20.01.2022 Olive nutrition 101: But which olive is the healthiest olive to eat? The healthiest type of olive depends on what your dietary goals are, although both are rich sources of healthy monounsaturated fats. If you're looking to reduce your saturated fat intake, black olives are a slightly better choice. If you're trying to boost your vitamin E intake, green olives are a healthier option than their black counterparts. ... People who need to limit their sodium intake should make olives only an occasional part of their diet, but black olives are the better option when you do include them in a meal or recipe. With more than 15 fabulous choices in our olive range, we have something for everyone's tastes! Come and see us this weekend and ask for a taste of something new Celebrate life with Olive Envy ! 17.01.2022 The olive tree is surely the richest gift of heaven. I can scarcely expect bread. -Thomas Jefferson The versatile #olive can be eaten as an #appetiser, on its own, stuffed, or used as a cooking ingredient and has been a staple of Mediterranean cuisine for centuries. The small, oval olive fruit has a flavour ranging from salty to mild and sweet. It can be harvested at any stage the immature fruit is green which then turns red-brown, to black when fully ripened whic...h accounts in part for the many variations in flavour and texture. Here are a few of our favourite varieties we like to use at Olive Envy Kalamata : Originating from and named after the region of Kalamata in Greece, this olive is a black, medium-sized fruit with a salty flavour, and is the most popular olive in Australia. Niçoise : A small black French olive, the Niçoise has a nutty flavour and is traditionally used in the salad of the same name. Ligurian : A small oily Italian black olive with a mild flavour, the Ligurian olive makes a good addition to fish dishes. Want to sample some different varieties in person? 09.01.2022 olive history 101: Today Dr Ibram Akhbar from THE ROYAL SOCIETY JOURNAL is here to shed some light on the history of the olive tree as we know it. ........ "The cradle of primary domestication of the olive tree is located in the north-eastern Levant, where populations currently contain substantial genetic diversity, although not the highest in the Mediterranean basin (i.e. the Strait of Gibraltar). This paradox can be explained by the fact that advanced civilizations... emerged in the north Levant, such as the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, and that they had enough genetic resources to succeed in domesticating a self-incompatible tree The domestication of the olive tree appears to have been a long and continuous process that involved numerous genetic exchanges between the cultivated trees and wild gene pools, as already reported for other crops. The first domesticated gene pool of olive was more likely to have spread with agriculture, first to the whole Levant and Cyprus before being progressively disseminated to the western Mediterranean. Genetic evidence for multi-local origins of cultivars previously reported by several authors may be explained by secondary domestication events involving crosses between newly introduced cultivars and local oleasters across the entire Mediterranean." So, in layman’s terms scientific evidence indicates that the olive tree (Olea europaea) was most likely first cultivated on the border between Turkey and Syria, spreading from there throughout the Mediterranean, to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, Italy, France, and Spain. Thus creating the modern day envy we have for our olives, here, at Olive Envy!
