25.01.2022 T H O U G H T S Being a Mother has been the most wonderful experience, to see Mr O talk about diggers and trains with such passion brings me so much joy. It’s also been a tough experience to go through at times. Trying to explain what the tiredness feels like is hard. It’s like when you haven’t slept properly, everyone at work has annoyed you get home and night time makes everything feel worse. You have a fight with your friend over something that feels so important... but really it isn’t. You go to sleep and wake up refreshed and you know it wasn’t really that bad, apologise and make up. When you’re a Mum you don’t get that refreshed bit. . . When you’re that exhausted it’s hard to love every moment. It’s hard to think straight, to be positive, to get dressed, to exercise, to talk to your friends or even make a conversation with your partner. Add to that some epic hormonal swings as your levels get geared up to make milk and you’re in a place, sometimes, of more down feelings than up ones. . . All I can say is, beautiful Mammas, you don’t have to feel guilty. Lack of sleep wrecks absolute havok with your emotions. If you feel like everything seems too much, then it is. Having a child isn’t instagram highlights, it’s real life. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t love your child every second of everyday, your day isn’t full of sensory activities and you feel like you need a break and time away. 23.01.2022 M O T I V A T I O N Since becoming a Mum I have completely changed my exercise routine. It’s shifted from being able to smash out hour long workouts and sit and have a cuppa after to being able to fit in what I can, when I can and looking after my fatigue levels. . . I still keep the idea that the working week has structured exercise in it and the weekend has activity in it if we want. As a Mum flexibility is the key, life throws a million... curve balls and it doesn’t always work out that the way we want it too. I’ve learnt I can’t feel guilty about that, years ago missing a work out spelled disaster, these days it just means try again some other time. . . Being active as a Mum requires a total change of thinking. Your child is going to be your priority but your health (mental and physical) needs to be as well, striking that balance can feel like playing a game of chance! Looking day by day, week by week and being flexible with what’s going on is the way to keep active and stay active. Swapping a work out for a walk when you’re tired, doing a online workout instead of the gym when little ones are sick, tapping out for a day and starting again tomorrow cause it all feels like too much .... they are all ok things to do. Try this little at home cardio burst regardless of if you have equipment or not and see how you feel ;) . . Set one - 50 straight punches, 5 squats, 50 upper cuts, 5 lunges & short run. Set Two - 100 straight punches, 10 squats, 100 uppercuts, 10 lunges & a short run. Alternate between set 1 & 2 for a...pprox 4 6 sets. Then finish with a timer 20sec work, no rest for 12 rounds. 1. Hold a squat & punch fast 2. Squat & kick alternating legs 3. Overhead punches & run on the spot 4. Rest. . . You can do this any time, any where! 22.01.2022 F O O D Cause sometimes you just have to treat yoself! A friend and I shared this as a wonderful Sat arvo nibble, with a glass or two of wine of course. It was just what we needed, a little bit of kid free time to enjoy good food in the afternoon sun. This kind of food doesn’t make me feel guilty, I just enjoy what it is. I know that in the scheme of things this won’t even matter. A balanced diet includes quinoa, broccoli, salmon and it for sure includes hot chips!... . . This board and chippies were from @mandoonestate. Their cheese board is perfect to share, just enough to still have room for something substantial if you need. There chips are also one of my favs, crunchy and perfectly seasoned. 21.01.2022 M O T I V A T I O N One of the reasons we started OH! we because we knew what it was like to feel nervous about exercise. I’d recovered from over exercising and Cris came from a place where she hadn’t wanted to exercise. We had both been in situations where we hadn’t felt comfortable and we were motivated because we didn't feel supported. . . We decided to create a space where everyone felt supported. It didn’t matter what level you needed... to train at you could fit in to our groups. That if you needed a lower level it was as ordinary as breathing air and no one noticed. Where if you needed a higher level it wasn’t a big deal at all. . . That’s where we believe motivation comes from. Being in a space where you feel comfortable to do your own thing. For us that’s where our motivation and consistency came from. Cristina and I write up the same workout to do ourselves, yet we’re doing absolute opposite levels of pace, weights, depth and agility. I’m jump squatting and she’s pulsing, she’s trying chin ups and I’m ball slamming, she’s got the band on and I’m running. 19.01.2022 W O R K O U T Bands are an amazing tool, they are perfect for low, medium or high impact workouts. You can use the on your legs or your arms. They are easy to take away with you if you need, transport between houses or carry with you to the gym. . . Personally, I love using the bands on my legs for an extra burn at the end of a workout. I choose the end because I like to sit down afterwards ;) A quick and simple way to use bands is to map o...ut a section where you can do some crab walks, about 6 in one direction and 6 back. Then do 10 squats and 10 squat and lift. Repeat the crab walks and then do 15 of each. Then do the crab walks one last time and do 20 of each. . . 