24.01.2022 Time to spray your lawns for the control of clover and broadleaf weeds. It is time to spray your lawn for weeds; a weed free lawn in winter ensures a stronger, healthier lawn in summer. It is vital that you dont allow your weeds to flower and seed. If the weeds are left to seed, they will multiply and cause an increase in germination next year. 1 year seed = 7 year weed!... Spraying now will avoid a prickle problem in your lawn during the summer. See more
24.01.2022 Pruning A few minutes spent pruning is one of the best things you can do for the plants in your yard, but it's one of the most neglected tasks of home owning. The risks of butchery seem high, and the rewards low. But once you've mastered them, it's just a matter of timing. ... Pruning Flowering Shrubs. Young shrubs should be pruned lightly to make them grow fuller and bushier. This type of pruning, called heading, encourages lower side branches to develop and enhances the shrub's natural form. These cuts help maintain the plant's natural shape, limit its size, and open up the interior branches to light and air, which keeps interior branches healthy, stimulates growth, and increases flowering. Older and Neglected Shrubs Neglected shrubs may call for a more drastic approach: hard pruning. Most deciduous shrubs that respond well to renewal pruning can also take hard pruning, cut back all stems to within an inch of the ground during the plant's winter dormancy then when it comes spring, the plants will quickly produce new shoots from the base. Of course, this technique will leave you with little to look at while waiting for the new growth. Pruning Small Flowering Trees. Avoid pruning a young or newly planted tree it needs as many leaves as possible to produce the food required for good root growth. Remove only dead, broken, or injured branches, as well as those that cross or rub each other. And always prune back to a healthy stem or branch without leaving stubs. This eliminates hiding places for pests and diseases, and looks better. Never cut back the plant's leader the top-most growing point of the tree which is vital to letting the tree develop its natural form. Late Winter/Early Spring Pruning Prune spring-flowering plants immediately after their blossoms fade. Because they produce flowers only on old growth from the previous season, pruning soon after bloom will maximize flower production the next year.

20.01.2022 Middle July already here, and it is a great time to start pruning your roses. We recommend on completion of pruning to follow up with a spray of Lime Sulfur to the roses. This will assist with the control of fungal diseases and pests. Once completed add a good quality blended organic mix to the soil around the roses - we recommend a mix of sheep and cow manure (Do remember to avoid placing near native plants). Pruning roses is important because it helps to reduce disease, encourages air circulation and lets more light in. This means the plant is focusing its attention and energy on producing beautiful blooms for next season. In winter roses need a stronger prune to encourage good, solid, new growth.
20.01.2022 Ameliorants - Wetting agent Wetting agents are substances that help water soak into the ground. Patches of soil that resist wetting can severely damage yours grass and gardens by preventing water from reaching the root zone. A wetting agent can loosen this stranglehold and allow moisture to penetrate down into the soil. The primary purpose of wetting agents is to increase the free flowing of water throughout the soil profile for both lawns and gardens. When organic matter br...eaks down, it leaves a waxy coating on the soil particles. Wetting agents are like detergents. They overcome that waxing coating and allow water to penetrate into the pore spaces. Once applied, the grains of the Wetting Agents can continue to be seen for days later. This is because the grains themselves are not the Wetting Agents. The grains are simply grains of cork or other substance which has the liquid wetting agent applied to them. When we water the Wetting Agents in, the actual Wetting Agent hydrates and release itself from the cork and enter the soil, leaving the cork grains behind to naturally break down into the soil. Twice a year is usually optimum for most lawns and gardens with water issues, once in Spring and once again in Autumn.
