25.01.2022 FROM THE CEO It has been a long year for all of us but as the days grow longer, and we embark on the road to COVID-19 Normal, there is renewed sense of energy around all villages, and some welcome news too. We were delighted to receive the results from an independent COVID-19 benchmarking survey of Liscombe House residents showing that they have been 100% confident that they will be kept safe in an outbreak of the virus, and supportive of the efforts that we have made to keep... them connected with family and friends. These results, together with the many messages from families, are a testimony to the hard work of everyone at Liscombe House. Nothing has been too hard or problematic to work through and find solutions. Everyone at OCAV should be proud.

25.01.2022 OCAV GIVES CAUTIOUS WELCOME TO ROYAL COMMISSION COVID-19 REPORT OCAV has given a cautious welcome to the Royal Commission's COVID-19 report. Phillip Wohlers, Chief Executive Officer, said that while the recommendations were sound, ensuring the Federal Government acts on its pledge to implement them is another issue.... The six recommendations include: more funding for staff, a national aged care plan for COVID-19, better infection control and training, and improved access to allied health and mental health services for aged care residents. https://ocav.com.au//ocav-gives-cautious-welcome-to-royal/

24.01.2022 LYNETTE BRINGS MUSIC FOR WELLBEING TO BRAESIDE PARK There is nothing better to cheer the soul than a hearty sing-a-long and that is what Lynette Occhipinti is looking forward to offer Braeside Park residents. She loves singing, working with older people and volunteering. Thanks to a grant from the City of Casey, she is about to start a Music for Wellbeing program in the village and the response has been overwhelming.... https://ocav.com.au//lynette-brings-music-for-wellbeing-t/

21.01.2022 The colours of camellias at Rushall Park.

21.01.2022 Today, the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, we pay tribute to all who served our nation during the war and we honour the many who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them. Lest we forget.

21.01.2022 This week we put the finishing touches to the refurbishment of the Childrens Garden at Liscombe House. The area is now colourfully painted, has fake turf and cleaned up ready for when children can return. There will be plenty for the children to do with their grand and great grandparents from building cubby houses to playing with leaves. The garden renovation has been made possible through the end of year winter appeal in 2019 and the Hazel Peat Perpetual Charitable Trust.

21.01.2022 A major bequest has been gifted to the Old Colonists Association of Victoria by an organisation with a 45-year-old history in looking after older people through day care and emergency accommodation. https://ocav.com.au//major-donation-from-the-house-of-gen/

19.01.2022 Currie Park residents have recently enjoyed their birthdays: Dina Van Dyk celebrated her 85th and Jessie Mills, her 90th.

19.01.2022 PEGGY PROVIDES COMFORT ONE PAT AT A TIME Peggy is a well-known face around Rushall Park, and has built up quite a fan base among the residents. Which is understandable given that Peggy is a Lagotto, an Italian retriever, and a breed known as affectionate, curious and often used for therapy.... Named after the singing diva Peggy Lee, Peggy and her owner Rose Hiscock have been regular Sunday visitors to Rushall Park until the start of the pandemic earlier this year. She has temporarily stopped the visits and is missing them. https://ocav.com.au//peggy-provides-comfort-one-pat-at-a-/

19.01.2022 Staying alive by staying inside... get dancing now!

19.01.2022 Rushall Park residents, together with parishioners from St Philips Collingwood have raised over $900 to enable us to provide Christmas stockings for all the residents of Sambell Lodge as well as a hamper containing games and other Christmas goodies. There are currently over 70 residents at the lodge and more are expected before Christmas. The photo shows our half way effort. Organisers Helen Austin and Margaret Finlayson thanked everyone who had contributed generously to the Christmas presents.

