23.01.2022 Now is not the time to be rushing to a vaccine. I was thinking through the relationship between the old BCG tuberculosis vaccine and SARS-CoV-2 because there is... emerging evidence that people who received the BCG vaccine back in the day have a lower risk of getting and dying from the COVID-19. This has prompted many people to ask if they should ask their doctor for this vaccine now. COVID-19 is a disease that ultimately kills because of cytokine storm. The immune system going into overdrive and causes the massive release of inflammatory mediators and a reduction in anti-inflammatory mediators. Most of the time, inflammatory cytokine secretion is kept in check by regulatory mechanism that ensure that both anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory markers are in balance. Though not a cause of full blown cytokine storm, vaccines are well known to create imbalances of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Genetic predisposition may exaggerate the cytokine imbalance, as can an existing infection or underlying disease. While clinical trials are starting to see if BCG decreases the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infections, we simply do not know if the vaccine prevents infection, treats infection, worsens inflammatory response to infection, or increases risk of cytokine storm. If we were all up in arms about elderberry, we can’t ignore this. Other vaccines such as influenza and pneumococcal definitely have not been shown to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection. Additionally, we have some evidence that vaccination with the flu vaccine may increase the risk of infection from coronaviruses through a process called viral interference. I really believe that now is a time that we need to focus on nutrition, sleep and stress. A foundational anti-inflammatory diet is key. Most Americans way overeat omega-6 fatty acids, and way under eat fiber, omega-3s, vitamins, minerals and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. Be sure that you are getting plenty of zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin K2, glutathione, CoQ10, magnesium, and lipoid acid. Meditate daily, exercise on the regular, and stay well friends. I promise this too shall pass. How are you staying well? #coronavirus
22.01.2022 Elderberry, ibuprofen, personal precautions and COVID-19. A discussion of emerging evidence. Hi friends! We have written a whole lot in the past week about elde...rberry and whether or not it should be used as a part of the prevention or treatment of COVID-19. There are a lot of posts about elderberry going around that are scaring people, and many people do not know where to turn for information. Same with NSAID pain relievers like ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and BC powders, as there is emerging evidence that they may worsen outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Can I say something a little bit unnerving? One of the hardest things about science is that there is a lot of unknown, especially in the setting of a novel virus. There may or may not be good answers to the questions that are looming large in your minds. Tomorrow, I’ve put together a panel of pharmacists to talk about emerging evidence on the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. We don’t always agree on all of the emerging evidence, and so I hope this town hall can help you take comfort in the unknown. Melody Hartzler (@pharmtotable.life) is a functional medicine pharmacist and she is going to help us understand key nutrients that the immune system needs to function. We’ll also be talking about medications to avoid. Donna Mazzola (@drautomimmunegirl) is an autoimmune pharmacist and she is going to discuss elderberry and special care people with autoimmune diseases should take to protect themselves during this time. Zachary Jenkins is an infectious disease pharmacist and he is going to teach us about standard precautions that everyone should be taking, when to go get a test, and how to know if you might be infected. All in all friendsthere are times such as these where I simply cannot give all the answers that you desire because much of what we know if evolving rapidly. All we can do is study and learn the evidence and go from there. Remembertrue ownership of health is not doing what I say instead of what someone else says. True health is about looking at the evidence and making a decision for yourself. See you-THURSDAY-4:30 pm EST on FACEBOOK LIVE TO DISCUSS. Tag a friend. #coronavirus
17.01.2022 With news of Coronavirus and Influenza everywhere we look, I've had so many people reach out regarding the incidence of cytokine storm, or cytokine release synd...rome (CRS). The term cytokine storm calls up vivid images of an immune system gone awry and an inflammatory response flaring out of control. Before we panic, let's look at the facts. Let's talk about what causes this immune system overreaction: https://lindseyelmore.com/cytokine-storm-what-causes-immun/

05.01.2022 An epidemiologist once told me that viral infections are more powerful than chemical warfare. Wait you mean that nature is more powerful than human engineering?... No way. I will say it now until the end of time, we must understand that viral infections are a part of human existence and that panic is not a necessary byproduct. The media coverage of the coronavirus COVID-19 is borderline shameful. It fails to acknowledge that humans have been getting infected with coronavirus for thousands of years. It fails to acknowledge that the death rates are low, and tend to be in older adults with concomitant disease states like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It fails to put parents at ease that the virus only rarely infects children and infants. It fails to acknowledge that common, readily available disinfectants like ethyl alcohol, bleach, benzalkonium chloride, and even garlic, elderberry, and theaflavins from tea all kill coronaviruses, (though not tested against COVID-19). It fails to acknowledge that more people have died from influenza, heart disease, and medication adverse events than this virus since it has been a thing. Think like FDR: we have nothing to fear but fear itself. Wash your hands people. All is well. Tag a friend who needs to hear this. New video on this subject is up on Facebook. #coronavirus #mediafrenzy #wellness #wellnessblogger #wellpreneur #healthandwellnessblogger #nycwellness #newyorkwellness
01.01.2022 Ladies. We've all been there. We are all real menstruating humans. We all get (or got) periods. We deal with the cramps, the irritability, and the cravings. But... we're also strong, beautiful, and our bodies are nothing to be ashamed of. So let’s normalize how we care for ourselves during that time of the month, and how we talk about our periods. Join me tonight for my first ever Pass My Sweatpants (PMS!) party to talk all things lady business, and how I make my period more bearable (hint: thank you Thinx). That's right, this is a party for people with periods. We're even going to play Pingo (that's period bingo). Register now and join in on the fun tonight! https://us02web.zoom.us//tZArcuGgpjoiEt1YmNoezNzJ_2EkYhzO1 Plus: Ever wondered what your period might say about your health? More on this tonight: https://lindseyelmore.com/what-period-blood-color-can-tell/
