16.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES | Andrew Van Den Dungen ‘Vanders’ has become a wonderful contributor to our Club over the years. He was Best Clubman in 2004 along with Phil Adamis. He played in the 2006 Seniors Grand Final and has been Assistant Coach of the Seniors for the past few years. Despite this, the only photo we have of him appears to be from CCTV footage Some of you may remember how Andrew ‘Fish’ Mullett, our Club’s master wordsmith, back in 1999 decided to try his hand at poet...ry to lift our spirits on Thursday nights. In his chapter ‘Desperate Days’, The Benchwarmer reflects on a season almost saved by the power of the pen The Seniors finished 4th & Reserves were Premiers. 21 years later Fish is just as active at our Club. Fish goes on to say how cult hero Andrew ‘Pidgeon’ Van Den Dungen entered the literary limelight and reminds us that Andrew was then a relatively new player shy, quiet, but harboured a quiet determination to do well. He became a 150-game veteran. Read ‘The Ballad of Vanders’ p.137 in ‘A Tribute’ Here is a taste ‘Kick the ball to Vanders boys! He’ll mark the thing for sure His long and penetrating boot Will soon reverse the score MORE: obgfc.com.au/club-history

11.01.2022 "During the 64 year history of this club we have faced many challenges, big and small, both on and off the field, but nothing as historical as this. In all instances and especially during this period, it is evident and admirable the positive fighting spirit of all associated with our great club." - Shane Young, OBGFC President

08.01.2022 Yesterday, several members of our Women's teams participated in a relay for Connor's Run from Black Rock to Fitzroy. They carried a football in the relay and each travelled a distance of between 5km to 18.8kms each. Well done to all involved!

08.01.2022 A TRIBUTE | Ross Stewart (Rosco) By Bob McLellan By contributing to ‘A Tribute’, Ross joined a group from our Club whom I am very lucky to have met. A group of passionate, committed members who love our Club. Much of what is said here is included in his excellent piece. (p.457 of ‘A Tribute’, obgfc.com.au/club-history/)... Ross started at our Club with the Under 19’s under Roger ‘Doggy’ Brown, Shane ‘Gonzo’ Young and Stewart ‘Egg’ Murray. As Rosco himself admits, he was very lucky to have met with three such passionate Tonners at the start of his time at our Club. Also, Ross experienced the coaching methods of Dale Tapping, Jared O’Neill and Stan Glascott. He was Assistant Coach to Joe Coy and Simon Williams (now Senior Coach at Caulfield Grammarians). The lessons Ross learnt from all the above coaches were to reap rewards in his own legendary coaching career. Ross began coaching the Reserves in 2010 when Paul McCormack was coaching the Seniors and Adam Pirrie the Under 19’s. Rob Jakobi was President. One year later in 2011, Ross’ team appropriately named, ‘The Invincibles’, had 20 wins and 0 losses! They won the Grand Final narrowly against Old Ivanhoe. Read Andrew ‘Fish’ Mullett’s brilliant coverage of that game in the photos below. Then in 2017 Ross’ boys had another Grand Final win against Old Scotch. The Seniors, under coach Greg Hutchison also defeated Old Scotch on that day in their Grand Final. Ross continued coaching until 2018. In 2002, Rosco won the Senior Best & Fairest Award and later on in the Reserves won two more B&F’s! In 2018, Ross was awarded Life Membership & The Best Clubman Award. Since 2018, Rosco has been Assistant Coach of the Seniors. It is not hard to understand why we are such a strong, vibrant Club when you read about the contribution made by such wonderful guys as Ross Stewart.

07.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES | John Priestley John Priestley was, and still is, our finest ever Full Forward. John played 126 games for our Club and kicked a total of 515 goals, an average of just over 4 goals per game.... In 1980, we finished top of the ladder in C Grade, moving into B grade for the very first time in 1981. John was the VAFA’s Leading Goal Kicker in C Grade that year with a superb, record breaking 117 goals. He was also Runner Up for both the VAFA Best & Fairest Award for C Grade, as well as the Club Best & Fairest, won by Tony Gedye. Drew Bellmaine, who will be mentioned here in the future, unbelievably produced the first 40 (yes 40!) years of our Club’s statistics. His records tell us that John kicked 26 goals in 7 State Games, including a bag of 10 vs. WA in 1981. A mention certainly must be made here of our Club’s first Senior Premiership in 1977, lifting us into C Grade. John played a key role in this Premiership too, kicking 71 goals for the season. That famous year, Nobby Forster was President, Bill McGrory coach and Ian Paroissien Captain. In the Grand Final, Jon Shepherd kicked 8 goals, Gary Jones 6 and John 5. In 1977, our Reserves were runners up too a team with many familiar names who are still involved at the club today. More: obgfc.com.au/club-history

07.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES | The Paroissiens Ian Paroissien will still be a familiar name around BGS. He has given an enormous amount of time and energy to his Old School and has been on the School Council for many years. Also, Ian is a very regular supporter of our Club on match day. Did you know that his Dad, David, was an Old Boy and played for the Tonners Although I doubt the term Tonners was used back in the 30's!... See below excerpts from ‘A Tribute’, our club’s history book. 1. The First Victorian Amateur Team to play in Tasmania 2. The 1932 Old Brightonians Team 3. David's fine record as a player 4. His son Ian wasn't too bad a footballer either 5. The 1972 Team, Runners Up 6. The 1977 Premiership Team where Ian Paroissien was Captain. Lots of interesting people in that photo.
