25.01.2022 The Museum's acknowledgment of country is strongly threaded throughout the exhibitions inside the Old Court House building, beginning with Noongar elder Marie Taylor's poetic welcome to visitors as they enter the Museum: Wanju Wadjuk Nyungar boordjar alidja bilya ngarlarkyalur ngarnt malijee yel dyeeda malyangwin nitje bardook ngullarkin moort kalleep. 24.01.2022 To see out this year with merriment, we invite all the early career lawyers who are attending Supreme Court admissions ceremonies this Friday to visit the Museum for photographs inside the Old Court House to celebrate this momentous occasion! 24.01.2022 This week's Politics and Law Teacher Professional Development day was a great success with participants from schools that reached from Geraldton to Albany! The program featured discussions of recent High Court appeals, the erosion of democratic principles in Hong Kong, and the WA Mineralogy Act; the day finished with a fascinating panel discussion featuring Chief Justice of Western Australia, the Hon Peter Quinlan, former Justice and current Law Reform Commissioner Lindy Jenk...ins, former WA Premier Dr Carmen Lawrence and former federal MP the Hon Michael Keenan. Although social distancing requirements continue to restrict school groups wanting to visit the Francis Burt Law Education Programme at the Museum, staff are busily working behind the scenes to support both primary and secondary teachers. The Museum is still open to groups of up to 20 people for self-guided tours, with larger groups able to be staggered to ensure no one misses out. Please call the Museum in advance to organise your school visit: 9324 8688.

22.01.2022 The next recipe in our Law and Larder series was shared by Jocelyne Boujos, the newly elected President of The Law Society of Western Australia for 2021. This "fool proof" recipe for her mother's magical torte, which was served on special occasions, seems fitting to prepare in celebration of President Boujos! 22.01.2022 The life and legal career of widely mourned United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on the 18th of September, has similar parallels to a number of influential Western Australian women in law. Ginsburg was one of the few women in her classes at both Harvard and Columbia Law Schools, and encountered discrimination based on her gender throughout her career. Ginsburg stridently advocated against gender discrimination and rose to notoriety by argui...ng numerous such cases before the courts and in her position as judge. Trailblazing Western Australian women in law shared similar experiences to Ginsburg, as they navigated the traditionally masculine profession. Lawyers such as Edith Haynes who in 1903 was the first woman qualified to sit for the Barristers Board examinations in WA, but did not qualify as a 'person' under their guidelines and so was ineligible for admission. Margaret Battye was one of only four women in the first cohort of law students at the The University of Western Australia in 1928, was admitted to practice in 1933, and in June of that year became the first women to represent a client in a WA court - and won. Sheila McClemans was admitted in this same year, but found difficulty gaining sufficient employment due to her gender. In 1936, she and her colleague Molly Kingston established their own practicing partnership to much success. Kate George, a Putijurra woman, was the first Aboriginal woman admitted to practice law in Western Australia in the 1970s; and it wasn't until 1985 that a woman was appointed to the judiciary in WA, when Antoinette Kennedy became a judge (and later Chief Judge) of the District Court of Western Australia. 21.01.2022 We love our Frankenstein building! Thanks to Dodgy Perth for the feature!

20.01.2022 Our latest Law and Larder recipe was donated by the late Hon. David Malcolm AC QC, former Chief Justice of Western Australia. Lawyers are renowned for their verbosity and Malcolm himself proved no exception in preparing his recipe for Morning Toast. It is a recipe of pure precision to the soundtrack of Elton John or Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, whichever suits your taste. Old Court House Law Museum collection 1993.39

20.01.2022 A great photograph of the old Perth Gaol at the heart of the revamped WA Museum Boola Bardip. Learn more about the people who passed through this feared building during your next visit to the Old Court House Law Museum. Open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, entry is free.

