25.01.2022 PENCIL GRASP. Ages and stages related to grasp is a commonly asked about area. This image from growinghandsonkids.com provides an idea of roughly when children develop different levels of pencil grasp. This may be effected by developmental age, low core muscle strength, reduced strength and stability in the shoulder girdle, arms and wrists. OT’s also often get asked about ‘strange looking grasps’ and changing them to a tripod grasp. The most important thing to consider here... is, IS IT FUNCTIONAL? And by that we mean, is the child experiencing pain? Are they fatiguing and unable to keep up with tasks? Is the grasp stopping then from completing daily activities? If so then it might be time to consult an OT. If not the grasp may look different but as long as it’s functional that’s all that matters! Do you have any questions about grasp? 15.01.2022 We are busy bees at OKAY Therapy but we know our learning is never done! We value professional development and like to brush up our skills whenever we can. A warm sunny car in between appointments this morning was perfect for learning more about Pathological Demand Avoidance with Psychologist Raelene Dundon.

07.01.2022 ‘BACKWARDS CHAINING’... have you heard of it? It’s a method we use to help teach skills and build independence. It involves breaking a task down into small steps, teaching the last step first, working backwards from the goal. The carer completes all of the steps except the last which the child practices. This allows the child to feel success with each attempt, then the adult fades back support more and more. For example, when children are learning to wipe after using their bowels (this can be a tricky skill to get), the carer completes the initial wiping then the child has a turn at then end. The carer provides praise for the child’s efforts and as they get more confident the carer reduces the support gradually until the child is independent. Backwards chaining can be helpful with a number of self help tasks. Have you tried it before?

05.01.2022 DYSGRAPHIA. Have you heard of it? Many have heard of Dyslexia, the learning difficulty that relates to reading. Dysgraphia on the other hand is a learning difficulty that relates to writing. It’s possible to have one or the other or both together. This image highlights some challenges that may be related to Dysgraphia. Drop us a comment if you have a question on this . Image credit from Sensory Stories

04.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day to all kinds of Dad’s.

01.01.2022 Ok I know SPEECH PATH WEEK was last week but I just have to share one more post from one of our wonderful Speech Paths, Caitlin (pictured in Telehealth action)... ‘It’s speech pathology week and I have been reflecting on the theme ‘communicating with confidence’. Many of us have now experienced how difficult it is to understand what someone is saying whilst wearing a mask; speech being muffled, having to ask for repetition, not being able to judge their emotion or not being... able to lip read. Can you imagine how hard it would be if you were unable to speak to make a phone call whilst in isolation. How isolating it would be if you were unable to write a text message to a friend or read that social media post. Or what if you were unable to understand the facial expressions of your colleagues on that zoom call and the tone of your bosses!? For 1.2 million Australians living with a communication disability these are challenges faced every day. 2020 has bought about a lot of changes to the way I work as a speech therapist but never have I been prouder of the work we as speech therapists do to help others communicate with confidence.’

01.01.2022 Some food for thought. Remember the importance of being kind and accepting of ALL people.
