25.01.2022 This Wednesday is Early Childhood Educators’ Day. In celebrating this day our Educators will be having their own Subway luncheon in recognition for all they do with your children and as an expression of our thanks. Keep an eye on social media that afternoon for photos of our Educators in action celebrating with the children. Early Childhood Educators’ Day recognises and celebrates the work of Australia’s educators in early learning services for their wonderful contribution to... the wellbeing and healthy development of the young children in their care. 22.01.2022 We have started our Science Week by exploring edible paint. Edible paint is designed to enable young children to explore creativity using all of their senses. Sometimes the visual appeal of finger painting becomes so strong that the child decides to check if the art tastes as beautiful as it looks! Edible paint is also ideal for infants and toddlers who still have a very strong desire to explore the world with the lips and tongue. We have used Greek yoghurt and food colouring to create yellow and blue paint, which the children mixed together to create green colour. Some children used their fingers, a paint brush or a spoon to create amazing art work that they enjoyed eating in the end!

22.01.2022 Our toddlers enjoying singing 'Open, Shut them'.

21.01.2022 We had a visit from Fresh Dental to speak with the Preschoolers about dental health as part of the Dental Week. We have learned how to look after our teeth by brushing them twice a day, the type of food to eat to have healthy teeth and the 'sometimes' foods that are not so good for our teeth. We also discussed how a dentist examines our teeth and some of the equipment they use as well as what we would wear when we go to the dentist.

20.01.2022 We had wonderful time of fun and games while we stayed snug and warm in our pyjamas all day! Today was our fun 'dress in your pyjamas day' and even our educators got into the swing of it too!

19.01.2022 Who doesn't love a cupcake Today we wanted to say 'thank you' to all our educators and staff who have been working tirelessly over the past few months. Thanks to Sugar Plum Cakes and Desserts for these delicious treats, everyone loved them. Hardest decision was which flavour to choose?

17.01.2022 Connector blocks are a great way to learn mathematical concepts such as numeracy, counting each block stacked up, height as we measure our 'tower' to see if it is as tall as we are, and balance when we built too high making our tower unbalanced and watch it crashing down. This is a very engaging activity as children persist and take turns to re-build the tower over and over again.

16.01.2022 It's winter wonderland in North Boambee! Yesterday, one of our families made snow and brought it in to share with our children in the afternoon. Playing with fake snow is an engaging and fun sensory experience. Sensory play has many benefits for children, it is soothing, helps children calm down, increases motivation and communication. It may also decrease frustration as well as inappropriate and reactive behaviour. Here is the recipe If you want to try this at home: Mix together 1 pound of baking soda and slowly add shaving cream until you reach the perfect snowy consistency. Let your children knead the fake snow with their hands until it's all combined. And then....let it snow!

16.01.2022 One of the activities the children engaged in this week was ball painting. A piece of paper with small blobs of paint is placed on a tray with two balls placed on top and the tray is rocked from side to side. While the balls roll, they spread the paint mixing the colours, forming new colours and making a pattern all over the page. Children did well and, with guidance, were able to roll the ball over the page. Ball painting is a fun activity where the children use the balls rather than using brushes to make an abstract work of art. This activity encourages the children to use both their fine and gross motor skills and it also introduces them to colour mixing as well as concepts such as size and sequence.

16.01.2022 When children incorporate what they are being taught in their play activities learning is evident.

16.01.2022 Have you heard about the NEW Coffs Harbour local newspaper? 'Coffs Coast News of the Area' will have its first edition fresh off the print and available on Friday, 31st July. facebook.com/coffsNOTA Ohana is proud to be supporting with a permanent advertising commitment for this much needed community resource!

16.01.2022 After reading a story called ‘Maisy the Doctor’, the children played with the doctor kits and pretended to be doctors or patients. When children role play, they recall and re-create their own experiences, try to make sense out of the world around them or dramatise what they have seen or heard. Role/drama play is very important to your child’s development. In playing a doctor or other roles, children learn to cooperate with others and to share their ideas.

16.01.2022 Children enjoyed sensory exploration by making potions! Children learned math and science concepts of measuring, pouring and mixing different ingredients into liquid. Children also used their communication and social skills to help each other with problem solving during their experiments.

11.01.2022 To finish up Science Week, the Preschool children enjoyed the world of sensory play. Children worked alongside educators to make slime, investigating the correct ratios by weighing the cornflour (dry ingredient), measuring out liquid (water) and mixing these together to achieve the right consistency of the slime. Sensory play, like slime-making, promotes focus, calmness, fine motor skills and cognitive development while feeling and experiencing the slime oozing between one's fingers also enables children to deal with their feelings and embrace new experiences.

