20.01.2022 Agricultural work is associated with increased risk of adverse musculoskeletal health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to quantify exposure to biomechanical factors among a sample of farmers while they performed a variety of routine agricultural activities. Not surprisingly, substantial variation in exposure levels were observed within each agricultural activity, which is related to substantial variation in the equipment, tools, and work practices used by participants. Ultimately, the results of this study contribute to an emerging literature in which the physical demands of routine agricultural work have been described on the basis of sensor-based measurements rather than more common self-report or observation-based approaches. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2020.1717502

20.01.2022 The objectives of this study were to estimate rotavirus, rhinovirus, and influenza A virus infection risks in an office setting and quantify infection risk reductions for two hygiene interventions. In the first intervention, research staff used an ethanol-based spray disinfectant to clean high-touch non-porous surfaces in a shared office space. The second intervention included surface disinfection and also provided workers with alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel and hand saniti...zing wipes to promote hand hygiene. This study demonstrated that surface disinfection and the use of personal hand hygiene products can help decrease virus infection risk in communal offices. Additionally, a variance-based sensitivity analysis revealed a greater relative importance of surface concentrations, assumptions of relevant exposure routes, and inputs representing human behaviour in estimating risk reductions. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1691219

12.01.2022 This article covers basic glove chemical resistance terms and Ficks first law of diffusion, the details of the major permeation standards, their comparison, their critique, their research gaps; the scientific literature on whole glove permeation, and final conclusions. The major recommendation was to harmonise all the permeation standards and perform them at realistic work conditions, especially temperature. The whole glove system would be most useful for testing the thinnest gloves. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1678754

12.01.2022 Double gloving of disposable gloves is now commonplace in healthcare settings when extra protection is needed, and it is probably more protective than single gloving against DGBE for the four types of disposable nitrile gloves tested. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2020.1759808

11.01.2022 In 2019 this study was published. During the doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE), pathogens can be transferred from the PPE to the bodies of healthcare workers (HCWs), putting HCWs and patients at risk of exposure and infection. Common errors were doffing gown from the front, removing face shield of the mask, and touching potentially contaminated surfaces and PPE during doffing. Deviations from the recommended PPE doffing protocol are common and can increase potent...ial for contamination of the HCWs clothing or skin after providing care. There is a clear need to change the approach used to training HCWs in PPE doffing practices. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1628350

03.01.2022 Recent studies have shown the 2001 American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for Hand Activity was not sufficiently protective for workers at risk of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). These studies led to a revision of the TLV and Action Limit. This study compares the effect of applying the 2018 TLV vs. the 2001 TLV to predict incident CTS within a large occupational pooled cohort study. Eliminating exposures above the 2001 TLV might have prevented 11.2% of all cases of CTS seen in our pooled cohort, vs. 25.1% of cases potentially prevented by keeping exposures below the 2018 value. The 2018 revision of the TLV better protects workers from CTS. https://oeh.tandfonline.com//10.1080/15459624.2019.1640366