17.01.2022 FROM THE CEO It is finally Spring. There are signs of new life everywhere in our villages: bulbs emerging through the winter soil, birds nesting and trees waking up. It has been a very difficult winter for us all locked up in our homes as we endeavour to beat the pandemic. For all of us, I am sure there have been times when there seemed to be no end in sight. We are all longing to see each other smile and spend time together. Yet I am always delighted to hear stories of how everyone is keeping themselves busy and coming up with new ideas to connect, laugh and live. https://ocav.com.au/news-events/from-the-ceo-16/

16.01.2022 OCAV JOINS NATIONAL CALL FOR MORE SOCIAL HOUSING The Old Colonists’ Association of Victoria has joined over 300 organisations from across Australia calling on the Prime Minister to commit to significant new investment to reduce homelessness and create construction jobs. The campaign, led by Everybody’s Home, is vital, according to CEO Phillip Wohlers, who says that before COVID-19, 116,000 Australians were homeless every night.... Here at OCAV, we know many older Victorians are under increasing rental and retirement income pressure and are at risk of homelessness, Mr Wohlers said. https://ocav.com.au//ocav-joins-national-call-for-more-so/

16.01.2022 Yesterday there was a hush across Liscombe House at 11am as our residents and staff stood in silence for the one minute silence to remember all those who have fallen in wars. This year is the 102nd anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War I in 1918. It was the largest and most costly conflict the world had known with soldiers left with unmarked graves. Many millions more were damaged physically and emotionally. Australian servicemen and women continue to serve selflessly near and faring on battle lands near and far, on and under the oceans. #LestWeForget

16.01.2022 It is Aged Care Employees Day - and we say #thankyouforcaring to all our wonderful team at Liscombe House! Here are just some of them! #agedcareheroes

15.01.2022 We are getting excited. The new apartments at Leith Park are getting closer to opening. They are spacious, inviting, and well appointed. Anyone ready for a tree change in a wonderful retirement village get in touch with Karen on 9431 1100.

15.01.2022 LEITH PARK GETS TICK OF APPROVAL FROM CATHERINE It has been almost a year since Catherine Brown moved into her new apartment at Leith Park, and what a turning point it has been. She has moved from a private rental property and into her own home which she says is everything she had thought and hoped it would be.... The apartment is well appointed, I have delightful neighbours, and the community is kind, lively and interesting, Catherine said. https://ocav.com.au//leith-park-gets-tick-of-approval-fro/

15.01.2022 A BIG THANK YOU I would like to offer heartfelt thanks to the many generous supporters who donated to our Winter appeal. We have received $10,000 within a matter of days, and the appeal is still open.... 15.01.2022 Throwback Thursday: PATTERSON COTTAGES MAJOR PHILANTHROPIC FILLIP Daniel Harvey Pattersons will, which dedicated money to build nine cottages in Rushall Park in the 1930s, is the most substantial donation to elderly Victorians that the Association has enjoyed.... Together with the donation by John Hunter Patterson, his brother, to build two cottages in 1925, the Patterson Brothers philanthropy was both quiet and important. https://ocav.com.au//patterson-cottages-major-philanthrop/

14.01.2022 This may be useful - a range of options for mental wellbeing support.

14.01.2022 A big thank you to #BurtsBees who donated lip balms and hand creams to our #agedcareheroes today. What a wonderful gesture. Thanks also to Kim, our fabulous Volunteers Coordinator, who parcelled them up. #ThanksForCaring

13.01.2022 FROM THE CEO This years Aged Care Employee Day on Friday 7 August is going to be a day of celebrations and thank yous at Liscombe House. And rightly so. We have just been lifted out of lockdown by the Victorian Public Health Unit, a testament to our team of nurses, carers, cooks, allied health professionals, lifestyle officers, cleaners, administration staff and volunteers. They are all champions, and never have I been reminded it of so much as these past months. Read more... about what they and our other staff have been doing: https://ocav.com.au/news-events/from-the-ceo-15/

12.01.2022 FEDERAL BUDGET DELIVERS MIXED PACKAGE FOR OLDER AUSTRALIANS The Old Colonists’ Association of Victoria says that the 2020 Federal Budget was a mixed package for older Australians but far more investment was needed to have the best possible housing, care and support for elders. https://ocav.com.au//federal-budget-delivers-mixed-packag/

12.01.2022 KEEPING OLDER PEOPLE MOBILE THROUGH THE PANDEMIC Vinh Vu cannot think of another job he would rather be doing than his current job as physiotherapist at Liscombe House. Each day is never the same, and certainly the last fortnight for Vinh and his other two physio colleagues, has been quite out of the ordinary as they move from room to room in the Liscombe and Anne Jeffery Wings delivering one on one physio to each resident.