19.01.2022 T H O U G H T S Anyone else watching The Crown? Oh my god, how good is it?! While watching this season it brought up a few things for me in relation to Eating Disorders. One is how looking back there is an upside to having had an ED. . . I am glad that my ED forced me to look at my relationship with eating. The work I did helped me build trust in my body and in food. It brings me to a place in my life now where I know what to eat, I can tr...eat myself and most importantly that I can adjust my eating behaviours when I know I need to without feeling shame. . . I want this feeling of trust for everyone, not just those who have suffered with eating disorders. I think that understanding how our emotions drive our relationship with food is the key to finding balance. We so often know what we should be eating, how we should be eating but something just sabotages us, swinging us off track. That sabotage is our emotions. For whatever reason our relationship with food was damaged. A lot of this is done when we are young by the media, creating shame around eating. . . When we work on repairing that wound then we can have a more positive relationship with food. 18.01.2022 F O O D We do take away each week, usually on a Friday. When I say take away I mean something I classify as food that you should most definitely eat sometimes. We do fish and chips, Chinese, Vietnamese, Burgers, Chicken Treat or the crowd fav Romano’s Pizza. . . Take away is part of a normal healthy diet. Restriction isn’t the key, balance is. Here I’m having my pizza with some salad, that’s because I had been out for lunch that day too and... was going out for lunch the next day as well. I didn’t want to cook, everyone wanted pizza cause it was Friday, so I just made a little effort to strike a balance but adding in extra fibre. . . The key to feeling comfortable with food is just about being a little mindful, not a lot, obsessing over your food choices will never lead you down a good path. It shouldn’t feel like an effort, it should just be a passing thought, getting you to spend just a moment thinking about a food choice. 15.01.2022 F O O D There’s one rule we do follow when it comes to food... That fruit and veggies are unlimited! There’s absolutely no limit to how many carrots you want to chomp, how many strawberries you want to eat and how much broccoli you want to add. . . Fruit and veggies are an excellent way to get extra fibre in to your diet. Fibre is great for your digestion but it also helps to keep you fuller for longer. Which means a great way to have your... pasta, rice, potato bake and strike a balance on your plate. If you’re still hungry after you’ve finished eating, a second helping of veggies is perfect. Drizzle on a little bit of sauce from whatever meal your having for that extra bit of satisfaction. . . Fruit is an awesome way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Cristina and I will have our lunch and then go ahead and scoff a punnet of strawberries afterwards, absolutely zero guilt! Then we will have a banana with our arvo yoghurt and some blueberries for dessert after tea. . . You don’t need to obsess about it, there is no need to do thousands of crunches. It is about the quality of what you're doing, not the quantity. A little bit of core engagement at the right time will make all the difference. . . We always say just engage slightly in your moves, if... 100% is busting for a wee driving down a gravel road, then about 20% in each exercise is good. When you’re doing core specific exercises that’s where you can boost it up around 70%. 13.01.2022 F O O D Life is about these moments. Moments with the people we care about are the things we’re going to remember as we age. We will remember being surprised with a birthday cake, we remember how Mums sausage rolls smelt coming out of the oven, we remember how our friend could make the perfect antipasto platter and we remember how our grandparents made the best cannoli. . . How we look means so little to our overall life. Denying ourselves... indulgences means we are denying ourselves moments. We aren’t going to look back thinking how strong we were at saying no to all those cakes, we’re going to look back and think it wasn’t really that important. Food shouldn’t rule our lives. It shouldn’t take meticulous planning, denying or restricting. It should ebb and flow, allowing for fluctuations. . . Food is about striking that balance. Where you eat your cake, but you also enjoy your salad. Where you love some hot chips but you also crave fruit. Where you love a big scoop of ice cream but you also like Greek Yoghurt. You shouldn’t be out having to say no to the foods you love and enjoy, that’s not what life is about. It’s about balancing it all, you can have Taco’s for dinner and a Margarita, you can also follow that up with some churros. It just means during the day you accommodate this, striking a balance. . . I know we say it all the time, but ...balance is the absolute key. You can have your cake and eat it too, you just also need to eat some leafy greens, munch on an apple and drink some water. 08.01.2022 F O O D Anyone else love scones as much as me? They are such a treat! I actually had these as much lunch at The Berry Farm in Margaret river because they were SO HUGE. ate them both with that beautiful fresh conserve and the cream and hhad a mugacino to go with it. . . Indulging in what you really want to eat on occasions is really good for the soul. Instead of trying to fight our cravings we just need to fit them in. I had been thinking ab...out these scones all week down south, so I had yoghurt, cereal and fruit for breakfast, took some fruit to snack on in the car while we did the caves, then I enjoyed these and we had lamb and salad for dinner. In the scheme of that day it slides in perfectly. When I say balanced eating is the goal its this. We absolutely can have the treats we want, there’s no deprivation, there is just a little forethought. . . With practise this kind of eating can be possible for anyone. I don’t say this lightly there was once in my life where I was too afraid to sit next to someone eating hot chips because I thought the calories would jump on too me, let alone try and eat one! 08.01.2022 M O T I V A T I O N As we age it’s normal that we aren’t able to move the way we could before, but it’s even more important that we keep moving! I know I’m not old in the scheme of things but over exercising in my younger years has definitely taken a toll on my body. I can’t lift heavy anymore, I can’t do high impact every day and I can’t push myself like I once could. . . These days I do what feels right for my body. The heaviest I lift ...is probably 12kgs, many, if not most, of my clients can lift heavier that I can! But you know what, I am ok with that. I