24.01.2022 All going according to plan (and no further bush fire issues), we hope to be able to reopen tomorrow afternoon at 1.30 pm, returning to our normal operating hours. Although we may have been closed, we certainly havent been idle. Come on in and check out our new "A Sporting Life" exhibition, along with displays about the Munn family and their maizena works; local cordial and soft drink makers; and our early midwives and mothering. 24.01.2022 This unfinished sampler was made by Deletha Dowling while she was attending the Mount Gahan School on the Pambula goldfields, C. 1890s. Also known as Yowaka, th...e Mount Gahan School was established in a church building (probably the Yowaka Hall) in 1891 with Sidney Fuller as teacher. He was followed in 1894 by Mr. Cahill. 23.01.2022 A HUGE THANK YOU FROM THE MUSEUM TO THE COMMUNITY: A heartfelt thanks from the Old School Museum crew to everyone who has helped in any way with the Merimbula Festival and Yarn Bombing project. There have been so many members of clubs and groups across the Shire and in Canberra, as well as individuals in the area, who have contributed their enthusiasm and skills to make this a truly memorable event. The street art has been fantastic and the events at the museum have drawn go...od attendances but what has been really rewarding is the happy vibe around the town. There has been a sense of community ownership in this inaugural event which has brought happiness to locals and tourists alike and this augers well for a bigger and better event in 2020. The Festival winds up next weekend with events at the museum featuring a scarecrow parade (it is not too late to make yours) treasure hunts in the museum and grounds and the Scouts and Guides demonstrating their cooking skills. Entry to the museum will be free. Thank you so much everyone Shirley Bazley

21.01.2022 Our fabulous volunteers have been hard at work over the past few weeks cleaning the collection and displays of all the ash, soot and dust that came with the recent bushfires. Weve also been preparing some new exhibitions in readiness for the Merimbula Old School Museums reopening. These include stories about the Merimbula-Pambula districts sporting history; cordial and aerated water makers across the region; and some of the local mid wives from the 19th and early 20th cent...uries, including Pambulas Nurse Cousemacker (pictured). Our display about the Munn family and the maizena factory has also been redeveloped. We thank you all for your patience and understanding during this trying time, and at this point hope to return to normal operating times on Thursday 30 January. #merimbulaoldschoolmuseum #merimbulaimlayhistoricalsociety #merimbulahistory #pambulahistory #merimbulamuseum #exhibitions #museums #sportinghistory #sportingheritage #midwives #childbirth #otton #mccarthy #emley #jackson #cordial #aeratedwater #marblebottles #alleybottles #munnfamily #munnsmaziena #merimbulamaizena #merimbulatourism #merimbulavisitorinformationcentre #bushfirerecovery #visitmerimbula

21.01.2022 I'm the first to admit that I'm more than a bit of a dictator when it comes to the handling and care of historic collections - but every now and then something ...comes along to remind me that our movable cultural heritage can be surprisingly resilient, despite what life throws at it. Case in point being this seal from the Panbula Bench of Magistrates. Dating from the mid 19th century, it was unearthed about 40 years ago in a back yard chook pen in Candelo - and goodness knows how long it had spent in those undignified surroundings before its fortuitous discovery. 21.01.2022 New donation to museum: Among the latest additions to the Merimbula Old School Museums local history collection is a standard hessian oyster sack stencilled J. Spears, O.L. 78-187 Pambula River. Oyster farmer Jimmy Spears, to whom the bag belonged, worked leases on the Pambula River and Lake for many decades. Oyster farming is a highly significant aspect of the areas story. Leases for culture on Pambula Lake became available in the 1880s and by the 1890s, members of the ...Spears family had already taken up areas along that waterway. It remains a mainstay of the districts economy today, with the industry being an important and valuable activity in local waterways including Pambula River and Lake and Merimbula. The Old School Museum also has as part of their collection the highly significant timber oyster punt, built in Merimbula around the 1920s by local oyster farmer and boat builder Gus Cole. #oysterfarming #oysterfarms #oysterfarmers #oysterleases #oysters #aquaculture #oystersack #oysterbag #spears #pambula #pambulariver #pambulalake #merimbula #merimbulalake #history #heritage #mosm #mihs #merimbulaoldschoolmuseum #merimbulamuseum #merimbulaimlayhistoricalsociety #museums #begavalleyshirecouncil #bvsc #merimbulavisitorinformationcentre #merimbulavic #visitmerimbula

