17.01.2022 Douglas Fir | New Zealand Let’s dive into some specific essential oils this month just so you can truly wrap your head around the oils you are using in your home. The first essential oil we will be highlighting the sourcing of is Douglas Fir. Douglas Fir grows heartily in New Zealand. It grows so well in fact that the trees actually overtake the land and crowd out some of the native species of plants that inhabit the South Island. Because we harvest and distil these trees fo...r our essential oil, we are helping to combat environmental harm from these trees, therefore protecting and preserving the native ecosystem of New Zealand. dTERRA has created a system to harvest the Douglas Fir trees when they are young (around 5 to 7 years old). This prevents the trees from getting to an age where they produce cones which would exacerbate the problem further. Without stepping in, the young Douglas Fir trees would continue to take over the land and then chemicals would be used to remove them which could also negatively impact other species. As we continue on with this series, you will notice that all of these sourcing highlights have a great outcome for all parties involved! What oil would you love to know the sourcing story behind?

15.01.2022 Canada | Black Spruce Black Spruce dominates much of the landscape of Alaska and specific regions of Canada because of its ability to flourish in areas with long winters and varying topography. The abundance of its growth, however, creates a significant waste problem. The trunks of the Black Spruce trees are generally considered too small and too soft for timber so they are primarily used in paper and various other wood-based products such as chopsticks. Once the trunks have ...been stripped, the remnants are basically left to rot which creates a significant issue that affects both the environment and the local economy. dTERRA along with its harvesting partner figured out an environmentally responsible way to use what may be the most valuable parts of the Black Spruce tree: the branches and leaves (needles). These parts of the tree contain the woody smelling essential oils. The branches and needles are steam distilled, then the remnants are burned by a local power plant. The resulting steam is used to facilitate the extraction of more essential oils. This process is what we call a close-looped system that benefits the environment, several different businesses, and of course us the consumers! Two of dTERRA’s oils Wintergreen and Spikenard grow in different regions of Nepal so the Co-Impact Sourcing initiatives provide critical, sustainable income-generating opportunities as a means to improve livelihoods to various communities across Nepal. Together with our C-Impact Sourcing partners in Nepal, dTERRA has been very active in facilitating supply chain impro...vement and sustainability programs for Spikenard and Wintergreen resulting in an excellent way to support the economy in Nepal and provide income for the Nepali people. Nepal’s 2015 earthquakes had devastating effects on Nepal. Nearly 9,000 people were killed and over 8,200 schools and 1,200 health facilities were damaged or destroyed. Families in affected areas lost everything and many are still working to rebuild their lives. The dTERRA Healing Hands Foundation has contributed to relief, longer-term reconstruction efforts, and community-benefitting projects in multiple communities throughout Nepal.
