25.01.2022 Pressing flowers! I like doing pretty much anything with flowers, but pressing them is definitely up there with my favourites. . We have a few presses, a large one that we made, and 3 small ones by Mrs Green Pocket Flower Press that the girls keep in their ‘Art on the go’ bags. We take these on walks and other journeys for spontaneous creative bursts. I recently bought this medium sized press from local company @sownsow as all our others were full and I love it! ... . The girls and I did some pressing today to get ready for some Christmas gift tag making! Will share as the weeks progress. What else do u love to do with pressed flowers? #flowerpressing #flowerpress #flowerart #ecochristmas #handcrafted #homemade #plasticfreefun #natureplay #naturalchildhood #innerchild #craft #organicflowers #underthefloralspell #botanicalart #botanical #mothernature #plasticfreechristmas

25.01.2022 Finally harvesting our crop of garlic! And of course I want to keep the scapes for dried floral arrangements. Hopefully this lot will keep our family in garlic all year! I love when food and beauty combine. Happy Sunday!

25.01.2022 Would you know a slow flower if you saw one? I had a lovely chat with ABC’s Andrea Gibbs live this afternoon about growing flowers and why buying flowers locally has become more important this year than ever before. I feel humbled to be having these important conversations with people, knowing my farm is so small and there are so many wonderful small scale growers doing such inspiring work. It feels exciting to be part of this growing movement of ‘Slow Flowers’ in Australia.... One interesting question that Andrea asked was: How can we tell the difference between an imported flower and a locally grown flower? Basically it’s really hard, mainly due to the fact that we have no labelling laws in Australia. As approximately 80% of flowers you’ll see in the supermarket are imported, you basically need to check where they were grown on the label or ask a staff member if they know. If in doubt, don’t buy them. Especially if they are wrapped in plastic and look fake or dyed. There are heaps of local Australian growers emerging into the limelight since imports have been harder to come by, and its a win win for everyone. Fresher product, more sustainable and supporting our farmers and economy. 24.01.2022 End of year flower gifting is starting to happen! Today I'm delivering a special bunch to Cedar's ballet teacher for helping her through her first exam, and it's getting to that time of year for giving to teachers and others as a thank you for their efforts during the year. When buying flowers, it's good to consider the environmental impact of your purchase. Flowers are often grown with chemicals, imported from overseas, dyed and then wrapped in large amounts of pla...stic. Not really an earth friendly product at all, although we often think of them this way. Look for florists and flower growers that support local flowers and use only biodegradable packaging. I'm taking DM's for end of year gatherings in the Northern Rivers Region now, or let me know where you are and I'll try and hook you up with a local 'slow flower' farm. 23.01.2022 We've been digging up a storm, forming up some new flower beds in the top patch. Longer rows that are wider with slightly larger paths so I can get the wheelbarrow through again. Thanks to Tess & Alex here. #flowerfarming #farmerflorist #organicfarming #smallfarm #northernrivers #organicfarm #womenwhofarm

21.01.2022 Farmers Markets. It’s been cool to experiment with where to sell our flowers over the past four years and it’s constantly evolving depending on how many we have ready to sell. As we are stepping things up a bit and increasing our growing space we have been working on our farmers market set up. I’m definitely not the most practical when it comes to packing it’s a balance between what’s easy and what looks good. Each time we are simplifying and working out more effic...ient ways to do things, while still keeping it looking good. I really like to still take my glass vases and set it up as a pop up florist, making bunches as I go to suit the buyer. It’s a bit of extra effort to pack, but it’s worth it and I’m finding more hacks every time. I also love to wholesale to @ourlittleflowerfarm & local florists when we have the stock. I find you need to grow differently to suit the different situations. If your a grower, I’d love to know where you sell yours? Cafe, market, florist, more? #flowerfarming #farmerflorist #growingflowers #flowerbusiness #slowflowers #grownnotflown #farmersmarket #farmersmarkets

