20.01.2022 Tabannan | A Dressage superstar in the making. This flashy gelding by Saxon and out of Group Two runner Royale Harvest, Tabannan wasn’t destined for the same success as his dam and sire. He retired in 2016 with two trials and one start while in the Durrant Racing stables. Tabannan, or Mac to his friends, was purchased after retiring by Corrie Scally for pleasure riding. But feeling he had potential beyond being a pleasure horse he was sold to Stacey Smith for her daughter, ...Shania in late 2018. Their instructor had suggested they buy him, even though they weren’t looking at the time. Thank goodness we listened to her, as he has honestly been one of the best investments we have made! Says Stacey. Mac is a personable horse, loving attention and being cuddled, but never being rude or pushy. In fact he gets offended and upset if he thinks he’s done something wrong. The Smiths wanted to acknowledge how lucky they are to have him, and so have given him the show name Tamblyn Park Jackpot. Mac and Shania began competing in Show Horse and Dressage Classes in late 2019, where he has gone from strength to strength even with the limited outings. Mac is turning into a superstar dressage horse. Together they qualified to for the Equestrian Western Australia Rising Stars State Dressage Squad, won the Horseland Award at the Dressage State Championships for highest percentage placed junior rider, and Preliminary Dressage Champion and Best Performed Off The Track Horse at the Orange Grove Adult Riders Inc Dressage Gala weekend. At the Interschool State Championships they won the Preliminary dressage with a score of 74% in a class of 15. Mac’s performance in the show ring is not to be dismissed either; winning Show Horse Council of WA Runner Up Newcomer Show Hunter of the Year, second Runner Up and Off the Track Winner Open Show Hunter of the Year and carrying Shania to win and qualify for Grand Nationals in both her Rider and Childs Show Hunter classes. Shania plans on focusing on Dressage with Mac, training as far up the scale as they can go together. In 2021 Shania and Mac will be competing at Elementary level Dressage while still dabbling Show Horse competitions. He is extremely trainable and an absolute joy to do anything with. He is the perfect first off the track Horse for Shania. Stacey says. What a super team this pair makes! We’re certain they’ll be out achieving their goals in 2021. Tabannan has his OTTWA Passport, but the Passport initiative isn’t just for Dressage superstars, Paddock Puff superstars are welcome too! 16.01.2022 Our Maxy Boy | Good things come in small packages Our Maxy Boy, now simply known as Max, is an 11-year-old black/brown gelding by Cape North out of A'Elle. Upon entering Morton Racing's yard as a youngster, the diminutive gelding became an instant stable favourite for his gorgeous looks and the sweetest personality to match. He broke through for a maiden win in Kalgoorlie for Morton Racing before being transferred to local Kalgoorlie trainer Peter Fernie, under whom Max would... go on to win two more races. He retired in May 2015, with a record of 3 wins from 35 starts and over $50,000 in prize money. He found his way to Denmark where he was spotted on a cold winter's day by Ben Werndly. He was in very light condition (and had) a coat like a yak, however I could see past all that and knew there was a lovely little thoroughbred underneath, recalls Ben. My intention when I stumbled across Max was to get back into riding and potentially have a bit of fun showing him as he is a lovely type. Max has now been with Ben for the past-three-and-half years, in which time he and Ben have enjoyed schooling both in and out of the arena, and particularly enjoy heading out for trail rides. Up until now, I have not managed to get him out to a show as I have just not had the time with my job, and I want to do it properly. That is about to change and I have entered Max in his breed classes at the Dilute Association Breed Show this coming weekend. I have no expectations and I am just looking forward to getting him out and seeing how he handles the atmosphere, says Ben. We wish Ben and Max every success as they venture out into the show ring. Max has his Off The Track WA passport, does your horse? Head to the Off the Track WA website to find out more www.offthetrackwa.com.au OTTWA encourages the use of safety equipment including helmets.

