24.01.2022 Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Workplaces. We have touched on this topic before, however it is an important one to reiterate. In your workplace you may work alongside employees which have difficulty speaking, reading and writing English. Language differences can form a barrier in communication, making the day to day operations of business more difficult. Workers from different cultural backgrounds often have different attitudes towards safety. To make the process easie...r for culturally and linguistically diverse workers, specific language needs should be evaluated. This way, all workers can understand safety and hazard management, making the process easier for everyone. All the best, and remember OHS Matters Cheers, Ven.

10.01.2022 A culturally and linguistically diverse workplace is one where some workers preferred language is not English and so their knowledge of English may be limited. There are many such workplaces in QLD. It is important for employers to be aware of their workforce so they care make sure that health and safety is discussed in ways that everyone understands. It does not matter what language you speak, as OHS Matters to all. Cheers Ven

07.01.2022 Last week was National Farmers Safety Week. (22/7/2014) National Farm Safety Week, an initiative of Farmsafe Australia, aims to improve awareness of farm safety issues in Rural communities nationwide. One of the most important aims this year is to improve the safety of older workers. Safe Work Australia's report on work related injuries between 2003 and 2011, 30% of fatalities were of workers over the age of 65. In 2013, there were 37 deaths in in the Australian agricultural... industry, with workers experiencing a fatality rate eight times higher than the average rate for Australian workers. "National Farm Safety Week is a timely reminder to highlight the importance for farmers and the communities that they live and work in to not become complacent about their own health and safety. There needs to be robust processes in place to protect farmers and those who enter the farm environment," according to Safe Work Australia. Stay safe and remember, OHS Matters. Cheers, Ven.

07.01.2022 Did you know that the use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in Australia since the end of 2003. This means that the import, manufacture, supply, sale and use or reuse of asbestos and asbestos-containing products is no longer permitted. The ban doesn’t apply to asbestos installed prior to this date (eg in residential or commercial buildings). Due to its strength, durability and resistance to fire and water, asbestos was used in a wide range of building products and mate...rials up until the mid-1980s. Products that may contain asbestos include vinyl floor tiles, cement roof sheeting and wall lining, lagging and jointing material and fire blankets. If you have any asbestos concerns, don't hesitate to call OHS Matters. Take care, Cheers, Ven.