19.01.2022 "Life Goals" HAPPY FRIDAY
18.01.2022 Gardening can be relaxing, but safety must come first: Gardening is a relaxing and enjoyable form of exercise, but it can pose health risks. If youre careful, you can enjoy the benefits of your garden in good health. Ignoring safety precautions and using the wrong tool for the job are common causes of gardening injuries. Be sun smart in the garden... Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can start to burn unprotected skin within minutes, so wear a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and a broad-brimmed hat is recommended. Sunscreen to unprotected skin 20 minutes before going outside is also recommended. When lawn mowing: Common lawnmower injuries include open wounds and bone fractures involving the hands and feet. Eye injuries can also be caused by the mower blades flicking up debris such as sticks and stones. Safety suggestions include: Wear enclosed shoes when mowing the lawn, preferably safety boots with steel toecaps. Wear appropriate eye protection, such as safety goggles. Wear long trousers, preferably made from a heavy fabric such as denim, to protect your legs against flying debris. Ride-on mowers can tip. Drive at slow speeds, especially when turning. Take extra care when pulling the mower towards you or mowing on slopes, to avoid foot injuries. Lawnmowers can also cause burns, so be careful not to touch hot equipment parts. Dont overdo it in the garden Gardening can cause back pain and overuse injuries so avoid long gardening sessions and warm up before gardening with slow, sustained stretches and remember to do basic back stretches during your gardening. Rotate your tasks to avoid repetitive movements. For example, after 15 minutes of raking, swap to pruning for a while. Rest frequently and relax in the shade with a drink of water. Avoid uncomfortable positions. Bend at the knees and dont strain when lifting heavy objects. If the object is too heavy for you, seek help. Hand safety in the garden Always wear gardening gloves to protect your hands against cuts, soil, insect bites and skin irritants. Leather gloves offer protection against puncture injuries from thorns and bites. Use appropriate tools for digging instead of your fingers (for example, a shovel or hand shovel). Buried objects such as tree roots, glass and metal can injure your hand, wrist or arm while digging.

15.01.2022 Irrigation, thatch and dry patch management. Unless irrigated via a bore, most home lawns are subject to water restrictions. Typically they are watered twice a week using a standard reticulation system for about 15 minutes. Make sure your sprinklers are working and water distribution is even. Water repellence may be noticed in Perths soil as the season progresses. This becomes apparent through water ponding and water infiltration into only the top layer of the soil profile. Water penetration can be greatly improved by applying wetting agents and coring your lawn (which not only removes an amount of thatch but allows water and nutrient penetration to heavily used lawn)

13.01.2022 Ameliorant - Fertilizers NPK Plants need to be fertilized because most soil does not provide the essential nutrients required for optimum growth. Even if you are lucky enough to start with great garden soil, as your plants grow, they absorb nutrients and leave the soil less fertile Chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers show their nutrient content with three bold numbers on the package. These numbers represent three different compounds: Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash... (Potassium), which we can also describe with the letters N-P-K. - Nitrogen: Used by plants for lots of leaf growth and good green color. - Phosphorous: Used by plants to help form new roots, make seeds, fruit and flowers. It's also used by plants to help fight disease. - Potassium: helps plants make strong stems and keep growing fast. 10.01.2022 Pests are unwanted plants, animals, insects, germs or other organisms that interfere with human activity. They may bite, destroy food crops, damage property, or otherwise make our lives more difficult. At this time of the year its important to keep your eyes open to recognize and treat some the most common native plant pests. Aphids Aphids are small, 1-3mm, soft-bodied insects that can be green, grey, or black. They are a common pest on everlastings all year round, but are c...ommonly seen in spring and autumn on other plants. Aphids can be winged or wingless and are usually slow-moving Borers Borers are insects, which bore holes into native or exotic plants. A range of insects is involved, mostly beetles and their larvae. They live mainly in living, but generally weakened plants and in bad cases cause death. Groups of borers include beetles, wood moths, weevils and termites. Crusader bugs Crusader bugs commonly attack wattles and cassias and to a lesser extent eucalyptus, hibiscus and a wide range of exotic plants. They are about 20mm long, most active in summer and cause shoots and owers to wilt and die. Lerps Lerps are sap sucking insects which attack the leaves of a variety of native plants, particularly eucalypts. Like scales, the insects are protected with a waxy covering. They attack new shoots and leaves and cause severe distortion, bronzing of leaves and death of tissue. Like other sap-suckers, they produce honeydew, which encourages the growth of sooty mould. Soon after a lerp infestation, leaves turn brown and are shed prematurely. Mealybugs Mealybugs are small sapsucking insects covered in a white protective wax which are usually found in protected areas. They are a year round problem on indoor or glass house pot plants as well as outdoor palms and ferns. Occasionally, mealybugs affect other plants such as grevilleas and wattles. Scales Scale insects are about 23mm long and attack a wide range of plants including Western Australian peppermints (Agonis exuosa) and eucalypts. Scales are sapsuckers and also cause a fungus, known as sooty mould which grows on the sugary excretions of the scales. Severe infestations of scale insects can result in defoliation, retard growth, and can result in plant death. 08.01.2022 Don't forget to reduce your watering times
07.01.2022 Mulching, Why? Mulching is generally used to improve the soil around plants, but it also gives your garden a neat, tidy appearance and can reduce the amount of time spent on tasks such as watering (up to 75% as it protects the soil from evaporation) and weeding (by inhibiting the germination of weed seeds). It will not just suppress weeds and slow moisture evaporation, but should also provide valuable nutrients as the mulch breaks down (encourages worms, which aerate the soil and provide fertilizer in the form of worm castings). Normally, mid- to late spring is the best time to put down mulch, so contact us today to find out how we can get your garden looking its best.
