was about body image, and beauty industry lies. Repost, original caption from @howtoreadadress: A new discovery for me today: the ‘little jacket’ of German seamstress Agnes Richter, who was a patient at the Heidelberg Psychiatric Clinic in the mid 1890s. The standard issue garment is embroidered with disjointed phrases, showing both her skill as a seamstress and her state of mind. She was also a war correspondent, and the Australian War Memorial has a pic of her on the tarmac in Vietnam, portable typewriter in hand. Synchronicity. 03.01.2022 A dress that’s also a hand-painted lamp? An outfit created from paper made from indigenous grasses? Plus 28 other wearable sculptures all made from paper? Made by 30 different artists worldwide, who all put their creations in the post to regional Tasmania during a pandemic? Reconstruct them all while socially distanced and make a film of them, you say? Premiere the film to a live audience? Done. These are the extraordinary feats by the wearable paper art competition Paper on... Skin 2020 team in Burnie and all the artists, models and film makers and sponsors involved, including the Design Eye Creative graphic design company.
