The Old Melbourne Gaol will re-open on Wednesday 25 November, open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, including the Cluedo Experience. We have put measures in place to protect the health and wellbeing of everyone. Protective measures and our Conditions of Entry are available to view on our website. 15.01.2022 140 years ago, Ned Kelly became the 101st person hanged at the Old Melbourne Gaol. After a frantic eighteen months on the run and a controversial trial, bushranger Ned Kelly was executed on 11 November 1880. Kelly remains one of Australia’s greatest folk heroes, a flawed, complex hero whose story has captured the imagination of millions. Kelly’s elusiveness and high profile as a horse thief, bank robber and murderer meant that authorities were under great pressure to bring h...im to justice. His execution had started an intriguing sequence of events that have kept the Kelly legend alive. Immediately after his death, public order was threatened in Melbourne and beyond; a major inquiry was held into the police and their actions; body parts were supposedly souvenired when Kelly was disinterred in 1929, and what was thought to be his skull was stolen in 1978. 06.01.2022 Lockdown? We’ve been doing that since 1845, so we can handle another five days. The gaol will be temporarily closed as of 5pm today, Friday 12 February, in line with government directive.
