19.01.2022 Even though it is mid winter, there are still plants flowering and some just starting. Most Correas or native fuschias are right into it, as are many Grevilleas. The nursery is packed with thousands of plants because THIS IS THE TIME TO PLANT! If visiting us from the south via Yolla, come via Johnsons Road as the culvert east of us on Smarts Road is requiring some work after the floods. Access via Oldina Road and Smarts road is fine. Fortunately all my drains around the nursery held up and we had no damage at all.

18.01.2022 Had a great day planting a few hundred plants for a customer on Table Cape. Great views overlooking Wynyard, Fossil Bluff and could easily see snow on the mountains nearby. Some days this job is sublime.

17.01.2022 Even though we continue to be open by appointment only, we seem to have lots of plants around, so are opening to the public this weekend 29th and 30th April from 9am till 5pm. The nursery has shrunk, but we still have lots of trees and shrubs from $2.90 in tubes or $7.50 in standard pots. Good range of Rainforest and local revegetation plants. Photos show some of the plants we have, including Tasmanian Waratahs, Tree Correas, Grevillea Copper Crest and Sassafras. Jim

17.01.2022 If you want to visit an iconic Tasmanian native nursery, you better hurry if you want to see Pulchella Nursery at Buckland. Only next weekend left before Les and Helen close the doors, so no more gems like Correa Buckland Beauty. After decades supplying Tasmania, the end is near. We'll miss you Les and Helen, but hope the Lauderdale Mansion keeps you busy.

11.01.2022 Today Natural State has finished establishing native vegetation buffers for Moon Lake Investment's Pty Ltd - VDL Farms on 3 dairy farms which are currently unde...rgoing conversion to organic status. This project contributes towards VDL Farms meeting organic certification requirements, particularly for dairy export to China. Around 5,200 local native seedlings were planted at Woolnorth (Robbins Dairy), Trowutta (Talawa) and Edith Creek (Poilinna), North West Tasmania. As part of our normal day to day customer service we've been flexible in our delivery and have navigated several logistical challenges successfully including : - Establishing a workforce with 2 weeks' notice, - Accessing planting sites during very wet conditions, - Planting during very wet and/or cold conditions to make the most of the rainfall, - Matching species selection to soil types and site conditions, - Coordinating works with each farm manager to minimise the loss of production during calving and to maximise pasture grazing before planting, - Ensuring seedlings, mats, guards and stakes were delivered to each site in advance of planting crews, - Juggling a busy pre-existing workload. Thank you to the crew of people that we've employed recently to help get this project completed on time and on budget, in particular Gavin, Sue & Andrew. This project was supported by Cradle Coast NRM through the Cradle Coast Farm Conservation Grants with funding provided through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

09.01.2022 The garden plants look good in snow. Guaranteed cold hardy plants in the nursery

08.01.2022 The orders benches are emptying, but the cuttings greenhouse is filling up. Starting to sow seed for next year, so let me know if you have any projects coming up. We are continuing to grow small numbers of plants on spec, but are unable to read minds ( !! blast ) so we can only grow the right number and type of plants if we are told beforehand. Still open by appointment only, so call Jim on 0417391417.

06.01.2022 Daylight saving finishing means a new season, with the autumn flowering plants now doing their thing. This really dark reddish - pink Correa lawrenciana is a seedling, from a cutting my mate Les (from the famous Pulchella Nursery) and I collected a decade ago near Mt Buller in Victoria. Yes, every plant at my place has a story. The Correa Marions Marvel with pink and cream flowers are also blooming, and the autumn banksias like Banksia spinulosa are just starting to unfurl their flowers. The mountain plants like King Billy Pine are unloading their seeds, and the tropical stragglers like Rhododendron lochae still want a bit more summer. Watch out, here comes the cold.

01.01.2022 This is the time of year that many people plant their windbreaks, so I will share my thoughts on what I think are the 2 best large shrubby plants. The Mountain Hakea or Needlebush (yes they are a bit prickly), hakea lissosperma is found on exposed mountain slopes, has scented white flowers that attracts bees and birds, and foliage to ground level, while growing only about 6 metres tall. My other tip is the Silver Banksia, banksia marginata that grows from the seas edge to mountain slopes and also withstands extreme exposure, while only growing 5 metres tall. The large flower spikes can be pinkish while young, bright yellow when mature and fade to a responsible elderly grey. And the birds love the nectar!
