23.01.2022 As ANZAC day is fast approaching and I will miss being at a march for the first time in (not about to tell you how many) ? years I thought I would post this picture of my grandson Theon adding a poppy to a wreath on ANZAC day 4 years ago.

22.01.2022 From WW1 to WW2. Crafstman Jack Leslie Baumann. Enlisted May 1940 discharged Dec 1945. Served in Darwin, Port Moresby, Ermaroo, ToraKina, New Guinea, Wai, Treasury Island and Bougainville. From the 2nd 7th infantry battalion, colour patch 'mud over blood'. My father.

22.01.2022 Busy day today. Biscuits & cakes made. Beef rump cleaned up, sliced thinly for steak sandwiches and minced for beef burgers. Beef and chicken marinating for tacos. Ice-cream, biscuits and cake made. And a big soup cook up, home made cream of mushroom and pea & ham. That was just the cook, to speak not at all of the cleaning, polishing, washing etc inside and out. Are we ready? Probably not, but lets give it a go anyway.

22.01.2022 Water is at 3metres this morning. Red circle indicates the top of the 2m to 3m marker. Next marker up starts at 3.1 to 4

22.01.2022 No need to be afraid of the cold at the Old Wharf Cafe. Bistro blinds have been installed for our colder months, but for those who love the fresh breeze and the kiss of the sun, we still have tables on the lawn.

22.01.2022 Well, we have to make a huge apology to anyone coming through Pooncarie tomorrow the 10th of July. Due to the increased demand on our cafe we are currently out of all product, ie No Food. Tomorrow will be a production day, burger patties, beef, roo and hopefully lamb.( Bob will be traveling to Mildura for raw materials for our pies and pasties.)Also all our normal munchies, salted caramel biscuits, gluten free biscuits and cake. WE DO NOT TAKE THIS DECISION LIGHTLY, but with nothing at all to serve except coffee we need to shut down. Just one day. Just the 10th of July.

21.01.2022 My father always said that when the weather broke and the rains came around ANZAC day we were in for a good damp winter. Well, today the weather broke, in a big way. 32mil recieved since 9am in our gauge.

20.01.2022 Beautiful morning on the Beautiful Darling Barka. First pic is looking upstream from the bollards at the edge of the park. The second is looking downstream past the town outflow.

20.01.2022 We are very proud to announce that we have some wonderful new products, locally made, available for purchase or perusal. From eco friendly bees wax wraps, made just down the road, to more of Jan Coombe's emus with the 'come hither' eyes. We have also just very recently begun stocking beautiful hand crafted jewellery using local wood and pure re-cycled silver. OH and we still cook food.

20.01.2022 To all the people that have traveled to or through Pooncarie before COVID 19 just a reminder of what a beautiful part of the world this is with a little bit of rain. Drought not broken, but green is a great colour.

19.01.2022 Skip forward to 2016 - 2020. Private Davyn Baumann, graduated from Kapooka in 2016, served his country with the 7 Signals Regiment as an Intelligence Analyst. In April 2020 continues to serve as a reservist. Following in footsteps that have not faded with age. My son.

17.01.2022 When the town pump could no longer reach the water in the river, the use of raw water in the garden, on our lawns and in the parks was severely restricted. Level four water restrictions meant that to keep things alive bucketing water was the only option. When you own a cafe the water from the sink is often full of seeds from fresh veg used. This is one example of an 'accidental' tomato. It is growing next to our pony tail and has covered a cordyline.

17.01.2022 Baking day. Made some plain and curry pies and a few meat and veg pasties. Hoping to keep up the pace and expand our 'House made' menu with these yummy parcels. Available every day from the pie warmer. OH and I make the sausage rolls as well, including the mince, as I find commercial sausage mince too fatty.

15.01.2022 Thank you to every diner who took the time to review our cafe on Trip Advisor. We are humbled and we are proud. Top 10% in the world. Must be doing something right.

14.01.2022 Today I wanted to shout out to the women (and men) who stayed (and still stay) at home. Weeks, months, years of wondering, dreaming and wishing their loved ones home. Mums, Dads, wives, husbands, sons and daughters. On this post Marian Baumann (nee Blaby)

12.01.2022 Alright, so this is beyond silly. And would be less silly if it wasn't real. I love what our planet gives us, it is a generous and nurturing parent. And somewhere in the strangeness that is COVID-19 the planet laughs. A hearty Ha Ha Ha. I thought I would post a pic of the chaos that was our cafe pre-opening, instead I post a pic that made me smile. Real pic, real plant.