11.01.2022 CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR RETRO POP UP CAFE AT LISCOMBE HOUSE - A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Like most of us, the ageing residents of Liscombe House have been holding out for the simple pleasures of life. A coffee and a chat. A chance to listen to some old melodies and remember times gone by. I think they deserve it after the year we’ve all had. This is why I’m writing to you. I have an exciting idea I’d like you to support one that will bring hope and community to aged care residents... this Christmas time. Can you help me establish a pop-up retro café? One which moves from wing to wing within Liscombe House. With the generosity of supporters like you, I plan to purchase a coffee machine and cart, a gazebo, some tables and chairs, and a speaker to play old tunes on. Just imagine the kind of festive atmosphere we could create for $10,000. https://ocav.com.au/support-our-vision/donations/

11.01.2022 Taken by a Rushall Park resident on a walk around the area. And yes, you suppose right- please wear your mask covering your nose. Were including a useful tip sheet from the WHO on wearing a fabric mask properly.

10.01.2022 CHARLOTTE’S LEADERSHIP PROVES A BOON When Year 11 student Charlotte Cattell heard that Liscombe House residents were missing family and friends, she had an immediate solution: let’s get the school to write to them. She put the idea to the Ivanhoe Grammar Plenty Campus students at an assembly and was astonished to receive 53 letters from all grades, from Prep to Year 12.... https://ocav.com.au/ne/charlottes-leadership-proves-a-boon/

10.01.2022 ERIKA TAKES A RATIONAL APPROACH TO LOCKDOWN When it comes to being level-headed, Erika Mohoric is one of the best. At 82, the independent Rushall Park resident is a listener and observer. She is also a keen reader.... She could not help but laugh when she heard once again about the rush to buy toilet rolls, tissue paper and flour ahead of the second pandemic lockdown in metropolitan Melbourne. It reminded me of the latest book I have read Eggs or Anarchy, which is the tale of how Lord Woolton, Minister for Food, really fed Britain during the Second World War, Erika said. https://ocav.com.au//erika-takes-a-rational-approach-to-l/

09.01.2022 We have been overwhelmed by messages of appreciation from families and residents. We received this glorious bouquet this week at Rushall Park. Thank you.

07.01.2022 The art of poetry is important to Pamela Longmuir, keeping her focused on what is important in her life and the chance to introduce poetry to others in Braeside Park. I have always loved poetry reading and writing it as it is a gentle way of telling a story, Pamela said.

07.01.2022 To every father in the OCAV community... A very Happy Fathers Day - this one is rather different, so stay safe and stay connected.

06.01.2022 Always be prepared. There has been a lot of food preparation going on in Rushall Park kitchens recently. The team has cooked and frozen meals - enough for four days - to be used in cases of emergency for assisted living residents at Rushall and Braeside Parks. If there is no call for the meals, then nothing will be wasted: independent living residents will be offered the fantastic meals ($10 a meal) a month before the meals expire. Well done team!

05.01.2022 Theres something about succulents that Currie Park resident Sandra Cumming loves. She has built up quite a collection 105 in all of succulents in her garden where she can be found most days pottering around and soaking up the winter sunshine. https://ocav.com.au/news-ev/sandras-sensational-succulents/

04.01.2022 We have had lots of requests about wearing masks. This information is taken from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services website: Can I take my face mask off when eating or drinking? Yes. You can take your face mask off when eating or drinking. You should maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres and practise good hygiene. Eating and drinking should not be used as an excuse not to wear a face mask. You must use common sense and wear a face mask, where possible....Continue reading

She has put together a routine which caters for all levels of levels of mobility and includes seated and standing exercise using body weights, dumbbells and resistance bands. https://ocav.com.au//move-it-or-lose-it-is-claudias-mantr/

You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.
