22.01.2022 Half pigeon has never been so enjoyable! Let’s face it, deep hip opening poses are not the most ‘fun’ of poses as the hips often hold a lot of resistance both physically and emotionally.. Something that is easier to steer clear of rather than embracing, especially as new mums! 20.01.2022 Anyone else guilty of just doing things because you know you’ll do it ‘right’?! Or taking over because someone isn’t doing it ‘right’?! There’s that old saying, ‘if you want something done right, do it yourself’ but really, all that means to me now is BURN OUT! I am this person, guilty as charged. But I’m starting to find those moments to step back and let others help. And it’s amazing how empowering that has been! Wow, what a concept hey?! #lightbulbmoment We are so... conditioned to just do everything and not ask for help, but why is this? Are we all of a sudden less of a human because we ask for help? No way! And who does that benefit anyway? Not ourselves that’s for sure! And people really are happy to help, so why do we not take them up on that more often? For me it is about letting go of my ego and my need to control the situation... #canyourelate Delegating tasks/chores so it’s not all on your plate is so important! For your own health and well-being and also for the people around you who truly want you to be happy and healthy. Pretty simple really but it’s a hard habit to break. So I’m setting a challenge to all of you other control freaks out there.. Every week, ask someone for help with at least one thing that you normally would just do yourself because that’s ‘easier’. Hopefully you’ll find this liberating and you may also have time to flick through a trashy mag or finish a chapter of a book or paint your nails or have a bath or whatever it is that is just for YOU. #fillupyourcup Surrendering and letting go has so many benefits! I can find a bucket load of excuses to justify not doing anything and some days that has to be ok. #balance ... But I also know that avoiding exercise for too many days in a row only makes me feel worse... 19.01.2022 Balance It’s never been more important for me to have balance in my life than it is now. I used to be go go go, say yes to everything, plan things months in advance etc... Spending time by myself and staying still was not something I did, ever. I thrived off being busy, jumping from one thing to the next, and I genuinely loved it! #noregrets Now days I have a very different approach to life.. it took me a while to be able to make this change as this ‘busy mode’ was so i...ngrained in me and who I was. But I had to acknowledge that my energy levels, both physically and mentally, had shifted and that busy-ness I once enjoyed was making me feel like I was being pulled in different directions, always left conflicted between old habits dying hard and new ones trying to form through lots of resistance. With my babies consuming so much of my attention, time and energy, I had to learn how to be ok with slowing down so that I wasn’t left feeling exhausted at the end of each day, but also felt content with what I had achieved. That transition into #mumlife can be very isolating so getting out and about and connecting with others is still so important but honouring you’re own needs to have some down time to fill up your cup is a necessity! Saying ‘no thanks’ to invitations is ok A work in progress for me as always but I have developed a good sense of awareness around the balance in my life and I know when the scales are tipping too much in one direction. Today I feel like I’ve got it just right. 18.01.2022 Another postnatal course concluded yesterday and I’m feeling really nostalgic as this time around I had to say goodbye to these 3 lovely women who have done the past 3 terms with us. They started when their beautiful baby boys were so new to the world and now they are all on the move and ready for some big adventures! Teaching in this space is rewarding on so many levels but the one thing that underpins it all is the connections I get to make. ... 16.01.2022 The look of love It’s easy to feel overwhelmed about how much these little beings you created need you.. but it’s just hitting me how much I need them too! This #mumlife gig ain’t no walk in the park, its seriously the hardest job I’ve ever had... however, I am the happiest I’ve ever been and I owe it to my 2 little humans (oh and my hubby should prob get a small piece of the pie ) ... Yes I get frustrated, I feel tired most of the time and sometimes I want to just lie on the floor and throw a tantrum to rival my 3yr olds... But I am so fulfilled by being ‘mum’ and also making the call to step away from the corporate world and focus on teaching yoga. 12.01.2022 Throw back to Saturday when I was feeling footloose and fancy free (aperol spritz in hand )! The past 4 days I’ve been nursing a sick bubba, fighting a cold myself, keeping a 3yr old happy/entertained/fed/alive and trying to get all the Christmas shopping done as well as fitting in some yoga teaching and a CPR refresher course! 10.01.2022 Meditation in motion There’s days when life can feel stressful, no doubt about it. And that negative energy can really bring us crashing down. But one thing I have learnt throughout my yoga journey is that stress isn’t in the situation, it’s in our relationship with the situation. So when I feel stress start to creep in to my day I remind myself of this and consciously work on changing my perspective, and ultimately my relationship with the situation (crying baby, toddl...er tantrums, sitting in traffic, the person at work giving their unwanted opinion, deadlines, over-commitment etc etc), whatever that may be. We can’t avoid stress, but meditation and mind/body exercises help us to build a physiological and psychological resilience. So roll out your mat or find a quiet place to sit and breathe. 