25.01.2022 Proud to be adding to the collection TWO original cameras from BTV6 Ballarat (Australia): an EMI203 and RCA TK60

23.01.2022 an element inside a TK76 angeniuex lense, sadly it seems its two elements glue together somehow and like CRT cataracts has disintegrated with age - making this lense unusable. Anyone have a decent lense for a tk76? seems little point restoring the camera when you rarely find a lense at a reasonable price or without this defect :( :(

23.01.2022 An example of what poor storage/moisture does to old tv camera lenses! - these old watson lenses and lense hoods from a marconi MKIII have seen better days! Luckily they have been able to be cleaned up and restored, pictures to follow! Now to find a MKIII camera for these to go on!

22.01.2022 When the videotape equipment takes priority over everything else!

21.01.2022 The Australian Television Archive has just received what may possibly be the only Sony D2 (composite digital videotape format, library management system! (LMS) ...left in Australia. But just what does an LMS do? Basically its a robotically controlled tape based system which can hold hundreds of digital video cassette's held in a tape bay. Each tape has a special barcode that a computer controlled robot inside recognises and can be directed to physically shift around in any sequence into any one (or all) of the six D2 format playback machines housed inside the VTR bay. The machine (which originally sold for approx 2 million dollars) was used in television stations for automated sequencing of television commercials, program segments, news stories, or even entire programs. Today it can still have many uses, one of which may be mass migration/digitisation of videotapes to a modern server based system. Do you have any videotapes recorded on the D2 (composite digital) videotape format you need digitised? now is the time! contact: [email protected]

21.01.2022 AND WE HAVE PICTURES! (And why old equipment needs a lot of work! - and why just having it sitting on the shelf is not always preserving it!) This is the VA board from the BVP370 camera head, as you can see there are many electrolytic capacitors which (probably due to age) have leaked electrolyte gunk all through this board. Not only does this stuff seem to be conductive, it also appears to be corrosive.. corroding and eating its way through components and even circuit trac...ks! To check if this board was cause of no picture, i cleaned it with some pure isopropyl alcohol, and once evaporated put back into the camera. To my delight up came pictures, and the auto-setup features now work!...But not for long, before the board began causing problems, flashing colors and all sorts of psychedelic phenomena! Yes, it looks like i will have to replace every electrolytic cap on that board, and a lot more cleaning yet, but at least i know that is where the fault is! Sadly it also appears this camera is falling victim to the dreaded Sony IR cut filter delamination/fungus problem - why oh why do they do that to us!!?? (Ive heard its still happenig today?).

21.01.2022 WHERE DOES ALL THE OLD BROADCAST EQUIPMENT GO? Sadly, most of it goes in the dumpster/bin. However an ever repeating pattern that seems to continually re-occur is where old broadcast equipment otherwise destined for the skip, is offered to a collector such as myself and despite the company or owner being aware its value is limited they ask "over the top prices" for the items making it impossible to obtain. ... Some years later those same items tend to re-surface (usually by someone who has rescued them out of the skip when the above previous owners gave up on its supposed valued.) They in turn bring it to me for a second time and also want "over the top prices" for it. This can, and sometimes does go on for years, until finally at some stage the new owner accepts nobody will pay those "over the top prices" and they can no longer store it, so rather than it being donated to a good home (or sold for a token fee) like it should have been in the first place, it inevitably ends up in that skip again, and lost forever! Its not uncommon for the same item to re-appear to me 2, 3 or more times many years (even decades) apart in this manner. This is the pattern i see again and again with older broadcast equipment - and is the best answer i can give as to where so much equipment goes and WHY so much no longer exists even though the (right) people are willing to take them on and give them good homes. Its such a shame seeing what still existed, but due to peoples inflated ideas of what it was worth, inevitably leading to its inability to be preserved and its eventual downfall and destruction.

18.01.2022 Just some of the historic tv cameras and other items that form part of the oldtvgear.com collection

18.01.2022 1974: One of the 3 brand new color tv studio cameras just installed at BTV6 Ballarat for the arrival of color. (notice a mistake in this photo?)

18.01.2022 Nightmare of nightmares!, this video shows a problem with the tension arm on a BVH-3100 seemingly unable to cope with rewinding videotape past 8x speed, over reacting and then loosing the plot as chaos follows!. Tension arm has been calibrated, and so many other things ruled out, its still a mystery what could be the problem!

18.01.2022 Can you guess what this item is?

16.01.2022 The "rare" Silver Ikegami ITC-730 as well as the even rarer Mitsubishi "Melvision" television camera which used two tubes! (anyone have info on this one as cant find any reference to its existence anywhere!)

16.01.2022 Work continues on cleaning up this RCA TK60 camera, the screws holding the CRT safety glass and bracket have been mostly broken off or bent with rough handling so replacements need to be sought (anyone have specs or idea where new ones can be sourced?) The rubbery foam cushion around the CRT has also gone rotten making it a very slow job to slowly dissolve and remove!

