23.01.2022 Why is #stayhome so exhausting? Fact: Iso makes us tired. Reasons can range from a lack of routine, emotional uncertainty, poor diet and cocktail hour starting earlier and earlier. Who knew not leaving your house was exhausting?? Ummm... new parents! #stayhome feels like the newborn phase with Neko. Your social circle shrinks, your suburb becomes your world. You need to be very careful for 6 weeks until bubba has had their immunizations so you limit contact with other human...s and the kicker, you are exhausted - all the time. Chatting with one of my favourite humans Lauren Morrey yesterday she feels that part of her cognitive load has lifted. No more trying to juggle events after work + drop-offs and pickups. A massive increase in autonomy. What a huge experiment we are all going through, at the same time - keep noticing how you are feeling. I'm encouraging our team & members = Ahoyer's - to be like Sherlock: get curious rather than going into judgement mode why you don't feel like doing that 5k run. #ahoyhoy #holdthespace #iso #covid19 #staywiththetrouble credit to See more

21.01.2022 Being satisfied with things the way they are is a sure sign of decline. Constructive discontent to me a higher faculty of mind Martha Harper 1920. Insights into Martha’s business model 1. She would not open a salon unless she has the signatures of support for the salon from a certain number of women in the area 2. She always engaged operators she could trust. She hired women from a similar background as her lower class servants with ambition and discipline but lacked capi...tal 3. She maintained strict control over her brand 4. The Harpertites were put through intense training and became a family 5. A Harperite would pay a fee paid back as a loan over time and agree only to stock Harper products. The model was so scalable that by 1914 she had 134 franchises in 128 cities across US, Canada and Europe. During the depression, at a time of massive discounting, she stuck to her premium prices and kept the focus on exceptional quality and customer service. Martha died in 1950 at the age of 93 as a pioneer in the beauty business but the celebration of her legacy was short Lived. Jane Pitt has written an excellent biography if you want to know more! Martha Matilda Harper and the American Dream. Without this research we may have lost her story to time. @ Thornbury, Victoria

15.01.2022 We have been exploring the toll multiple daily zoom sessions are having on us, carrying on from our virtual fatigue warning from a few weeks ago. One of the team asked Why can’t I stop staring at myself? The point of a video call is being able to see you guys and connect but I feel like I’m constantly checking myself out! Of course we all pointed our fingers at them and yelled NARCISSIST! ... We actually just did some research. Our powers of attention have evolved to automatically pay attention to info about ourselves, because this ability helped us survive in our hunter-gather past. There’s also an element of self-presentation involved we want to make sure that we display the appropriate facial expressions, body language, and gestures. Turns out It’s very natural to be curious and stare at your reflection, but if you’re a tad self-conscious or body-conscious already, this will exacerbate your insecurity and may start to take a toll. It can be cognitively exhausting to stare at yourself all day. Take a break from staring at yourself! Turn off self video. On zoom you can do this by: 1. Start or Join your zoom 2. Right click your video to display the menu then choose Hide Myself. image credit Ella Byworth

15.01.2022 Meet the house servant who pioneered the franchising business model. Martha Matilda Harper, 60 years before McDonald, built a formidable franchise of hair salons and trained hundreds of underprivileged women to run their own businesses. She built 500 salons all over the . When she was born her dad rented her out for labour. In one household she served the master had a special interest in the physiology of hair. When he died he gave Martha a recipe for a hair tonic made of ...natural herbs . Martha took the recipe and ran small market tests with women in the rich neighbourhood she was now serving in. She went door to door and the women couldn’t get enough of the tonic and she knew she was into something. It was a time of women’s suffrage, where the free will of a women was a symptom of a disease. In 1888 at the age of 31 she invested her life savings, $390 (which is about 9.7k US 2020) she founded Harper Hairdressing Parlor. She invented the Harper Method 2 hours of head and shoulder rub, facial and movement to simulate hair growth using her own incredible hair as evidence of its success (two circuses at different times tried to recruit her!!) At the time all women did their hair care at home. How would Martha compel women to come to her salon and not hide at home? Then she caught a break; A music teacher next door to her business mentioned he had no waiting room. Martha offered her space as a place where the moment could wait. Women started getting treatments while their children took piano lessons. Part One fin... Part Two to follow! See more

08.01.2022 @oiahoyhoy have made it to the final round of @darebincouncil #pitchit. This week we are in accelerator mode and then we find out if we make it to the grand final. Thanks to @latrobeuni and @melbinnovation for supporting Pitch It 2020. It’s pretty exciting to have a chance to win a share in over $50,000 in prizes

05.01.2022 We’ve got this Melbourne. We think 6 weeks of level four is a way better option than 6 months of stage three. Talk, connect, chat - do all the self care things. This isn’t working from home. This is pandemic response. Keep in touch and keep it real xx

02.01.2022 A key area of speciality for Ahoyhoy is the future of work and leadership for organisations. I spoke at a local college here in Melbourne and met with a number of parents slightly anxious about how to advise their 15 year olds on what subjects to pick to set them up for success. The media is full of sensational headlines on how the future of work will look markedly different by 2030 which makes it pretty hard to know what to tell your kids in the here and now. I made a little video on some of the advice I gave. What advice do you have for a 15 year old about to select their year 11 subjects?
