25.01.2022 Mining for Iron at Mount Whaleback Australia is a top iron ore producer and exporter in the world, holding nearly 30 percent of the estimated global supply. The... majority of those reserves are found in Western Australia, home to one of the country’s largest and oldest iron ore mines. The image above shows the Mount Whaleback Iron Ore Mine, adjacent to the mining town of Newman. The image was acquired by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite on July 16, 2020. The image was composed from green, red, and near-infrared light, a combination that helps differentiate components of the landscape; water is black and vegetation is green. The deposits at Mount Whaleback were discovered in 1957 by prospector Stan Hilditch. After World War II, Hilditch began exploring Western Australia for minerals. He concentrated their search in the hills because he believed the mountainous terrain would help the minerals precipitate. Searching in the Ophthalmia Range, he climbed up a hill and stumbled upon a massive iron ore deposit that soon became Mount Whaleback iron ore mine. Hilditch tried to open Mount Whaleback for business in 1961, after Australia lifted an embargo on exporting mineral goods. But in spite of the abundance of ore, he had trouble convincing companies to invest in his mine because the deposits were located far from the coast (for shipping) and with a very small population to work on extracting them. Eventually, Hildritch and his business partner sold their temporary reserves to an interested company for $10 million. The Mount Newman Mining Company later built the adjacent mining town, which is now home to about 8,000 people. The mine, which is still operating after more than five decades, stretches 5.5 kilometers (3 miles) long and 1.5 kilometer (1 mile) wide. The satellite image above also shows several smaller mines nearby; the smaller mines and Mount Whaleback are now collectively known as Mount Newman. Deposits from these smaller mines are transported to Mount Whaleback, blended, and then sent to port. A lot of the iron ore found at Mount Whaleback is hematite, which has been the dominant iron ore mined in Australia since the 1960s. Pure hematite contains around 70 percent iron and ranges in color from silver to reddish brown. Iron is extracted from the minerals and commonly used for making steel. The ore at Whaleback mostly occurs in banded iron formations, appearing as colorful alternating layers of mineral deposits on the landscape. The formations were first started more than 2.5 billion years ago when the landmass was under water. Ancient forms of bacteria photosynthesized and released large amounts of oxygen; that oxygen reacted with seawater to form insoluble iron oxide. The iron would precipitate out of the salt water as minerals such as hematite, which then accumulated as sediment on the sea floor. 25.01.2022 Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) can be used to apportion the respirable dust mass to three important component fractions (i.e., coal, non-carbonate minerals, and carbonate), which should generally correlate with three different dust sources (i.e., coal strata, rock strata, and limestone rock dusting products being applied in the mine). However, a primary shortcoming of that previous work was use of fibrous sampling filters, which limited dust recovery and thus analytical acc...uracy. Here, an improved TGA application is presented using smooth polycarbonate filters. Based on experiments with laboratory-generated dust samples (masses ranging between 951,319 g), the TGA-derived mass fractions (reported as percentage values) for all three components were found to generally be within 10% of expected values. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1695057

22.01.2022 The aim of this study was to make a preliminary evaluation of the University of North Carolina passive aerosol sampler (UNC sampler) for personal air sampling of particles. The UNC sampler mass concentrations were approximately 30 times higher than those measured with the respirable cyclone. In conclusion, the UNC sampler, when used for personal sampling in a mine, provides a reasonable particle size distribution and the deposited particles appeared to be of mineral origin a...nd not from textile or skin but the approximately 30-fold overestimation of mass concentrations when comparing with respirable cyclone sampling indicates that further improvements are necessary. Positioning of the sampler may be critical and moving the UNC sampler from the chest to e.g. the top of a helmet might be an improvement. Grounding of the sampler in order to avoid static electricity might also be useful. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1648814

18.01.2022 The objective of this study was to understand the concentrations of PAHs, OPFRs, and PBDEs in fire stations, to evaluate factors that affect chemical concentration, and to assess how air and dust could contribute to firefighters relevant exposure risk. These results suggest chemicals are brought back to fire stations from fire scenes and that they are accumulating in fire stations. They also suggest soiled firefighting ensembles are a source of these chemicals in fire stations and that their proximity to the rest of the station determines the extent to which they contribute to chemical concentrations in fire stations. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1699246

12.01.2022 The study objective was to evaluate diesel engine exhaust (DEE) levels in career fire stations in Ontario, Canada. The results show that firefighters may be at an increased risk of exposure to DEE when in fire halls and that LEV units should be assessed regularly for efficiency. Although no occupational exposure limit for DEE is currently available for industrial/non-industrial workplaces in Ontario, fire departments should continue to implement DEE control strategies to reduce exposures to mitigate potential health risks. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1691729