16.01.2022 The next recipe in our Law and Larder series comes from recently retired Supreme Court Registrars Sandra and Christopher Boyle. Practising in partnership in both law and the kitchen, the two offered up their recipe for Zuccotto. Sandra was responsible for the chemistry and Christopher for the engineering; although he may have had the more difficult job of coaxing the cake into its rounded form, as evidenced by the inclusion of 200ml of "good red wine" as a key ingredient to t...oast the chef's successful Duomo-like construction. You can view the 'Law and Larder Cookbook' on display in our latest exhibition 'Chamber of Secrets: The Unseen Collection of the Old Court House Law Museum Collection', Tuesday to Friday, 10.00am to 4.00pm. 14.01.2022 On Remembrance Day we pay homage to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Today we reflect on the life of 2nd Lieutenant Lindsay Glowrey, a dynamic young Law Clerk who was an apprentice with Smith and Lavan Barristers in Perth when he enlisted in the AIF on 8 August 1915. Glowrey served on the Western Front, writing to his parents at home in the Palace Hotel in Perth that I could wish that I were home with you all now so that I could answer your letter persona...lly. But it is the will of God that I should be 13,000 miles away doing my best for my country in a war that means the saving of the world, and surely you would not have your son doing anything else. In the early morning of 11 April 1917, Glowrey led his fellow soldiers into battle near Bullecourt. He was shot and wounded, and just moments later was struck a deadly blow to the head by part of an exploded artillery shell. His last words were reportedly Tell them that I tried to do my best. Glowrey has no known grave, but is commemorated alongside over 10,000 fellow Australians at the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, France.

09.01.2022 This week, the ultimate round of The Law Society of Western Australia's 2020 Mock Trial Competition was completed. Congratulations to ‘La Salle Legal’ from La Salle College, who finished at the top of the ranked list of teams. This is very exciting for them, especially as they have several Year 12 students in the team who have been involved with the competition for the past three years. Teachers and students were thrilled to be able to enact trials in the Supreme Court of W...estern Australia, especially in a year when many other extracurricular activities were cancelled. Thank you to the Department of Justice for allowing the use of the courts and our volunteer judges, who helped us keep our show on the road after the coronavirus emergency. 04.01.2022 The Museum's audio tour provides a introduction to the history of the Old Court House in Perth. This history begins with the tens of thousands of years of Aboriginal custodianship of the land on which the Museum has stood for less than 200 years. Noongar elders Reverend Sealin Garlett, Dr Richard Walley, Doolan Leisha Eatts and Irene Stanton speak to this long history in their generous recordings for the tour. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCweek #NAIDOC This audio guide was made possible through grant funding from Lotterywest and The Law Society of Western Australia.

02.01.2022 Currently on display, this sketch of the Old Court House was drawn by Cedric Emanuel (1906-1995) who moved to Sydney from New Zealand with his family in 1910. He studied at the Royal Art Society under prominent artists Antonio Dattlito Rubbo, Julian Ashton and Sydney Long. He spent most of his life as a freelance artist, focusing on sketches in watercolour or ink depicting various aspects of Australiana and has major importance as a visual historian. His works appeared in boo...ks, cards, scenic folios, calendars and wrapping paper. In 1981 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for Services to Art. Cedric’s work is displayed in the National Gallery and National Library in Canberra, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria. Prints of Emanuel's 'Old Court House' sketch are available for purchase from Museum reception, open 10.00am - 4.00pm, Tuesday to Friday. Cedric Emanuel, ‘Old Court House’, c.1930s, Pencil on paper. 02.01.2022 Spring has sprung in Stirling Gardens! Follow the purple carpet of Jacaranda flowers from the corner of St Georges Terrace down towards the bursts of bright Kangaroo Paws near the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Take some time to smell the roses before visiting us just next door at the Museum, in the oldest building in the City of Perth, open 10.00am to 4.00pm, Tuesday to Friday.

02.01.2022 Do you know that our collection is open to researchers? This week the Museum Curator has been photographing documents from the Supreme Court murder trial of Audrey Jacob for a renowned local Historian's latest publication. In 1925 Audrey Jacob stood accused of murdering her ex-fiance Cyril Gidley, who she shot in the chest at point blank range on the crowded dance floor of Government House. The jury found her innocent. Pictured here is Jacob's statement, with hasty scribblin...g by her lawyers, and Exhibit "D", the coroner's report on Gidley (Old Court House Law Museum collection 1987.37b-e). If you are interested in using the Old Court House Law Museum collection for your research please email [email protected].

01.01.2022 As visitors step into the Museum gallery in the Judge's Chambers of the Old Court House, this graphic encourages them to consider on whose land they are stepping. The inclusion of this Noongar map, showing the areas recognisable as the south west corner of Australia, was intended as an acknowledgement that this land is Aboriginal land: Always was, always will be. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC
