21.01.2022 As the Church year comes to an end, we gathered in a spirit of quiet contemplation at Mount Carmel Coorparoo to pray, guided by chants from Taize. We gathered as community around the cross and table of Eucharist. These are our sure ways of knowing that God shares intimately in our suffering and pain in these extraordinary times. Jesus walks this way, befriending us in the Spirit. May the peace and quiet confidence of hope be renewed in our hearts.

21.01.2022 Brothers Albino Dos Santos, Marcolino Gomes and Matthew Tonini made their Solemn Profession (life-long commitment) as Carmelites on 16 July during Mass in the C...ommunity Chapel at Middle Park (VIC). Due to Coronavirus restrictions we were unable to have a larger, public celebration of this significant milestone for these brothers. Fr Paul Cahill was the celebrant and Brs Jos Freitas and Anacleto Guterres Da Costa provided the music. The readings were read by Marcolino and Albino and Matthew sang the psalm. During his homily Fr Paul reflected on the significance of the little cloud of hope mentioned in the first reading from the Book of Kings. During these times when we are confronted with and surrounded by so much darkness, we like Elijah, look for those things which will sustain us. We draw our hope from Elijah the prophet, and Mary our sister, who sustain us in our following of Jesus Christ as Carmelites and as we seek to be of service to the people of the world. Congratulations Albino, Marco and Matthew!

19.01.2022 Postponed Community Gathering on Sunday 2nd August 2020. Given the unfolding COVID concerns in Brisbane and interstate the decision has been taken to postpone our gathering this Sunday afternoon until a later date. The purpose was to bring our community together, especially those who have been restricted by the current times, but now is not the time to do so. We hope that this will be possible at a later and safer time.

18.01.2022 YOURE INVITED TO JOIN IN PRAYER for the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic. Shalom Media is a catholic ministry that works with the church to evangelize those who do not know Christ and strengthen those who are in Christ through all means of media. In the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic, Shalom ministry has taken an initiative to do the Daniel fasting prayer to implore the Lord Almighty. ... Daniel Fasting 21 days spiritual journey with prayers and sacrifices - is the deliberate and intentional dedication to focus on God and humbling oneself in the presence of almighty God. We do this with the same fervour and urgency shown by prophet Daniel for his people and nation. Expecting a great manifestation of Gods power upon the current pandemic, we lift our hands and hearts to the Lord for supernatural breakthroughs in our lives and in the world. I ate no savoury food, took no meat or wine, and did not anoint myself at all until the end of the three weeks (Daniel 10:3) Fr. Roy Varghese Palatty CMI (Spiritual Director, Shalom Media) will be leading this initiative. Registration for this event is free. For more details about Daniel Fasting Prayer, please visit our website link below. http://www.shalommedia.org/danielfasting Participants are requested to join a whatsapp group to receive regular updates regarding Daniel Fasting by clicking on the link below. https://chat.whatsapp.com/JETsqiPl8gsLAsy2Mk8O0q

09.01.2022 Dialogue and Discernment Session In last weeks newsletter Fr Wayne invited us all to participate in discernment and dialogue on future directions for our parish community beyond the COVID-19 restrictions. When we last met, the Parish Advisory Council grappled with the question which on the surface appears simple Where to from here? In doing so, the Council soon realised that the scope and complexity of the question requires the wisdom of all in formulating answers. To this ...end we invite you to participate by: Attending a dialogue and discernment session in the Mt Carmel School Hall on Sunday 19 July from 10am to 12noon. (Current Stage 3 advice allows gatherings of up to 100 from 10 July.) Registration is required. Please do so at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/dialogue-and-discernment-se (or contact the parish office) or Submitting your thoughts by email to [email protected] with the subject line Where to from here, or Writing to the parish office with your thoughts: Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish Office 312 Cavendish Road Coorparoo, QLD 4151 The Parish Advisory Council looks forward to engaging with you as we discern: Where to from here as the Mt Carmel parish community? 09.01.2022 Today, July 16, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our lady of Mount Carmel. From the earliest days of the Orders beginnings, Mary has held a special place in the l...ives of Carmelites. Mary embodies everything that we hope for - to enter into an intimate relationship with Christ, being totally open to Gods will and having our lives transformed by the Word of God. Like Mary, we too want to listen so deeply to the Word of God that he becomes flesh in us. Happy feast day to all members of our Carmelite Family!

09.01.2022 The Carmelites of Australia and East Timor are mourning the loss today of Fr Ken Petersen who died peacefully in the early hours of this morning. Fr Ken was 81 ...and had been a Carmelite for 58 years and a priest for almost 52. Ken served the Province and the People of God in the parishes of Coorparoo (QLD), Hilton (WA) and Middle Park (VIC), in formation ministry and as Prior Provincial before establishing the Sancta Sophia Meditation Community at Warburton (VIC) with Sr Kathleen Murphy OP in 1996. Sancta Sophia Meditation Community was founded to promote Inter Religious Dialogue, social justice and human dignity through the practice and teaching of meditation, days of prayer, retreats and spiritual counselling. Fr Ken died in the same peaceful manner as he had lived his last days, completing a life dedicated to peace and justice. Throughout his life, Ken both rejoiced in and generously shared his experience of Gods spirit at work in his own life and helped others recognize it at work in theirs and others. We commend him to the God of mercy, love and peace. May Ken now flourish in the eternal embrace of Gods love, Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial). Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised.

07.01.2022 Timor-Leste Floods Emergency Appeal With homes washed away, roads and infrastructure damaged, and thousands now homeless, the people of Timor-Leste need your he...lp. Please Donate at: https://timor-floods-emergency-appeal.raisely.com/ Many of our neighbours and people in Hera have suffered great damage; some lost their whole houses, others all their belongings. Many have no food or water to drink and only the clothes they are wearing. Many of the children who participate in our Carmelite youth group have lost all their belongings including their house, school items and of course have no useable food. The past few days we have been going out and helping with some rice, noodles etc; Today we will do so again and help to clean as some are waist deep in mud and rebuild broken houses. In Dili it has been worse; rivers flooded and houses washed away. The COVID virus has been increasing daily but because of the floods, social distancing is impossible as many people have moved into schools and convents together. We are in our second month of lockdown. However, the damage from the floods is a more urgent problem as many places have no electricity, water, toilets and no food; and many people have little money as many have had no work for six weeks or so. - Fr Bruce Clark O.Carm ... In Tasitolu, a suburb in the west of the capital, Dili, Batista Elo balances his young daughter on his hip as he stands in flood waters that reach up his thighs. I saved my family first and after that just got into the belongings, but there were some things that didn’t get saved, recalls Batista of the wild Saturday night when his home was suddenly flooded. Now I have no place to live. I am staying temporarily at my brother’s house, he said.
