22.01.2022 I went for a pre-breakfast stroll in the veggie patch this morning and harvested over 2kg of the freshest Broccoli you will ever find. Picking in the morning i...s the best time I reckon. A good harvest of veggies starts your day off just right. This variety is Summer Green, sown on 25 Jan and grown under insect proof mesh. I planted 8 plants and over a 3 week period I will harvest almost 4kg. #HBVG #freshisbest #homegrown #broccoli #broccolisummergreen See more

22.01.2022 Starting to think some of these varieties of tomatoes I see online are Willy Wonker style tomatoes/fantasy. Giant tree tomato, opalka etc. Do people have these growing in Australia?

21.01.2022 I responded to a Gumtree ad. A guy named Hami was selling Euphorbias from his backyard in Hurstville. I rang the number and an elderly, foreign sounding lady an...swered the call. She complained about the crackling line, before telling me that her husband was out in the garden. Just come she said. When I arrived at 127 Dora Street Hurstville I realised Id discovered something special. I collection of Collector Plants in pots, were beautifully arranged at the entrance. I knocked on the door, to be told hes around the back, follow the path, the gates open. As I turned the corner I was met with a tropical paradise. At the end of the path I found a smiling guy called Hami. He invited me into his oasis. Hami came to Australia via Sweden. He and his family had fled the war in Bosnia. His brothers and sisters had gone to Germany, Sweden and America. He and his wife lived in Sweden for 5 years, then they followed his daughter to Australia. He rents this house. Hes been here for 13 years. He moved 7 times before he found this house. He has turned the garden into a garden centre. Its not really a nursery as such. It began as Hamis collection, but it just kept growing. He tells me hes got 800 potted plants now. He buys almost dead plants from Bunnings, he rescues them when they have been heavily discounted, or chucked out. He grows them from seeds and cuttings too. He makes his own potting mixes. Not all plants are for sale. 10% he keeps to enter in competitions and plant shows. 5% are for his heart. I found out later, that more like 40% are for his heart. These are special plants, they keep his heart ticking. They are not for sale. He tells me he has a problem with his back now. Hes 77. He tells me that morning sun is better than afternoon sun for plants in Australia. Plants are like people, when they wake up with sun in their eyes it makes them feel good When he prunes his plants, he seals the wounds with red wax. He collects this from Childrens cheese. He talks passionately about plants, he loves them. I can talk plants, he tells me, they all have different languages He sure can. #timsgardencentre See more

20.01.2022 Silverbeet is a vegetable that I have growing in the garden all year round. Every week I would eat it in at least 5 meals, maybe even more. You can cook it, ...eat it raw or use it instead of a bread wrap. Currently I have 3 different lots growing, one almost depleted because I have picked it hard, a second ready to start harvesting and a third recently transplanted. This picture is Fordhook Giant which was sown on Feb 22. #HBVG #freshisbest #homegrown #fordhookgiant #silverbeet See more

19.01.2022 The difference between potential and reality. This is how my veggie patch looked 11 years ago and how it looks today. I have grown many fantastic veggies in this patch and I am healthier person because of it. #hbvg #freshisbest #homegrown

19.01.2022 Nestled deep in the heart of a lush forest, along a path dotted with around 100 moss-covered lanterns, youll eventually find the ethereal Kamishikimi Kumanoima...su Shrine. Almost as difficult to find as it is to pronounce, this shrine is located in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture and is said to grant visitors good luck. 17.01.2022 I have been growing sweet potatoes for a number of years now and this is the first time I have grown them in pots. People have asked how I grow them and also ...about the trellis system I use. I am ready to harvest the first pots after five months of growing so I thought Id show you the set-up before I trim the plants off and harvest the crop. #HBVG #freshisbest #homegrown #sweetpotato See more

16.01.2022 This looks like the start of something really exciting, the first tomatoes have germinated for the season. By the end of Summer these fellas and their friends ...will have provided me with enough tomatoes to eat fresh, make some fantastic spicy sauce and at least 120 jars of preserved tomatos. Watch this space for tips and progressive pictures on tomato growing and keep an eye out for upcoming tomato growing workshop dates. #HBVG #freshisbest #homegrown #tomatoes

See more

12.01.2022 Question for the brains trust... I saw a row of plantings of grafted gums ... they all look like they are outgrowing their rootstock. The photos doesn’t really ...show it as well as I had hoped ... but on some trees have a few cm’s of overhang .... what’s the consequences? Can they become too top heavy and fracture if they keep disproportionately growing? See more

09.01.2022 Did you know rainwater is a great way to make your indoor garden thrive too! If youre a #PlantParent to some indoor pots its a good idea to pop them outside... when there is rain forecast. It not only gives them a good water, but also cleans their leaves! Its a win, win! The Planthunter

06.01.2022 WINTER WATTLES! With daylight increasing a number of Acacia are coming into flower - hopefully to brighten up your winter. The Golden Wattle Acacia pycnantha ...is Australias floral emblem. Wearing a sprig of Wattle as a national emblem was first discussed as early as 1838 in Hobart Town and of course our indigenous Australians roasted Acacia seed and had a host of uses for Wattles. "Wattle Day" on 1 September is a peak flowering time - but many have also finished by then. There are around 1,080 species of Acacia in Australia and many are beautiful garden plants. These photos are from the Maranoa Gardens in Balwyn yesterday and a couple from a home garden.

06.01.2022 My COVID-19 project - a bird-proof fruit / veggie enclosure. Built for less than $1,000, using lots of recycled steel (and some new netting). Sadly my galah friend Moby (who was helping as always) was struck by a falling pole during the construction, and now has a badly broken wing.