20.01.2022 When it’s time to collect seeds! Despite my seed addiction habits, I still try to collect my own seed as much as possible. Seeds keep adapting to local growing conditions, so often get better and better. In a small scale flower garden, I often don’t have the luxury of letting each variety go to seed, but some plants like #queenanneslace make it super easy. These also self seed beautifully if your happy to keep them in the same place and the beneficial insects, including bee’s..., love them! 19.01.2022 Oh sweet sweet Cafe. You are the Rose of my dreams, but why dear floribunda, do you hug the ground and fail to reach to the sky like your friends? I'm stock taking my roses this week and doing a cull. I do love her so but she's a bit of a pill when it comes to cutting. Sigh. To keep or not to keep? That is the question. #underthefloralspell #farmerflorist #slowflowers #organicgardening #fortheloveofroses #botanical #assheis #smallfarm #gettingitdone #grownnotflown #northernrivers

15.01.2022 Summer Earth Garden is on its way, and I’m on the cover... eeep!! I started writing for the EG crew about a year ago now after meeting the lovely EG writer @rachelaltenbacher and striking up a new friendship. She came to visit us and did a little story on our farm, and then I was asked to do one of my own... the rest is history! It’s really re-ignited my love of writing and story telling. I used to write songs as a creative outlet and I have really missed it. Writing about our life isn’t something I planned to do, but I’m finding it is really helping me to reflect on our journey and how much I still enjoy connecting with people, through story and sharing. I equally love hearing others stories, which is why @earthgardenmagazine is such a great read.

13.01.2022 Dahlia dreaming. . Pretty stoked that my laziness of not digging up my dahlias this year has resulted in awesome early dahlias!

13.01.2022 Our newest chicks are growing up and are now in the funny reptilian stage when their necks are long, and they look a bit like awkward teenagers. They're still very cute and are getting lots of cuddles to keep them tame and prepare them to join the big girls soon. Cedar (9) looks after them and does the daily egg collection and care of all the chooks, but all the kids love them. Its part of our homeschooling to have them get involved and have autonomy of particular projec...ts. She's hoping to have enough to sell soon as a little business. The girls all have their little neiches that they love to focus on and help out with. It's great to have them weave in and out of what we are doing and watch them find their own little passions as they evolve. Got any yummy tips for fresh eggs? We've added a few of our fav's in stories. See more

08.01.2022 Alex definitely has a thing for the girls! With Tess, Nina, myself and our three girl’s, he’s definitely out numbered on the farm, but the other girls in his life are his favourite young heifers. We bought them from drought effected country a while back and they were pretty worse for wear. It continues to be a big journey to learn how to care for their wellbeing and help them to thrive on our land. ... Livestock are an integral part of our organic management system helping us manage weeds and improve the soil. Alex has been following Natural farming methods by Pat Coleby and reading up as much as possible on organic cattle management. Giving them nutritious treats to boost them up is part of it. #regenerativefarming #naturalfarming #farmlife #patcoleby #holisticmanagement #certifiedorganic #cattle #australianfarming #smallfarmcharm #sustainableliving #australiancertifiedorganic #organicfarmer #cowlove #workingwith #closedloop #animalwellness #caringfortheland

08.01.2022 These cute things just announced some very cute news! 06.01.2022 We finally have some WWOOFERS! (stands for willing workers on organic farms). Well, they are with @workawayinfo actually, but our family seem to call any live-in volunteer a 'wwoofer' out of habit. We used to have lots of travellers come to work on our community in return for yummy food and accommodation. They would learn about #organicfarming and also get their 2nd-year visas, but slowly with changes in government regulations, things slowed down, and then, well... COVID... and all. These guys staying now have been in Australia for a while. They met, went into lockdown together, and are finally able to see some of the Country. It's so nice to have the world come to us! We haven't even been away for a weekend all year! Definitely getting itchy feet, but I'm living vicariously for now. This pic is from a dreamy wedding I flowered last year, the last time I had a wwoofer from England. He's just ahead of me, covered in biodynamic Kangaroo Paw. Lol. These two beauties pictured on their special day have since become friends of ours and Tony has been guiding us through introducing more biodynamic practices on the farm. His company @browniesbd is a consultation service in Biodynamics, and he is awesome. Was lucky to meet them by doing flowers at their wedding! See more
