23.01.2022 Seminar I Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning Research Tuesday 20 August, 4.30pm 5.30pm Old Arts Building, Room 107 (William Macmahon Ball Theatr...e) The University of Melbourne Presented by Dr Hannah Robertson, Innovation Fellow, Monash University Chaired by Associate Professor Andrew Hutson Deputy Dean, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning Title: Remote area and community led research: a socio-ecological approach to construction This seminar contextualises remote area research in Australia as characteristically Indigenous with a set of compound building challenges that bear greater resemblance to economically developing contexts internationally than urban contexts domestically. Due to an underrepresentation of remote areas in systems and construction literature, and neglect of the smallest Indigenous settlements in government policy, there is a significant gap in understandings. Furthermore, the small scale and isolation of remote contexts provides fertile ground for community led research innovation across the technological, environmental, socio-cultural and economic dimensions of construction. Originating in volunteer work and practical projects, this seminar charts the evolution of a socio-ecological approach that seeks to understand the role of construction design, systems and policies in remote area and community led contexts. This seminar explains the key research findings of both traditional academic outputs and non-traditional research outputs including built works, consultancy reports and policy white papers. The seminar discusses how the Olkola Aboriginal Corporation Cultural Knowledge Centre Project at Monash UniversityUniversity is informing an emergent best practice in ethical research conduct with Indigenous communities, teaching innovation and practical outcomes in response to local needs. The seminar concludes by explaining that the process of making, rather than the final built outcome is what matters most in remote building, and that in these contexts a single project has the ability to catalyse further local socio-ecological development.

21.01.2022 It’s busy here at Olkola, we have our Land and Sea Rangers on country putting our fire program into action. On ground burning and helicopter, boundary burns such an amazing sight to see. Fencing and more fencing, getting our horse paddocks ready for Tours next year and more fencing on OUR parks. We also have our Cultural camp in Cairns as part of our Cape To Cairns program and we are very excited to have Elliot Koonutta coming down from Pormpuraaw to teach painting, dance and... art before he heads off to CIAF 2019, Jack and Mike will be there to tell the stories of our country and culture. Tish, Betty and Joanne are going to be kept busy with all the kids. Journey to Olkola Country has been booked out and starts in a few weeks, so we get to use our great new kitchen. Our Solar system for Killarney station will be installed in the next month making us even more environmentally friendly., Mike and the boys will kick off mustering in the next few months and we all know how much they love that. In the office, we are busy catching up on all our end of financial year reports and making plans for next year.