20.01.2022 HEBER PERRIN GALLERY AND EXHIBITION OFFICIALLY OPENED: Merimbula Old School Museum was proud to host the official opening of their newly renovated and upgraded display space yesterday afternoon (Saturday, 23 November). Named the Heber Perrin Gallery in honour of one of the museums great stalwarts, his daughter Jenny performed the opening ceremony. In her speech, she highlighted that, being such a humble person, her father would have been surprised by the tribute. Heber becam...e involved with the museum after he and his wife Pat moved to the area in the 1980s. From that time, he played an instrumental role in documenting and preserving many important examples of our local heritage the old school museum building, the Pambula Town Well, the Maizena Tramway and Pages Creek Dam just four among many. He was also a skilled lapidarist and collected, cut and polished stones to set into stunning pieces of jewellery, and some of these were specially displayed during the opening event. Heber passed away in September 2016, leaving a bequest to his beloved Merimbula Old School Museum and it was through this that the work to upgrade and renovate the aptly named Heber Perrin Gallery was undertaken. It is only fitting then that the first exhibition to be installed in the newly dedicated space also tells of Hebers life and his many valuable contributions to the local community. Be sure to drop into the Merimbula Old School Museum to check out this fantastic new exhibition about a humble but extraordinary part of our districts story. #merimbulaoldschoolmuseum #mosm #merimbulamuseum #merimbula #history #heritage #culturalheritage #exhibitions #heberperrin #culturaltourism #visitnsw #visitmerimbula #merimbulatourism #SapphireCoast #begavalleyshirecouncil #bvsc

19.01.2022 Update on 2020 Yarn Bombing and the Merimbula Festival: Another local celebration and community activity has had to be postponed due to restrictions imposed to control the corona virus the Merimbula Historical Society has decided the Festival and Yarn Bombing event, which was scheduled for August, will now be held sometime in 2021. A date will be set as soon as life has returned to normal. 19.01.2022 At the monthly meeting of the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society this afternoon (25 November), members and guests enjoyed an entertaining and educational presentation by Graham Moore. As Bega Valley Shire Councils Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Graham has been involved in a range of projects across the region and gave a fascinating talk about various aspects of local indigenous heritage and culture, including the central role languages play in identity. The Society meets at the... Merimbula RSL Club at 2 pm on the last Monday of the month between February and November inclusively. These meetings are open to everyone and there is usually a guest speaker presenting on an interesting topic. 17.01.2022 EXHIBITION OPENING Youre invited! Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society Inc.s newly renovated gallery dedicated to former member Heber Perrin will be officially opened on 23 November with a special exhibition about his life.... Over the 34 years that Heber was a member of the Society, he was a dedicated volunteer at their Merimbula Old School Museum, as well as other community organisations. On 3 August 2006, the Merimbula News Weekly wrote: Heber Perrin was nominated for his service to the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society over a very long period of time and has been described as someone who is totally committed to assisting and supporting his fellow townsfolk and the district in general. Heber has also played a key role in the Community Adult Education in the shire, involved in the general management, arranging for teachers, co-ordinating financial issues and negotiating for accredited courses to name just a few. He has given freely of his time, knowledge and sound business expertise for over eight years. He has also filled roles on the Committee of the Tura Beach Progress Association and has been actively involved for over thirty years. He is currently a street warden for Neighbourhood Watch in his area. Heber has also been actively involved in community transport, being a driver for six years - its no wonder that Heber was nominated for a Bega Valley Shire Medallion. On his passing, Heber left a bequest to the Merimbula Old School Museum and this has been used to renovate the former Mining Room. Hebers daughter Jenny will officially open the Heber Perrin Memorial Gallery at the Merimbula Old School Museum in Main Street on Saturday 23 November at 2.00 pm. 06.01.2022 Who remembers Pambulas RSL Club? As with small towns right across Australia, many of our districts young men rushed to enlist during World War I. As that conflict came to a close, Pambulas first war memorial, a pressed metal roll of honour manufactured by Wunderlich, was unveiled in 1918 on the porch of the former Post Office. Ten years later the community moved towards construction of a more permanent monument to memorialise the contributions of local men during the Great... War. After years of fundraising, the official unveiling took place in February 1936. Taking advantage of the large muster of returned servicemen present, Mr. W. Godfrey began enrolling potential members for a Pambula and District branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League (RSSILA) (now known as the Returned and Services League of Australia or RSL). By March 1936, the local organisation had been officially formed. Sub-branch activities continued throughout and after World War II, with members such as Bill Hardaker, Ronnie Haigh, Jack Walker, Jack Jones, Fred Whant, John Dorl, Ron Ford, Allan George and Jack Bennett meeting in venues such as the towns School of Arts. By 1956, an auxiliary had also been established, undertaking a range of important activities including catering on Anzac Day, visiting sub-branch member patients in hospital and organising an assortment of fundraising events. By the 1960s, the local RSL felt that the time had come to construct their own venue. Sub-branch member and World War II veteran Ronnie Haigh donated an allotment of land to the cause, while Jack Walker drew up the necessary plans and in November 1962, the Magnet-Voice reported that the Pambula RSL had commenced construction of their clubhouse. Hoping to have the project completed entirely with voluntary labour, Ray Rollason took charge of overseeing construction. After completion, the building unsurprisingly became the centre of sub-branch activities. A luncheon function was held in the hall each year on Anzac Day for local and visiting returned service people, while other on-site activities were also organised. Although the Pambula RSL had for many years been one of the stronger of the local sub-branches, with the passing of time, membership began to wane, with the result that it was eventually subsumed into the Merimbula organisation. During the 1970s, the hall was also used for the Pambula pre-school. It was ultimately sold by the RSLs NSW state branch and now forms part of the Mitre-10 complex. There is no heritage listing on the building. Angela George. All rights reserved. Stay tuned - this entry and more will be part of the digital Encyclopedia of South East History which is currently under development.