10.01.2022 The leaves are turning, the chairs are packed away and the sign on the door reads 'CLOSED'. As of Saturday a couple of things will be changing. The chairs and tables will be unpacked, dusted off and set out on the lawn. The sign will be turned around at 7am to read 'OPEN' and we will polish our smiles and dress in our best behaviour. Only Ten people in the cafe at any one time, social distancing rules still apply but lets get to know one another again.

10.01.2022 12 hours after first flows the river is coming back to life in yet another way. Dragon flies above, water spiders on and bubbling things under. Please excuse the shocking camera/phone work.

08.01.2022 We are proud to announce that you can now purchase Tony Smiths' new cd from us at the Old Wharf Cafe Pooncarie. The cd 'Stir the Embers' is his follow up to 'Darling River Man', after a 20 year hiatus. The same emotion and all of the personal heartfelt meaning in the lyrics as 'Darling River Man', 'Stir the Embers' is an achievement and a sharing of love, of compassion and of pain. Drop in and grab a copy before its official release, includes the just released single, 'Dance On'.

08.01.2022 Old Wharf Cafe has registered their Covid safe plan with the appropriate government department. We ARE a Covid safe business.

08.01.2022 I was worried that the echidna that had made some of the houses in town its home. Trundling across the dry river bed every evening to make divots in our yard, an in the yards of your neighbours.I thought it might have fallen asleep under some debris in the river bed and been washed away with the first rush of water. BUT I was wrong, yay. Video is of our echidna stuck on the other side. Very hard to see, but he is that little black blob on the top of the opposite river bank.

07.01.2022 At Kapooka with Private Dav Baumann, Ailie Houlihan and Bob Marshall.

07.01.2022 First water to the old wharf was at 6.30am. At 12.30pm I took the attached pic. The first depth marker is out of sight in the debris in the background, just the top few cm's out of the water.

06.01.2022 Due to a recent family bereavement the Old Wharf Cafe will be closed from Friday the 18th of December, reopening 8am Monday the 21st. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

06.01.2022 Water arriving at South Camp Pooncarie this morning. Moving quickly.

05.01.2022 For those of you who might be interested in the more technical stuff. At last light river at the Cafe was at 2.65 metres. The salinity reading when it arrived at the weir rose to 3,000 whatevers. This salinity 'slug' however was no where near as widespread as expected, with the salinity reading at the multi-purpose park of 300 whatevers (I am really up with this technical jargon).

05.01.2022 Tourist in Your Own Town Today, we’re giving some love to Pooncarie, NSW. 05.01.2022 Best place to be on a cold squally day when we do not have a cafe to run. 101.8mm of rain has officially fallen on us this year, as opposed to the 109mm that fell in all of 2019. The return of the river heralded the return of the rain.

04.01.2022 Now stocking 'jamies fine dressings' to compliment our stock of 'Woolshed Pantry' preserves. Just in from our friend Susie Peake a new shipment of lovely colouring in and activity books based around Pooncarie, the Darling river and Mungo National park. As always we stock award winning Varapodio olive oils, vinegars, hand wash and moisturiser. We also have available the very local 'Bentonite Clay' face masks. Collectables from the Ashdene 'birds of Australia' and 'tea for one'... collections. Local indigenous artist Wendy Owen has provided us with one off original works. We have great pleasure in also stocking cards, prints, children's books and the social commentary work 'Death of a River' by Marg Whyte. More lovely artwork is available from Jan Coombe, at times quirky and at others serious, but always with an uncanny eye for detail. Last, but not least on these currently chilly days, toasty warm vests, hats and gift ware from Didgeridoonas. OH, and we cook a pretty mean feed as well. Indoor and outdoor dining, social distancing rules apply. See more

04.01.2022 This photo is of my great uncle Eric Blaby, it was taken in Egypt in 1915. In May of 1915 he journeyed from Egypt to France where he wrote a letter to my grandmother (his sister), stating that the 13th was joining up with some New Zealand boys. He didn't know where they were being sent but they were to be known as 'The First ANZACS'. My family link to ANZAC day began with this man and has continued through the generations.

04.01.2022 Excited about this. Inaugural event based around our little town.