08.01.2022 Strength in Pregnancy Unfortunately (or fortunately ), labour and child birth is filled with many unknowns... When will my waters break? Will my waters break spontaneously? What day will I go into labour? How many hours will I labour for? Will I be induced? Will I labour without pain relief? What does transition feel like? Will I make sounds? Will I need intivention? Will it be complication free? Will I ask for an epidural? Will I have a vaginal birth? Will I have a cesare...an birth? What will my baby look like? How much will my baby weigh? And the list goes on... . So much is out of our control, and we have to make peace with that before the big day. The more attached you get to the outcome, the more difficult it will be to accept if it doesn’t happen the way you planned. Being flexible and surrendering to the journey is an important part of birth preparation. The only thing that really matters is that at the end of it all there’s a healthy mum and bub. . Yes, know what you want and have a birth plan, ask ALL the questions so you feel confident, empowered and ready to experience something so magical it’s hard to find the words to describe it. . But whilst there are a lot of unknowns, you can indeed prepare your body for this journey! Building strength mindfully and safely during pregnancy will mean that you can rely on your body to carry you through with power and determination! The work done in pregnancy will also carry over to your postpartum experience, helping you to recover more quickly and assisting the transition into motherhood. . Yoga is a great practice in so many ways, all of which I embrace and encourage, especially as a tool for maintaining and building strength in pregnancy. But one of the most empowering discoveries I have made during my pregnancy and motherhood journey is learning to find beauty in the imperfections. Not everything is going to turn out the way you may have hoped, things that you didn’t want to change will change, thoughts you’ve never had before will enter your mind, your body may look or feel or work differently...... 05.01.2022 Firstly, I’d like to say Merry Christmas to you and I hope you managed to have a happy NYE. I’ve been holding back on posting as I’ve felt pretty somber given the state that our country is in with all the fires burning and the toxic air quality here in Canberra meaning we can not enjoy being outside like we would normally at this time of year. My heart breaks for all those affected and I know there’s more devastation to come. Lives, homes, wildlife and our beautiful lan...dscapes have been taken. At times of the day I find myself distracted from it all, and then I read an article or watch the news and my heart sinks all over again. This is the world we live in and the world my beautiful boys will grow up in. My only message today is to hold those dear to you very close. 03.01.2022 The Body-Mind Connection Preparing for labour and child birth can be daunting and overwhelming, am I right...? #relatable Many women prepare for this event by getting the body physically ready, but mental preparation plays such an important role too! ... Our mind is a powerful tool and we want it to work with us, not against us.. By understanding that we are not meant to be consciously in control of the birth process any more than we are meant to be consciously in control of the beating of our own hearts or the development of our baby in utero, we can start to prepare our minds for birth. Our subconscious mind is in control so the preparation is in learning how to switch off the conscious part of our brain, which is awfully hard for most of us who are so accustomed to using it all day every day! It’s what we know, it’s what allows us to think and make decisions but it’s also what can make us feel fear, anxiety and experience negative thoughts, and these feelings/thoughts can have a negative effect on labour. A mindfulness practice during pregnancy is a very important part of birth preparation and will also help ease any feelings of anxiety, stress and/or the inability to sleep. As much as we encourage active yoga for physical preparation, a mindfulness practice concludes every session of our classes so that the benefits of this can be felt by each and every woman in whatever way they need. I feel so excited for what lays ahead for these ladies that I’ve had the privilege of getting to know. I feel so grateful that these women have allowed and trusted me to support them on their journey. 03.01.2022 ‘Success is like your own shadow. If you try to catch it you will never succeed. Ignore it and it will follow you.’ Becoming a mum can be super confronting.. What will this mean for your work life/career/success path? It’s a big one, there’s uncertainty and you may need to re-address what ‘success’ means to you... For me it’s important to have goals and be working on/towards something that I am proud of and challenging myself to use the skills I acquired in my pre #muml...ife years... But I have learnt that chasing ‘success’ doesn’t make me happy. Especially as the goal posts seem to always be moving! What makes me happy is stopping and feeling the water on my feet and the sand beneath my toes. Hearing my kids giggle and enjoying a cuddle so tight I can feel their heartbeat. Watching my husband be the most amazing dad to our boys. Success for me isn’t a future goal, it’s being able to enjoy the simple but most beautiful moments that can easily be missed when you’re too busy looking forwards. #presence The more I ignore the idea of success, the happier I seem to feel.. . It’s taken a long time for me to learn this and it’s something I have to constantly remind myself of, it will be a continuous practice as I can easily get caught up in the overwhelm of life. But that’s just it right, nothing is permanent, life is to be lived and enjoyed every day, for all the moments big and small. #liveeveryday I choose to ignore success and see where that takes me.