10.01.2022 Today the toddlers did some messy play! They were ‘Fly Swat Painting’, which is a super fun, unique painting experience. Children really enjoyed this type of ‘active’ learning. Each child held the swatter, put into the paint and slapped it onto a piece of paper. This activity enabled children to practice their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and mixing colours.

10.01.2022 You may want to try to use this tooth brushing song to help your children brush their teeth in the morning and night. https://youtu.be/wCio_xVlgQ0

09.01.2022 The older children in the Coral Corner enjoyed identifying the images on our picture cards, some of them were able to recognise and name the image on the card while others needed prompting. Children are developing their cognitive and problem solving skills linking words to images.

09.01.2022 Dancing, moving our bodies freely and dynamically through space. Dancing develops coordination, balance, gross motor and fundamental movement skills in a fun enjoyable way. Dance and music also stimulate feelings of wellbeing and happiness. Here are couple of videos of our toddlers enjoying singing and dancing.

09.01.2022 Our toddlers enjoying investigating the magical properties of sand and using their imagination while playing. Sand play promotes physical development as children dig, pour, sift, scoop, and clean up spills with brush and dustpan. Eye-hand coordination and small muscle control also improve as children learn to manipulate sand accessories. Sharing toys and ideas throughout sand play also fosters social skills as children engage in communicating, problem-solving and negotiating with each other.

09.01.2022 Celebrating NAIDOC Week with our staff and community means we are able to learn about history, become aware of the different cultures around us and respond to diversity with respect.

09.01.2022 In deciding to bring all our bookings and enrolments processes back in-house, we would like to welcome Anne Cochrane to the Enrolment Specialist role. Based out of our Korora Administration office, Anne will be the new liaison person for all our centres in providing enrolment and onboarding of all new families. Anne is a Mum and has a child at our South Grafton centre, so this new role is very close to her heart. Please feel free to reach out to Anne on either 1300 956 200 or 0423 362 202 or via email [email protected].

07.01.2022 As part of an ongoing business review, we identified a need for more robust support at each of our centres. As a result, we have restructured some of our individual centre manager functions and the role they play in their centre. Alice Jessup has been appointed as the Group Centre Administrator. She will be working out of each of our Coffs centres in supporting the managers in their administrative functions. This will typically see Alice at each of the centres one day per wee...k. Then with our North Boambee manager due to take maternity leave later in 2020, Alice will be based at North Boambee to support the staff over the rest of the week In looking at what we were seeking to achieve with the restructure, we recognised that our managers have strong skills in childcare, after all, this is their underlying qualification and passion. What you will now experience is the centre manager working more in an educational role supporting and mentoring our educators to achieve greater consistency of care.

05.01.2022 This week we celebrated Book Week. Books are important in a child’s journey of learning, because not only do they stimulate the imagination, but also expand vocabulary, speech patterns, enunciation and improve concentration. Story time provides an opportunity to improve communication skills and foster a lifetime love of books!

04.01.2022 NAIDOC Week is a time for us to celebrate Aboriginal culture and heritage. This week we had lots of fun experiencing some of the culture through Acknowledgement of Country, animal dance moves and didgeridoo brought to us by our own staff and local community members . We made Johnny Cakes on the campfire, decorated boomerangs, weaved wool onto pinecones to hang in trees and had our faces painted.

03.01.2022 Beware Artists at Work! Our babies enjoyed the feel and texture of paint while having fun developing their hand-eye coordination. They used their fingers and a sphere to manipulate the paint. They had to synchronise their hand and eye (vision) to roll the sphere around the paper resulting in some amazing colourful works of art.

03.01.2022 Children having fun with cars, trucks and a cardboard ramp while investigating cause and effect of how cars and trucks move down a ramp. An educator set up a cardboard ramp and demonstrated how round objects, if you let them go, can roll down from the top. The educator turned cars and trucks upside down to show children how the round wheels spin and demonstrated how this allows them to travel down a ramp. Needless to say, in no time at all, the ramp was very busy with heavy traffic.

03.01.2022 The children enjoyed using their gross motor skills to climb up the slide, rock on the balance boards and ride the bikes. We learnt that the slide is slippery, so when we go down.....we go down fast! We had great fun and it was smiles all around!

02.01.2022 Did you know that it takes about 2 to 3 minutes to brush your teeth properly but most people only take 30 seconds or less? Promoting the importance of these key messages from an early age will help reduce the risk of poor dental health in the long term. In a few weeks time, the Tooth Fairy from Fresh Dental will visit on Thursday 20th August at 10:30am to show us how to take care of our teeth and gums. This is part of the National Dental Health Week, which starts on the first... Monday of August. It is an initiative of the Australian Dental Association and links closely to three Munch & Move key messages: * Eat more fruit and vegetables * Choose healthier snacks * Choose water as a drink See more
