23.01.2022 1960Same place, different era - 50 years difference... About 15 minutes from both our Kobudo and Karate Dojos in Okinawa. Really hope we can visit again soon.....
21.01.2022 I've been asked by several students about when we'll be closing for the year. NOTE: the dojo is never shut! The only days we'll be "closing" will be on Christmas Day and New Years Eve. Don't be that dojo or overweight sensei who only cares about taking your money and shuts every school holidays. Keep up the training everyone!

12.01.2022 1 year has passed since Shuri Castle in Okinawa was burnt down. Over the weekend, a four-day festival was held which included this animated light show.

04.01.2022 ** Credit to 'Shuri Dojo' on instagram for the post. If only more western karate practitioners could understand the following, there would be a lot lot lottttt less cringeworthy moments in my/ our lives . Enjoy! ** You see and hear a lot of different titles in Japanese martial arts. Unfortunately, a lot of people have little or no idea how these titles and honorifics are actually used. Now, if you are following Karate and using Japanese language in your dojo or school, the...n you should know how to use these titles. Being introduced as sensei is fine.. However, introducing and calling YOURSELF sensei is WRONG. Either you are ignorant of Japanese usage or extremely arrogant, as if you are trying to give yourself a title when you don’t have one. Sensei is a respectful title.. an honorific, like Mr. or Mrs. Sensei is a honorific used to address people.. Hanshi, as an example, is a title used to describe a position, like plumber or teacher in English. Hanshi, Kyoshi, Renshi etc., are titles used to describe a position or used for certification. Sensei is NOT a teaching title. Sensei is an honorific, like Mr. or Mrs., but since its Japanese and we are following Japanese arts, and using Japanese language in the dojo, it has to go AFTER the person’s name. Therefore calling or signing YOURSELF Sensei Risa Mendelson (an example) is WRONG. If someone is claiming rank, or claiming to teach Japanese Karate, and using Japanese language in their dojo or school, and they aren’t getting simple things like proper use of honorifics and titles right, this is a big warning sign. It doesn’t take much to learn how these things should be used. If someone is using them incorrectly, it suggests to me that they really have not done the necessary research, or have the desired knowledge to actually be a sensei. In Japan, where the titles originate, it’s found amusing to them when westerners call themselves sensei. Finally, calling yourself sensei doesn’t impress anyone.. In fact, you just look stupid.
04.01.2022 A nice Sunday morning training in the Brisbane heat.... Everyone was sweating more than a ........ (I'll let you complete the sentence)

01.01.2022 (** 9 minute edited version showing OGKK members**) We were honoured to have been asked to participate in the official Karate Day 2020 event held in Okinawa. Due to the severe thunderstorms in Brisbane - Australia, our internet connection was an absolute nightmare, and we lost power several times just minutes prior to "getting on stage". Don't know how, but in the end it all worked out. A huge thank you to everyone that participated, especially those who attended the extra online rehearsals. Lets do it all again next year - in Okinawa. Enjoy the video! (Please checkout Youtube for the complete version)
