22.01.2022 KERATOMYCOSIS (Fungal Infections of the Horses Eye) We're seeing an increase of nasty fungal eye cases at present, if your horse shows any signs of discomfort with their eye, we'd recommend an examination promptly. Failure to Identify and Treat Fungal Infections?... - Blindness or Removal of the Eye - Severe pain and discomfort (Uveitis) - Lengthy treatment and recovery time How to Identify Fungal Infections of the horses eye? - Under sedation and topical anesthesia of the eye, your veterinarian can take a sample of the damaged surface of the cornea and examine the cells under a microscope (Cytology). - From here, the appropriate compounded medication can be prescribed to suit your horses treatment plan. If you have any concerns regarding your horses eye, simply call us or even send a photo/message to 0400 661 447 #equineteam #oldmillvetequine #ophthalmology #cornealulcers #fungalinfections #equinevets #northsideofbrisbane #dayboro #samford #surrounds #yourlocalequinehealthteam

21.01.2022 Hug your horse today, as you’ll never know their last tomorrow One of our four legged friends, who has been part of our very large extended family here at Old Mill for some time now, has sadly passed away this evening as a result of tick paralysis. Our beautiful patient was very much a loved and cherished part of his owners family, we’re equally as devastated. Horses of various ages, breeds and size can succumb to tick paralysis (not just foals). In advanced cases Respira...tory Failure occurs and prognosis for recovery is very poor. Ticks are certainly around at the moment, vigilance with topical insecticides is important as well as daily tick searches. Signs of tick paralysis in horses are very similar to those in companion animals: Ataxia, Respiratory Distress, Lethargy, Recumbency, etc. If ever in doubt about your animals demeanour or behaviour, start by searching for paralysis ticks (this advice goes for all species) Please keep a close eye on your beloved horses, and if you have any questions about preventative measures please don’t hesitate to contact us.

15.01.2022 It’s that time of year... at all hours we’re visiting horses for Colics varying in severity, one thing they all have in common is they’re often dehydrated! Here’s a few little tips from the Vet perspective to prevent colic, or, to mitigate worsening of clinical signs. 1. Find their flavour! When your horse is otherwise well, see what really sparks their interest to drink. - Molasses in another water in a tuff tub... - Handful of copra or similar in a tuff tub Those are a few common enticers to get your horse to drink, maybe make it part of your routine to offer a flavoured water source daily during the colder months 2. Add a jug of boiling water to your horses drinking source daily, remove the chill from their trough. 3. Ensure your horse has plenty of hay or forage available, prevent them from prolonged periods between meals, and ensure bucket feeds are well saturated / wet down. 4. Ensure your horsey first aid kit has a thermometer, it’s invaluable information for us when triaging a patient. 5. Draw a line (permanent marker) in your horses trough or water tub to monitor how much they’re consuming daily. 6. Monitor appearance of manures, if your horses manure seems to be smaller in size, has a glossy shine but quite dry within the manure nuggets, then you may have a problem. We’re not saying hydration status will prevent every form of colic, however taking a few simple preventative steps will reduce your horses risk over these colder months. #becolicaware #colic #horsehealthemergency #preventioniskey #equinehealth #equinevets #preventionisbetterthancure #keepthemhydrated #keepthemhealthy #oldmillvetequine

11.01.2022 Who would’ve thought?! There’s minimal grass around, however, we’re still finding grass seeds lodged under eye lids! (In this case, his 3rd eye lid) This handsome gelding had a slightly sore eye for approx 24 hours, only holding his eye marginally closed and minimal to no swelling of the eye lids observed. A quick sedation, local anaesthesia and a thorough exam quickly isolated the cause of the discomfort.... Prompt attention (like in this case) ensures a good outcome! #afterhours #emergencies #eyes #ophthalmology #equinevets #oldmillvetequine

09.01.2022 Another step in keeping our equine companions safe and healthy is keeping them up to speed with their vaccinations. Hendra Tetanus Strangles... We understand and respect that all horse owners will make an informed assessment for their horses health in conjunction with advice from their Veterinarian, and will tailor a vaccination schedule to suit their horses requirements. If you’re unsure about which vaccinations are relevant to your horse, or you have questions about safety, efficacy, cost and the practicalities of vaccination, don’t hesitate to contact us #equineveterinarians #equinehealth #transparencyinhorsehealth #equinedentalvets #horsehealth #happyhorses #healthyhorses #vaccinations #prophylacticcare #dayboro #samford #servicingthesoutheast #oldmillvetequine #yourlocalequinehealthteam

09.01.2022 Horses & Cancerous Lesions! They’re common and they’re a problem! However, early intervention can prevent catastrophe if caught in the early stages.... Most commonly we see Squamous Cell Carcinoma in horses, this particular cancerous process tends to be more prevalent in horses with areas of non-pigmented skin or within areas of chronic inflammation. Where are these cancers generally located on horses? - Non pigmented areas of skin - Genitals - Lips - Eyes & Nictating membranes Are there any predisposing factors which may put my horse at risk? - Given our horses spend the vast majority of their lives outside, their constant exposure to UV rays is primarily the reason for the development of these cancers, there is also literature to suggest genetic predisposition in some breeds of horses. - We find a high correlation of Squamous Cell Carcinoma within coloured horses (Paints, Appaloosas, etc) because of their varied pigmentation and any horse with chronic inflammatory conditions such as geldings who’ve suffered from pseudomonas infections around their sheath/penile region. These are only examples, there are always exceptions to the rules. How do I prevent this? - If your horse is considered a higher risk, fly masks with UV protection, rugging or providing adequate shelter from the sun in their paddock is one preventative measure. - Regular checks and monitoring progression of lumps, bumps or abnormalities is PARAMOUNT in identifying and treating this condition. A great start, is at your horses scheduled health exams, vaccinations or dentistry visits. Bring up the conversation with your Veterinarian, ask them about YOUR horses risk factors, and from there custom tailor a prevention plan to suit the patient. #oldmillvetequine #healthyhorses #happyhorses #soundadviceforsoundhorses #equinevets #equinedentalvets #slade #emily #joe #demi #yourequineteam #servicingthesoutheast #dayboro #samford #northsideofbrisbane #yourlocalequinehealthteam
