25.01.2022 Happy New Year’s Day! 1 January is the solemnity of Mary, the Theotokos (the Mother of God). https://stpaulcenter.com/why-do-we-call-mary-the-mother-of/ While much of the world marks the new beginning of the calendar year, the Church commemorates the great solemnity of the Mother of God. For centuries, Mary has been praised because she believed. She is Mother of God because of her faith in God. ... The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, not only celebrates Mary’s faith and trust in God but it also highlights the pivotal truth of the Church’s faith- that God has, in Jesus Christ, accepted a human nature and lived a real human life. To testify that the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of God is simultaneously a statement about her and a statement about Christ. On the one hand, it highlights the identity and mission of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an identity and mission that is absolutely singular and unique. On the other hand, Mary, being referred to as the Mother of God, tells us that Jesus Christ is God and was always God. Though New Year’s Day may seem more like a day for hangovers than for Mary, there’s a beautiful spiritual significance in celebrating her during the heart of the Christmas season. Pope Paul VI, in his apostolic exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974), called the Solemnity of Mary a fitting occasion for renewing adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels (Luke 2:14), and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace. 22.01.2022 This year we invite you to take part in an old tradition of chalking the door to celebrate the Epiphany, the day that marks the arrival of the magi, to the place where Jesus was born! Chalking the door is a sign and symbol of asking God’s blessing upon those who live, work, or visit throughout the coming year. In Exodus, the Israelites marked their doors with blood so that the Lord would pass over their homes; but in similar manner, we mark our doors with chalk as a sign... that we have invited God’s presence and blessing into our homes. St Michael's and St Monica's Churches will have Home Blessing Kits for you to take and bless your homes - available at the entry of the Church. Blessed Chalk and Instructions are included. Examples of how to chalk your home are below.