06.01.2022 Summer Aussie summers can be pretty harsh, and this fact combined with distractions on the social front means that December tends to be a month of general maintenance and enjoying the results of your previous work, rather than major garden projects. So its important to take a bit of extra time now caring for your garden so it survives and thrives during the hotter months. Water your garden deeply but less frequently to encourage strong and healthy roots. Its also a good ide...a to do your watering in the morning before it gets too hot; your garden will stay hydrated for longer and it also helps to reduce the risk of fungal disease. Don't forget the pot plants - light rains might freshen up the garden but does little if any rain will reach the potting mix of container plants. In hot windy weather they'll especially prone to water loss, so check regularly. Remember that once dried out, the potting mix may require some effort to re-wet thoroughly Mulch will keep the soil moist, give protection from the sun and itll also help to keep weeds at bay. Lightly mulch your potted plants and keep them out of the harsh sun as much as possible. Its also important to aerate your lawn with a fork to get more oxygen into the soil and allow water to penetrate the roots. Dont forget to raise your mower blade too longer grass means longer roots and cooler soil. If you are planning a trip, consider installing a reliable irrigation system so your plants still get the water they need. And if you need some other help, contact us to find out how we can get your garden looking its best.
05.01.2022 Water for Plants Watering your garden is one of the most important things for your plants to really thrive. But how much water is enough and how much water is too much? Plants that are over watered can develop rot. Over watering can be just as harmful to plants as under watering. A good rule of thumb to know when watering your garden needs is to check the soil. If the soil is mostly dry but a bit damp you should plan on watering that day. If the soil is moist you probably do...nt need to water. If the soil is wet then you definitely shouldnt water. When you water, keep the hose aimed at the ground to make sure that the soil and the area around the plants roots gets wet. Misting the water over the top of the plant doesnt do much to give the plant the water it needs. Dig down into the soil around the plants a bit so that the water can go down directly to the roots or build an irrigation system in your garden that will help deliver the water directly to the plants roots, and if this is the case, contact us and we can give you information that helps support a water wise garden. 02.01.2022 Early spring temperature fluctuations can cause sporadic lawn growth. Proper mowing is critical to the maintenance of a high quality lawn. If rapid lawn growth occurs, infrequent mowing will result in scalping of the turf. The frequency of mowing should be timed to remove no more than 1/3 of the leaf tissue. A week of 18C days and mild nights and the couch grass wakes up from winter dormancy. Then we get a week where overnight temperatures drop dramatically with mo...rning frosts and the grass stops growing. The poor grass doesnt know where its at. Around mid-September, the lawns will kick off again, a light fertilizer will help at this time. This is the time of year that you need to be assessing your lawn to see if it needs vertimowing or coring. Assess the volume of clippings removed each cut. If it is significantly more than your previous cut, then you should increase mowing frequency immediately. See more
01.01.2022 Heat and Plants Gardening is never easy, but hot weather can be especially tough on you and your plants. So far this summer is promising to be a hot one, however theres several easy tricks that can keep your plants cool, productive, and even lessen your water usage. First of all it is important to know that well-nourished, disease free plants will tolerate the stress of hot weather much better than those already struggling. Your watering schedule will obviously be unique to ...your garden but you should work hard to maintain moist soil conditions. Waiting for plants to start wilting before you realize its time to water harms your plants health and reduces your harvest. For pots and herbaceous beds, its best to water first thing in the morning or last thing at night to avoid damaging plants. When the sun shines on water it can act like a magnifying glass, burning the leaves below. Mulch is one of the easiest ways to keep soil temperatures cooler and moisture levels up. Plus mulch cuts down on the weeding Wind tearing through your garden can not only damage plants but also causes soil moisture to evaporate. The easy solution to this is to install or grow windbreaks in your garden. If youre transplanting crops into your garden its best to avoid the heat and sun as much as possible. Transplant in the early morning, late evening, or on a cloudy day for best results. The plants will suffer less transplant shock that way. When plants are young theyll adapt more readily to the amount of water they receive, and get used to irregular watering. If you know its going to be a hot summer, its worth bearing this in mind with your younger plants. See more