know that my body is different from anyone else’s, it needs to be trained the way I enjoy and the way that I am best able too. I know that I need flexibility with my workout routine now and forever to adjust as I age. . . My motivation is about doing what feels good, what manages my injuries, what helps my mental health and what makes me feel strong in my sessions. That’s very, very different to how I trained 10 years ago and it will be very different to how I train in 10 years’ time. 07.01.2022 T H O U G H T S We are lucky to have been shaped by my eating disorder as a family. I know that sounds weird but hear me out. From going through that experience we all know what happens when mental health goes untreated. It grows, it becomes all consuming, crippling and destructive. It turns a happy family into a stressed and resentful one. Since going through that experience we treat mental health issues like physical health issues. If something is going on, a feel...ing is hanging about for a few weeks, then we go and see a doctor and get on to it straight away. . . Mental health is just as important as physical health. In fact our mental health can have a huge impact on our physical health. When we are stressed we increase our hormones sending them out of balance, we tense our bodies making muscle aches and pains, we don’t sleep as well making us more tired. . . Treating mental health in the way we do physical health is my dream. That we can all just access good, easy care just like we can when we have a sore foot. If you are struggling know that you don’t have too, there is so much support out there for you. It seems scary to seek it and to take those first few steps but I promise it won’t always be that way. Just like finding a good GP sometimes finding the right help takes a few go’s. 06.01.2022 T H O U G H T S Growth comes from looking inside at those parts of us that scare us. It comes from acknowledging those thoughts inside that make us fearful. When we keep them buried that's where the darkness starts, the thoughts take on a story of their own and they manifest in to anxieties. . . It's so hard and so confronting to look at yourself in that way and even harder to voice it. For me as Mother it's thinking about newborn days again. I went through them, took them ...for what they were, but now they are over I am scared to go back. I'm scared of what kind of Mum I'll be when I'm tired. When I'm exhausted I become an angry, less tollerant and caring Mum. That version of myself isn't the one I want to be. With Ollie I know I can catch myself and recoup with two I feel like I won't know how. There lies my fear. . . That's hard for me to write, it makes me feel all kinds of guilty, selfish and ungrateful. But as with every thing I've processed before I know what's true for me, is true for me. When I had my eating disorder being thin was all I wanted, all that mattered, that was true for me then regardless of what was going on anywhere else and I had to process that to recover. . . We can't discount our own current feelings because of how we think we should feel, how we think others are feeling or how we assume we might feel in the future. 03.01.2022 W O R K O U T There are a few exercises that clients tell us they don’t like and lunges is deff top of that list. They are hard because they work us unevenly, they make us use all of our leg muscles and our balance. This is also exactly why they are so good for us! . . To make lunges that bit easier heres a few tips. Firstly make sure you stand with your legs hip width apart and when you step back keep that width, don’t cross your leg beh...ind you or take it our wide. Secondly don’t be afraid to use a finger or two on a wall to balance, if it helps steady you then go for it. Thirdly don’t push your hands down on your thighs, put them on your hips instead, we want to work your legs. Lastly make sure you’re on your tippy toes when you step back, we don’t want to plant that foot, we want to balance on your toes. . . Don’t be afraid to spend time getting your technique right. You don’t have to rush to keep up with anyone, this is your workout and these are your lunges. 02.01.2022 W O R K O U T Boxing is an excellent full body workout. My husband introduced me to the world of Muay Thai and I haven’t looked back since. Punching and kicking is such a stress reliever! It is a workout that you can do no matter what your fitness level or experience. It uses all the muscles in your body plus gets you huffing and puffing. You don’t need a bag or a partner to do it, using some light hand weights can get the same effect. . .... I love to do a quick set of 20 straights, 20 uppercuts adding 20 on each set until I get to 100 of each. I break each set up (so before I add on 20) with something like a few burpees, a run or some squats. 02.01.2022 T H O U G H T S Over this last year I have spent a lot of time thinking about what makes the difference to really become comfortable with yourself. I’ve always known it's the work we do in our mind but it became really clear in listening to our lockdown experiences. . . We can be so cruel to ourselves inside our minds. The negative chatter we use about food, exercise and our body shape can reduce us to tears. When we feel this way we look... for something that will work to help us. Marketing preys on this, they know that’s how to take advantage of us. We get stuck in this loop of looking for a solution, trying the solution, feeling like we are failing at the solution and then repeating the whole process. Rarely do we ever truly feel better about ourselves. . . The only way to break this cycle is work on your mind. So this year I ask you to put some time, money and energy aside to truly work on you. Find a food guide that works with emotions as well as food, find a professional that will help you find out your why, go to an exercise place that is about feeling good and find people who will support you on these endeavors. These things are what helped me escape anorexia and move into a balanced life. . . It is scary I know, but I promise you it won’t take forever. It might be hard for a while but it will get easier and it will result in you feeling confident, happy and balanced in your body and your life.