15.01.2022 The cameras seen in the earlier video have found a new home! and now will be living the rest of their lives as part of the oldtvgear.com collection! Do you know of any old television cameras, VTRs or other equipment that needs a new home? dont throw it away...send us a message today!

15.01.2022 Wow..what a day! we just moved two of these classic Rank Cintel Telecine's that were kindly donated to us! Don't throw away that old equipment!! we can still make use of it and always gratefully accept donations!, contact: [email protected]

13.01.2022 Another ITE studio camera pedestal being loaded onto a truck to be added to the oldtvgear.com collection today! Some of the old studio cameras are very excited at the thought they will get some "legs" and be mobile once again!

13.01.2022 We farewell some equipment today, in the style it deserves. Their record of service, unwavering, always ready to serve, and loyal to the end. #Sony ..We salute you

13.01.2022 Just some of the cameras in the oldtvgear.com collection! - can you name them all?

12.01.2022 Marconi MK IV Orthicon Camera CCU & PSU.... seeking control panel, camera cable and interconnecting cables.

12.01.2022 Hi, my name is "Johnny 5"..... :D :D

11.01.2022 Oh no!, the things kids do to covers of magazines!

11.01.2022 Latest project has been working on refurbishing this Sony BVH-2000 1" machine. Whilst it works well its had a hard life. Years of accumulated dust and grime ar...ound buttons and knobs from dirty fingers has to be removed. Picture show how a near complete dis-assembly is being done to clean and re-lube controls and re-seat connectors etc. This will ensure this machine will work reliably into the future for archive digitisation work. See more

10.01.2022 On the subject of "things dont last forever" - this is a picture of the base of a EEV leddicon (plumbicon) camera tube - sadly at some stage a crack has developed and its lost its vaccum. The milky white appearance and now absence of the "getter" is a giveaway. Sadly this tube will never "see" again. Do you know of any "good" plumbicon tubes still around? Im seeking a good set for the TK45 camera!

08.01.2022 The camera's seen in the earlier video have found a new home! and now will be living the rest of their lives as part of the oldtvgear.com collection! Do you know of any old television camera's, VTR's or other equipment that needs a new home? don't throw it away...send us a message today!

08.01.2022 ASSISTANCE REQUIRED: Seeking someone who can replicate a TK-60 "on air" tally dome (as pictured below). Although its a fairly simple shape to 3D print its turned into a 5+ year project to find anyone that can actually do it! (they either vanish or cant produce anything that looks the part or even fits!). Vacuum moulding is the most appropriate method but this has been quoted at over $1,000 to produce just one item. I am hoping there is a reliable 3d printer wizard out there whom could create a number of these for a reasonable price - if you know of anyone, please contact this page at the "contact us" above

07.01.2022 In news today: The American 525line RCA TK60, today was re-united with its Australian 625line version today in Melbourne, Australia. They spoke about their monochrome memories of the world and events they saw during the 60s and 70s. The Australian version complained how it has been forgotten about for decades and since lost its face and nose, and would like to one day "see" again. Whilst the American version boasted of the wonderful life it had found since it moved to Australia, with lots of TLC and care. :) :) During the reunion American TK60 number two (not pictured) demanded it be next in line for care.

07.01.2022 Proud to now be an owner of a complete BVP-370p camera chain! The BVP-370 was the first camera i trained on back in the mid 90s. Back then to buy one they were worth at least a few hundred thousand dollars! Sadly items like this have since been disposed of in skips around the world, however in this case I have been lucky enough to have been kindly donated enough pieces from various sources to enable me to complete at least one camera chain. If you know of any other equipment needing a new home, dont hesitate to get in touch! [email protected]

07.01.2022 The Sony BVP-370p finally found itself some new rolling legs and was fitted with its zoom/focus controls today. The IR cut filter was removed as it has the common cataract/blemish problem, and whilst it works without it - unfortunately it plays havoc with the back focus only allowing for clear images on the far end of the zoom.

06.01.2022 C3P0 mistakes the LINK 110 camera for another droid!

05.01.2022 Just some of our fully refurbished Sony 1" inch (PAL) videotape machines ready for their next 1" inch digitisation project. Do you still have content stored on this format? NOW is the time to digitise! contact : [email protected]

05.01.2022 The video output from the early 1990s Sony BVP-370p (PAL) 3CCD studio camera (with blemished IR cut filter removed)

05.01.2022 Feel a bit sad, my perfectly good working PYE pedigree television has developed an air bubble or other sort of breakdown in the bonded faceplate on the CRT, just goes to show nothing lasts forever! :(

04.01.2022 The Marconi Mark IV, showing how access is gained to replace the giant 4.5" image orthicon tube

01.01.2022 The ZOOM lense - an interesting video about this exciting new technology! Im lucky to have one of these exact lenses right here living on in 2018 as part of the oldtvgear.com collection.