By popular stallion Art Major (USA) this handsome bay gelding had a successful career under trainer Stephen Reed, earning $217,440 from 49 starts with 14 wins, 10 seconds and three thirds. Kiwi Legend (NZ) ran his last race in March this year. Jacinta Fernihough purchased the gelding in April, shortly after he retired. 06.01.2022 Chariot Of Gold | This horse is worth his weight in gold! This Chris Pollard trained Mossman gelding with 56 starts for six wins, seven seconds and six thirds and a total of $158,520 in prizemoney. Over his racing career Chariot of Gold travelled the top end of Western Australia and Queensland. Retiring after his last race in September 2018 Chariot Of Gold, or Saxon, was purchased the next day by Bec Nadge. Seven months later Bec took Saxon to the Ord Valley Muster in Kununu...rra. She was prepared to have to scratch, cautious that the atmosphere may have proven too much but Saxon handled his first outing like a professional. Bec is a volunteer for the Kununurra Race Club Committee and in 2019 learnt that there a Clerk horse was required for two meetings. Saxon and Bec answered the call. Saxon again handled what was asked of him like a professional. He didn’t blink when he returned to the track and loved being patted by the kids over the fence in between races. Throughout 2019 Saxon and Bec travelled between Kununurra, Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing Barrel Racing where he’s never put a foot wrong. Bec also takes Saxon to Campdrafting clinics as well as practices her bull riding on him by cantering him with her rope around his withers. Bec’s favourite memory with Saxon so far is riding in the bareback barrels in Kununurra’s second 2019 Rodeo. We weren’t the fastest but I love the feeling of being able to ride at speed without a saddle in front of a crowd. We have a great partnership and it’s a good test of training to compete without a saddle. With any luck our rodeos will be back next year and we can try and give the stock and quarter horses a run for their money! She says. At home Saxon and Bec like to practice their dressage and show jumping as well as go trail riding through the national parks. Bec and Saxon are lucky enough to have some great landscapes to explore. They have been trail riding through the Marima National Park, which is home to some amazing rock formations. It’s so peaceful to hear nothing but his hoof beats. Bec says. Saxon also takes on the role of tutor; teaching both Bec’s partner, Chris to ride and Ruby, her friend’s nine-year-old grand-daughter. Ruby who now wants to be a Strapper when she grows up. Mosquito Buzzin retired after 184 starts for 14 wins, 18 seconds and nine thirds, earning $143,423 in prizemoney. Mosquito Buzzin, raced under six different trainers during his career including Steve Burton, Victor Bryers, and Craig Abercromby. Mosquito Buzzin, or Galahad, began his post-racing career with Bayley Thomas who provided him with a solid foundation of retraining. In 2018 Mozzie was reho...med by Bayley to Tamara Cook. We knew he would need a special home and we are so happy he has found that with Tamara. Says Bayley. Mozzie now lives on Tamara’s farm in the Wheatbelt where they make use of the space with long rides out, enjoying each other’s company. Tamara says if Galahad is given patience, compassion, and time he will return your efforts ten-fold. He is the sweetest, kindest horse who will try his heart out once he knows what is being asked. Tamara says. After a lengthy racing career Galahad initially found the change of pace a little confusing. Being asked to steady, gently and turn right was a learning curve for him. Tamara’s favourite thing to do with Galahad is enjoy his lovely rocking horse canter along the trails on a hot summer’s night. My goals for the future is simply to enjoy him. Says Tamara. What a great life Galahad has with Tamara! Mosquito Buzzin has his OTTWA Passport. Did you know that you can submit a horse ID Request through the Passport system if you’re not sure of your thoroughbred or standardbred’s racing identity. 05.01.2022 Rebel King | Vale The King Rebel King, by Universal Ruler, was bred by his future Trainer Darren McAuliffe who also retained a part share when the 2011 gelding was sold for $40,000 at the 2013 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale. It wasn’t long before Rebel King had earnt back his purchase price plus more, amassing $180,600 in stakes money as a two-year-old from just six starts. When Rebel King retired in early 2020 he had earnt a total of $912,775 from 57 starts including 12 ...wins, six seconds and 11 thirds. Amongst these wins are the listed races; Scenic Blast Stakes and Idyllic Prince Stakes in 2018, and the 2019 Cyril Flower Stakes. Soon after he retired Rebel King was offered to Melissa Jones. Melissa had worked for Darren, and wife Emma’s stables, Impressive Racing in 2016 and had recently returned after moving away. Initially Melissa was hesitant after experiencing issues with her previous mounts. She soon knew her decision to take the gelding on was the right one. He brought my spark for riding back to me. Melissa says. One of her favourite memories with him is the first ride they had together. he took care of me like the legend he was I knew I had made the right decision in taking him home. Melissa says. Rebel King, or Nick as he was affectionately known, took to his second career like a duck to water. Nick earnt the nickname Old Man for his laid-back nature, and ability to approach new things like a seasoned professional. Melissa says he loved Show Jumping and Cross Country but could also perform a respectable Dressage test. I love him to the moon and back and I can’t believe I was so blessed to be able to ride the legendary Rebel King. Melissa says. Melissa took Nick to his very first show the Pinto Society Unofficial Dressage Competition in late November 2020. They completed a Prep and Prelim Dressage test, earning a third and fifth place. Nick made Melissa very happy that day. I ended my second test with tears of joy streaming down my face as I hugged him so tight. Melissa recalls. Melissa and Nick enjoyed beach trips together. Melissa remembers the first time she took him where he behaved like a champion, loving every moment of it, and playing in the water. Melissa had hoped to make Nick’s Eventing debut in 2021 but he sadly passed on 29 December 2020, succumbing to Colic. He is dearly missed by Melissa and those that knew him. All I know is Nick was a fighter, a great racehorse an even better best friend. I miss him every day and it hurts not going out to the paddock to not see my beautiful boy. Melissa says. Rebel King was a King by name, and a King by nature who had an impact both during his racing career and as an off the track thoroughbred.

03.01.2022 It’s National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest annual celebration of Volunteers. Off the Track WA would like to say thank you to all the volunteers who dedicate their time for the love of horses. The equestrian community depends on the donated hours of passionate people. They can be found in show committees, riding clubs and charitable organisations like Claremont Therapeutic Riding Centre and HorsePower Australia. We simply wouldn’t have our sport or be able enjoy horses like we do without them. A special mention goes to the wider volunteer community who step up and assist in times of natural disasters, like the recent Wooroloo and Perth Hills bushfire. The potentially devastating effect on the equestrian community is lessened by their compassion and expertise.