02.01.2022 Volunteers from across the region gathered today in Merimbula to take part in a workshop focused specifically on disaster planning in the museum situation. Organised and hosted by the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society along with Bega Valley Shire Museum Advisor Angela George, the event was presented by Mr. Kim Morris, director of Art and Archival Pty Ltd of Queanbeyan. As well as comprehensive sessions on the processes of risk assessment and preparing for possible disasters..., the day included developing responses to scenarios such as water damage, bushfire and pest infestation, any of which could possibly confront our local museums. Kim is a qualified conservator with more than 35 years experience in the movable cultural heritage conservation field, including extensive experience in disaster management training. Workshop participants were drawn from Mary Mackillop Museum (Eden), Eden Killer Whale Museum (Eden), Bega Valley Genealogy Society (Pambula), Merimbula Old School Museum (Merimbula), Bega Pioneers Museum (Bega), Pig and Whistle Line Museum (Tathra), Bermagui Historical Society Museum (Bermagui), Cobargo District Museum (Cobargo), Cooma and District Historical Society (Cooma), Moruya Historical Society (Moruya) and Batemans Bay Heritage Museum (Batemans Bay). Disaster planning is the organised approach to minimising the impact of emergencies that may affect museums and their collections. While preparedness obviously cant prevent a disaster happening, it can avoid an emergency becoming an all-out catastrophe. And that means being aware of the issues that may confront museums and having a plan in place to ensure an ordered and orderly response to those events. The local museum community thank Museums and Galleries NSW for funding the event, South East History Group Inc (SEHGI) for additional financial support, Club Sapphire in Merimbula for generously providing the venue and facilities, as well as their delicious catering, and Kim Morris for covering the subject so comprehensively. It is hoped that training workshops such as this will become a regular event to assist our amazing museum volunteers in the care and management of the precious cultural heritage in their custody. #disasterplanning #disasterpreparedness #emergencymanagement #museums #culturalheritage #training #history #heritage #kimmorris #artandarchival #merimbulamuseum #merimbulaoldschoolmuseum #ClubSapphire #museumsandgalleriesnsw #mgnsw #sehgi #begavalleyshirecouncil #collectionmanagement #collectioncare

02.01.2022 Making room at the museum: Although we might have been closed to visitors due to Covid-19 restrictions, our fabulous volunteers certainly havent been idle. Last week a project that had been two years in the making finally came to fruition with the delivery on site at the Old School Museum of a new shipping container. The idea of using a shipping container for the storage of utility items arose out of overcrowding in the Annexe collection store. We had simply outgrown the sp...ace. With support from Morgans Financial Services plus some of our own money and a donation from Mitre 10 we have now taken delivery of a reconditioned shipping container from Sydney. This will be used for non-collection material, freeing up much needed space to improve the storage of our growing collection of significant local heritage objects. By means of a grant from DSS we have also been able to obtain boxes and a shelving system from Dexion which was delivered free of charge thanks to Bobbins Transport. Our President together with volunteer member Neil Burnham installed the supports for the container, and it is ready for the sitting of shelving. 01.01.2022 New donations to the museum: Among the latest additions to the Merimbula Old School Museums collection is a group of 12 local marble stoppered Codd patent soft drink bottles. During the 18th, 19th & early 20th centuries cordial & aerated water manufacturers were a common site even in the smallest of towns across Australia & the far south coast was no exception.... W. R. Emley established his Bega soft drink factory in 1879, continuing to operate his business until November 1891 when he sold out to T. H. Notley. As the Emley name had earnt itself an outstanding reputation throughout the area, the new owner opted to keep retain it, becoming known as W. R. Emley & Co & in 1892 he took over the Pambula business of Corry & Co. W. R. Emley & Co. operated until 1896 when Colonel J. E. Jackson took it over. Like his predecessor, he continued to expand, buying out the Bega company of Mr. P. Wynne in 1906 & then P. J. Robinsons Pambula factory in 1911. The following year, Mr. Jacksons Bega concern was taken over by John Otton & by 1914, his famous cordials were being sold from Narooma to Towamba. In 1917, he bought out the Pambula business of A. W. McCarthy, but in 1919 the community was shocked to learn that he had taken his own life. Members of his family took over & by the late 1930s, Vic Otton was in charge. When his health started to decline, his wife Alice (nee Davidson) supervised the rapidly expanding undertaking, assisted by sons John & Bruce. When Vic passed away in 1943, Alice & their children carried on until 1946 when Moruya cordial maker Mr. Veitch took over. Ottons was amongst the last of the independent cordial manufacturers to operate on the far south coast of NSW. #coddbottles #alleybottles #marblebottles #antiquebottles #merimbulaoldschoolmuseum #merimbulaimlayhistoricalsociety #mosm #mihs #merimbulamuseum #emleybegaandpambula #wremley #jejackson #otton #veitch #bega #pambula #merimbula #moruya #history #heritage #cordialbottles #aeratedwaters
