05.01.2022 AN ANCIENT WONDER - THE BOAT ROCK The Pangerang Tribe were the original Aboriginal inhabitants from Howlong to Berrigan who are attributed with naming the two nearby towns of Yarrawonga and Mulwala. ‘Yarra’ means ‘water running over rocks’ and ‘wonga’ was named after the ‘wonga pigeon’. Mulwala means ‘big lagoon’ or ‘big back-water’. In 1841 there was believed to be 12,000 members of the tribe along the Murray River. ... The Boat Rock was made by Pangerang people who used the reservoir catch and hold water for use over the summer period. Considerable innovation was shown in its creation. A large fire was lit on the site and allowed to cool. When cold, gravel would be loosened and dug-out. This process was repeated until a hole two metres deep was made. It would have taken countless repetitions to have reached that depth and could have taken many years to complete. The site for the hole was chosen with great care and foresight. Amazingly, only a small shower of rain is sufficient to fill the hole with water, which can be sustained over the summer period. Evidence of Aboriginal people using and protecting precious water sources can be found in many places across Australia but the exceptional quality and beauty of this site make the ancient Boat Rock an amazing cultural wonder. The area around the Boat Rock is home to many kangaroos because of the constant water supply. This made them an easy catch for the Aboriginal people. The Boat Rock is on land proclaimed by the Government, it is not a picnic area. To get to it you must pass through private land. Please remember to close both gates as you pass through.
