17.01.2022 SURFING STANCE, is your surfing stance holding you back? Here are some tips to help you answer the question. First thing first are you right or left foot forward? Goofy = right foot forwards Regular = left foot forwards... Second is your foot position allowing centred weight distribution over your surfboard? Your feet though be in the middle of the stringer and shoulder width (or slightly more) apart. Third is your body position allowing centred weight distribution over your surfboard, and therefore allowing you to generate power, speed and flow on the wave? You should be bending through your knees (NOT your hips), allowing your back knee to sink slightly forward (instep) and rotating through your upper body to ensure you’re facing (and looking) the direction you want to go. Don’t forget we have an accelerator and brake on our surfboard. Ensure you have majority of your weight over your front foot (accelerator), allowing you to glide quickly across the wave and increase your stability. We are planning to commence a Surf Fit after school program for our local shredders at Inverloch inlet. We’re planning for Wednesdays 4:30pm, starting this Wednesday 14th October! 09.01.2022 Paddling out the back with maximal efficiency - today we’re talking the duck dive and the eskimo/turtle role. Here are some quick tips to help you save your energy for catching waves once out the back. The Duck Dive Ensure your board is small enough to sink if it is not, the turtle roll is for you. ... Timing is key, paddle at the wave with as much speed as you can, ensure the nose of your board is under the whitewater before it hits you (start the duck dive at ~your surfboards length away) and don’t rush to the surface. Ensure you get enough weight over your heel to drive your board parallel with the ocean floor and up and out the back of the wave, try not to let your board slip out of your hands and pop out of the wave behind you. Practice, practice, practice, practice - you’ll thank yourself! The Eskimo Roll Best used on longer, higher volume surfboards. Ensure the nose of your surfboard is under to water/wave as it hits you. 09.01.2022 Catching unbroken waves part 2 - Paddling & Positioning (on the board). PADDLING - long, deep and strong strokes, none of this shallow, half-hearted, half-length stroke business. COMMITMENT is key. It’s only water, sand, and a cost free roller coaster ride in the ocean if you make a mistake (most of the time anyway). POSITIONING - you’ve probably heard us say before, toes on the tail and arch your back. The stringer should be running down your spine and your core/trunk mu...scles activated. If this is you, you’ll look like the surfer in photo 1 (catching and ripping up the wave).
