24.01.2022 In this time of uncertainty, we encourage you to consider this perspective- One of the brand new terms that has entered our daily conversation is social dista...ncing. It is shorthand, as we know very well, for the practical physical precautions that we all need to and must take in order to protect ourselves and others. Id humbly suggest though, that we use the term itself sparingly, if at all. Language is a powerful shaper of thinking. And the very last thing we need right now, is a mindset of mutual distancing. We actually need to be thinking the exact opposite way. Every hand that we dont shake must become a phone call that we place. Ever embrace that we avoid must become a verbal expression of warmth and concern. Every inch and every foot that we physically place between ourselves and another, must become a thought as to how we might be of help to one another, should the need arise. It is obvious that distancing, if misplaced or misunderstood, will take its toll not only on our communitys strength and resiliency, but upon the very integrity and meaning of our spiritual commitment. -Rabbi Yosef Kanesky See more

15.01.2022 Chapter two of Fratelli Tutti (On Fraternity and Social Friendship) begins with the Parable of the Good Samaritan and how Jesus tells the parable in response to... an age-old problem: ‘who is my neighbour’. ‘In earlier Jewish traditions’ this was ‘limited to relationships between members of the same nation’ (para 59). However there is also a theme running through the Old Testament to ‘embrace everyone on the basis of our shared humanity’ (para 60), for the Jewish people ‘had once lived as foreigners in Egypt’ (para 61). When St Paul is writing to the earliest Christian communities, he is concerned that they not ‘form closed and isolated groups’ (para 62). Paul ‘urged his disciples to abound in love for one another and for all (1 Thessalonians 3:12)’ (para 62). For Pope Francis, the key point in the story is that ‘love does not care if a brother or sister in need comes from one place or another’ (para 62). The reason he devotes an entire chapter to this parable is because it ‘summons us to rediscover our vocation as citizens of our respective nations and of the entire world’ (para 66). This is not some vague theoretical issue or obtuse theological concern: ‘Sooner or later, we will all encounter a person who is suffering’ (para 69). Pope Francis writes that ‘there are only two kinds of people: those who care for someone who is hurting and those who pass by; those who bend down to help and those who look the other way and hurry off’ (para 70). Today there are many ways we can ‘pass by at a safe distance: we can retreat inwards, ignore others, or be indifferent to their plight’ (para 73). And simply being religious (the priest and the Levite) is no guarantee that ‘we are actually living in a way pleasing to God’ (para 74). The ‘injured man’ is one person, one individual, but he also represents whole communities, nations or even continents where people have been oppressed and ignored. Pope Francis asks us to be neighbours sisters and brothers to all, without borders. He draws a direct link between the Parable of the Good Samaritan and Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount: ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’ (Matthew 25:35). Pope Francis implores us to see the parable as a mirror for today’s world. In the place of the priest and the Levite there are some religious people today who ‘feel encouraged or at least permitted by their faith to support varieties of narrow and violent nationalism, xenophobia and contempt, and even the mistreatment of those who are different’ (para 86). We'll break open chapter 3 next week but if you want to read ahead, view the full encyclical here: https://bit.ly/2HedZS8.

14.01.2022 How do you grieve? How much have you grieved in your life? Needless to mention how much grieving 2020 is causing in the whole world. We are invited to letting g...o - grieve - our plans and live in the present. One of the greatest Jewish King called Solomon said it is through a sad countenance that the heart is made stronger. Several centuries later, Nietzsche said: what doesn’t kill me, it makes me stronger. I actually believe that Nietzsche was inspired by Solomon. Grieving properly is the way to grow and learn about its own authenticity. It awakes you to your True Voice. What are your experiences in grieving? How much have you learned from your own sadness? And now Wm Paul Young autho...r of the The Shack by Wm Paul Young has added his voice. Paul is a friend of the men on Unit 2 (death row) and has been to visit them many times. He has seen first hand the power of God at work in their lives... and we all know that proximity means everything. Please join us by respectfully asking Gov. Lee to visit the men on Unit 2 at Riverbend prison. Here's the number for the Governor's office: 615-741-2001. "When I was in prison, you visited me." -Jesus (Matthew 25)

12.01.2022 A picture that speaks 1000 words. We only know what we know and until we learn other ways to deal with our anger we will continue doing as we always have. That...’s why we teach anger management and self regulation skills in our Basic Life Skills course. Often seeing a psychologist and unpacking your childhood can help with passing on generational trauma. Learning new skills or taking a parenting course can help with learning about what do to and only then you can break the cycle. Instead of holding onto anger about what’s happened, do better, break the cycle, be the change. See more

In Iluman we come along side other men and as we tell our stories, do our work, listen to one another, learn how to be together in positive ways, we experience a shift in how we see ourselves and the world. It's a beautiful thing to see and experience. Come join us brother......... we are holding your place in the circle. :)

Center for Action and Contemplation faculty member James Finley invites us i...nto a mystical exploration of faith amid the hardship caused by the COVID-19 crisis. He says we must touch this suffering with love to dissolve it, and only then will we know the deep peace of God that depends on nothing but upon which everything depends. See more

01.01.2022 This beautiful girl purposefully swam over to me and started preening while I spoke with her. She appears to have taken up residence very close to the path in A...bdijvanpark, and frequents the narrow strip of water under the overhanging branches, in front of the reeds. About a month ago she was found cowering under tree branches really wedged in and submissive, after being viciously chased by two Black Swans (introduced from Australia?) Maybe she needed to confide in and get comfortable with someone with an Aussie accent? #abdijvanpark #leuven #belgium #heverlee #swan
