23.01.2022 DOCTOR’S COLUMN Flu Prevention Karen is leading a campaign to reduce the impact of flu in the Yass Valley this winter. Karen is ensuring everyone coming to the surgery is offered the current quadrivalent vaccine it covers the four likely strains to hit Yass Valley. A great idea.... Smoking Elimination Australia leads the world in reducing smoking and the diseases, disabilities, anguish and cost that go with it. Diabetes the Good and the Bad Diabetes has a strong genetic component because it is the gene that keeps people alive longer in a famine, so it has not been bred out. The fuel that the heart and brain use is glucose and in famine it is conserved for these vital organs. The downside is that outside famine it is bad news the risk of anaemia is 3 times greater and the other implications are well known. Fortunately the treatments are very successful. How to Treat a Crocodile Bite I was amazed to read a recent article in the treatment for crocodile bites. Unlikely to be needed in the Yass Valley. The article (MJA 2017) mentioned 14 patients in the Cairns area. Terrifying. The treatment incidentally is Augmentin Duo Forte. Football Concussion, When to Assess Head bangs occur in many sports. Things that require assessment before continuing to play are loss of responsiveness, lying motionless for 3 seconds, needing more than 10 seconds to get up, any suspicion of a facial injury, and jerking immediately after the impact. Women in Medicine Women are already becoming more numerous in general practice and this trend will continue. Not always so. Margaret Bulkley became D James Barrie, dressed as a male, became a successful military surgeon and was not discovered until being laid out at death in 1865.

18.01.2022 The image of a health professional advertising tobacco products was used heavily in the 20th century, with 1949 campaign More Doctors Smoke Camels being the most well-known of these. Data about the many serious adverse outcomes of smoking became better-known in the 1970s. Highlights the importance of a solid evidence base in health care!

12.01.2022 Dr Burns column, now weekly on Facebook! Enjoy. DOCTORS COLUMN Vaccinations... Pauline Hanson has done a good job in bringing vaccinations to the front of our minds. She is wrong but the message is clear. Vaccinations save lives and prevent the disasters like polio. We need electricity Our way of life has become dependent on the little electrons which run around powering refrigerators, traffic lights and all the devices on which we rely. Leadership is needed and the South Australians have provided it. Contact lenses and red eyes Over 600,000 Australians have contact lenses. They are a great help. They need care. The red painful eye is often a consequence and needs treatment. Urgent signs are severe pain, pain on exposure to light (photophobia), and loss of vision. You have a Bakers cyst A finding on a scan sometimes shows a lump behind the knee. This is often a Bakers cyst. Mostly it is of no importance and if it were not for doing the scan for some other reason it would never be known. Rarely it can cause a problem, which can be fixed. Heat the swimming pool Our swimming pool is underused because it gets cold in Yass. Heating the pool would extend its use and benefit the growing number who need a heated pool, not just for a few months. The funds for this are readily got sell the old sale yards or some of the extra land owned by the community and held by the Council on behalf of the community.

11.01.2022 As the weather warms up, snakes have already been seen slithering around the local area. When a snake is encountered, the best thing to do is to avoid confrontation with the animal. 11.01.2022 DOCTORS COLUMN Workers Compensation Restrictions The NSW Government has reduced the period some injured workers can get compensation payments and insurance companies write telling these people that their payments will end. What they often do not say is that there is an appeal system and anyone upset by such letters should see a lawyer. ... Side Effects from Giving Blood There is a rare but unfortunate side effect from donating blood. There can be a weakness in the hand after the tapping of the vein has been done. This was bad enough to cause a colleague to give up the idea of becoming a surgeon. The blood donation setups are designed to approach the right arm - but they can easily use the left arm and this is better. Testing for Prostate Cancer The only current easily done test is the PSA and this does signal when there is a problem. The government line has been that it is not precise but it is all we have and the authorities are coming around to adopting it. It is a good idea and should be done on men as they get older. The new MRI machines can give valuable information about the condition of a prostate. The Flu Campaign Karen Dawes is the leading light in promoting the flu vaccine and this is a good idea. The current government initiatives with flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines will undoubtedly show benefits.

02.01.2022 TRIVIA THURSDAY In the 19th century, the approach to fitness was different. Simple equipment such as medicine balls, Indian clubs, wands and dumbbells were called the Four Horsemen of Fitness and were the basis of training for most competitive sports. Historic doctor Hippocrates used weighted balls to build up strength in his patients, hence the name, medicine ball. Fitness educator, Mr. Aaron Molyneaux Hewlett, was the first African-American on staff at Harvard University, and is pictured here, with the Four Horsemen in shot. Circa 1860.