12.01.2022 McIntyre Powder (MP) is a finely ground aluminium powder that was used between 1943 and 1979 as a prophylaxis for silicosis. The McIntyre Research Foundation developed, patented, and produced the MP and distributed it to licensees in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Chile, Belgian Congo, and Western Australia. In the province of Ontario, Canada it is estimated that at least 27,500 miners between 1943 and 1979 were exposed to MP. It is possible that inhaled MP nanoparticle...s may be transported via blood and lymph fluid circulation to many different organs including the brain. It is also possible for inhaled larger MP particles to deposit onto lung tissue and for potential health effects to arise from inflammatory responses through immune activation. This MP characterization will provide crucial data to help inform future toxicological, epidemiological, and biological studies of any long-term effects related to the inhalation of aluminium dust and nanomaterials. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1657581

12.01.2022 The Ultrasonic Personal Aerosol Sampler (UPAS) is a small, lightweight, and quiet sampler that collects airborne particulate matter on a filter for gravimetric or compositional analysis. The objective of this work was to develop UPAS inlets with collection efficiencies that match criteria for respirable or thoracic mass sampling. With either inlet, the collected sample should be within 5% of what the standard specifies for aerosols with reasonably broad size distributions. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2020.1741595

11.01.2022 Thermal strain risk information from mobile apps is more readily available for timely advice on risk management that is crucial in preventing severe acute illnesses and deaths, but its reliability is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool mobile app in providing accurate risk information to prevent heat-related illnesses among agricultural workers in eastern North Carolina. Results showed that the app correctly ...identified 60100% of minimal risk conditions, depending on workload type, but its reliability decreased as the heat stress risk condition and workload became more severe. It is concluded that the performance of the OSHA-NIOSH app in assessing occupational risk to heat stress is not protective of workers particularly for heavy and very heavy workloads, and that the use of the app for the assessment of occupational heat stress risk in agricultural settings is not recommended. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2020.1721512

08.01.2022 Development of respirable virtual-cyclone samplers The final recommended design of the virtual cyclone has an inlet width of 20 mm, making the whole sampling train miniaturized and handy to use in the field. The sampling flow of the new virtual cyclone can be increased from 5.5 to 21.5 L/min, with both inlet and outlet heights increased from 0.35 to 1.25 mm, but without shifting the overall aerosol penetration curves. These newly designed samplers have matched the international ISO respirable convention quite well and show constant operation which surpass all the personal respirable cyclones. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1670834

03.01.2022 An ideal inhalable aerosol sampler for occupational exposure monitoring would have a sampling efficiency that perfectly matches the inhalable particulate matter (IPM) criterion. Two common aerosol samplers in use worldwide are the closed-face cassette (CFC) and the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) sampler. However, the CFC is known to under-sample, with near zero sampling efficiency for particles >30 m, whereas the IOM, considered by many to be the gold standard in... inhalable samplers, has been shown to over-sample particles >60 m. A new sampler in development incorporates characteristics of both the CFC and the IOM. Like the CFC, it would be disposable, have a simple design, and is intended to be oriented at a 45 downward angle. Results indicated that the new sampler improved on the CFC for smaller particles, providing a larger range for which it matches the IPM criterion, up to 44.3 m. However, the efficiency was significantly lower in comparison to the IPM criterion for particle sizes above 60 m. Overall, the new sampler showed promise, but additional modifications may help improve sampling efficiency for larger particles. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1632463

03.01.2022 The accuracy and feasibility of smartphone sound level meter applications (apps) for noise monitoring in occupational and environmental scenarios was tested. Ten iOS and Android smartphones were used to conduct sound level measurements with five apps for each respective platform. From the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that most of the apps studied are not ready to be used for compliance purposes. However, an app such as SLA Lite has the potential to be used as a screening tool in occupational scenarios due to its consistency across all sound levels and low error. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1639718

03.01.2022 High levels of exertion and physiological strain are the leading cause of fireground injuries. The Physiological Strain Index (PSI) provides a rating of strain based on body core temperature and heart rate; however, it may underestimate the strain of workers in protective clothing as skin temperature may be elevated. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the PSI and an Adaptive Physiological Strain Index (aPSI) that incorporates skin temperature, among firefigh...ters wearing protective clothing. The aPSI may provide a more accurate indication of a level of maximal strain for encapsulated workers than the original PSI, coincident with the occupational limits for body core temperature of 38.0 C for general occupational groups, or 38.5 C for selected and acclimatised personnel. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1666211

01.01.2022 The inhalation and the deposition of welding-generated ultrafine particles in welders respiratory tracts have been linked to severe pulmonary impairments. In the present study, a mobile aerosol lung deposition apparatus (MALDA) was developed and applied to study the respiratory deposition of ultrafine welding fume particles. The results showed that the fractional deposition of ultrafine welding fume particle in the human tracheobronchial airways down to the 9th airway genera...tion could be readily and systematically measured by the MALDA. The estimated cumulative respiratory deposition ranged from approximately 931% for ultrafine welding fume particles between 10 and 100 nm in diameter. The results acquired demonstrated that the MALDA developed has the potential to become a useful apparatus in the future to estimate the respiratory deposition of ultrafine particles in real workplaces. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1652306
