24.01.2022 Year 12 student Jacinta, has spent the last 6 months in the company of some extremely talented high school performers from across the state as part of the 2020 Class of Cabaret program. Jacinta was fortunate to be mentored by Cabaret entertainers Amelia Ryan and Michael Griffiths and Jacinta describes the experience as one of the most valuable that she has ever had. Throughout the program, students learnt the art of Cabaret and created and performed a set piece as part of the... Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Despite taking a different form from past years due to COVID 19, the process changed in to a mix of face to face and online learning with the final product being filmed in a closed set within the Festival Theatre. Jacinta says I would encourage any budding performers to apply for this program as it was an experience I will never forget. It increased my confidence, resilience and musical abilities. We congratulate Jacinta on this outstanding achievement! Adelaide Festival Centre's Centr ED See more

24.01.2022 <3 MONDAY MINGLE <3 This initiative began as an opportunity for International Students to gather and engage in conversation over an informal lunch and enjoy a fun, shared experience alongside their fellow OLSH students. The main aims of the Monday Mingle is to provide opportunities for International Students to practice their language skills through fun conversation, build confidence in their own communication skills, develop social connections with other students, and support those who may feel withdrawn or unsure in an unfamiliar context. It also provides an opportunity for local OLSH students to display and model warmth, kindness, resilience and leadership qualities in supporting our international students. Our OLSH girls are emotionally intelligent heart people who have been at the core of making these sessions a success. <3

23.01.2022 This week we held two important transition events for our 2021 OLSHies and their families. On Sunday afternoon we held our 2021 Family Orientation afternoon where families received important information about starting school next year, while also meeting other families who will share the OLSH high school journey. On Wednesday morning we welcomed the 2021 students back to the College for a range of activities and classes to help students feel more comfortable and also provide another opportunity to make new friends. It was so nice seeing all the girls smiling and laughing with each other throughout both days and we cannot wait to see the girls for their first day in 2021! <3

23.01.2022 In Science this week our Year 8 students enjoyed observing, taking photos and holding baby chickens for their biology assignment. Over the next week, girls will have the opportunity to observe chickens hatching either in person or via our online webcam. This Year 8 biology assignment allows girls to learn about the hierarchal structure of an organism and the hatching process.

21.01.2022 Over the past week our co-curricular Futsal and Soccer teams have taken part in two exciting and competitive sporting carnivals. Students from Years 10 - 12 attended the 2020 Open Girls Futsal State Sports Competition at MARS stadium. The girls played well in a very tough competition. Unfortunately the girls didnt manage a win but we are incredibly proud of the way they handled the games and showed true sportswomanship throughout the competition. OLSH students in Years 8 and 9 also participated in the North East Vista Zone Girls 5-a-side Soccer Carnival at Para Hills High School. The students represented the College proudly, never giving up, rotating on and off the pitch regularly and remaining focused all day. The girls finished in 4th place with 5 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses. We wish the girls all the best in the finals!

21.01.2022 We wish to congratulate Year 12 student Kirilly, who upon completing her Year 12 studies later this year, will embark upon an exciting employment opportunity at Raptor Domain on Kangaroo Island! This achievement has been the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication on Kirillys behalf. Kirillys career pathway commenced in Year 10 when she secured work experience at Gorge Wildlife Park. That same year Kirilly also volunteered at a pet store and participated in w...orkshops with Fauna Rescue. In addition to her studies at OLSH, Kirilly also completed a Certificate I Animal Studies at TAFE. In Year 11 Kirilly enrolled in Certificate II Animal Studies at TAFE. Kirilly also secured a highly competitive placement at Raptor Domain on Kangaroo Island. In 2019 Kirilly participated in a year- long exchange to Germany where she attended school and also volunteered at an animal shelter and veterinary clinic. These opportunities affirmed Kirillys conviction to pursue a career in conservation rather than with domestic animals, as she felt a greater inclination towards the natural world. Upon returning to Australia in 2020, Kirilly commenced Year 12 and enrolled in Certificate III Animal Studies. Recently, Kirilly returned to Raptor Domain on Kangaroo Island to complete her two-week placement and after learning about an upcoming job opportunity, Kirrily approached the owners and expressed interest in working there. All of her hard work and dedication was recognised and Kirilly was offered her dream job commencing in November upon completion of her Year 12 studies. She has no doubt that her learning journey will continue, and she hopes to gain an apprenticeship in the future. We commend Kirillys unwavering dedication and passion to her chosen career pathway and wish her every success for an exciting and well deserved future! See more

19.01.2022 The Year 9 Visual Arts - Art students have been learning about the art form of painting, genres in art and the various approaches and styles used by artists who work with painting media. The girls studied the atmospheric qualities of Clouds and explored the use of both traditional and contemporary approaches. The students spent a lesson working En Plein Air a traditional French style of painting and drawing outdoors, directly from nature, first used by the French Impressionists in the late 1800’s. The students, however, were asked to use their laptops as their canvas and their stylus pen or finger as their paintbrush. They persisted in their endeavours and created some beautifully rendered digital paintings.

The aim of the camp was to develop the students planning, practical skills, risk management, self-reliance, leadership and facilitation skills all through the sport of surfing. The girls had beautiful weather and the surf conditions improved more and more each day. The students learned about water safety and wave conditions as well as how to choose the right waves to surf. Initially, there were many wipeouts but with some extra coaching and determination, the students eventually managed to catch waves and stand up. Well done girls!

It inspires our girls to embrace opportunities, aim high, and understand the importance of establishing a professional network. We were blessed to have such wonderful mentors, school staff and students supporting the Mentors’ Breakfast. 16.01.2022 Our Year 7 students are currently undertaking their Coding unit, where they have the choice to code sphero robots to travel through a maze that they have designed and created; or they can design a series of dance movements and code a character of their choice to complete these movements! It has been exciting to see their different approaches to using STEM to explore and problem-solve throughout the project. The girls will then complete the final part of the design cycle, where they evaluate both the design process and the outcome of their coding. We can’t wait to see the final products

14.01.2022 In week 6 the Year 11/12 Drama class will present their drama production of Desiree Din and the Red Forest. While the performers are working hard to learn lines and perfect their on stage roles, the Year 11 Visual Arts Design class has been designing and making the set for the production. Desiree Din is an eight year old girl who enters a red forest. The design brief involved thinking like an eight year old to create the red forest from found objects. Certain objects are ...included in the trees to reference characters in the story. The Year 11 Visual Arts design class is using this experience to learn how to interpret a script and directors intention to create work for a performance space while considering the safety of everyone on stage. This work, which fulfils the Visual Study component of their course, gives the girls first-hand experience so they will have understanding to work on the design of the 2021 musical. An announcement about the choice of musical will be made in the next few weeks. See more

14.01.2022 Making dumplings is a Chinese family tradition passed down through generations, usually made during the Lunar New Year. This week the Year 9 Chinese students practiced this tradition. If you are interested in undertaking SACE Dance in 2021, please contact the College on 8269 8800. Below are some words from two of our external dance students who completed Dance at OLSH in 2020. We thank them for sharing their thoughts and experiences: "As an external student I was nervous about going to a new school to complete SACE Dance. The teachers and students at O...LSH were very welcoming making me feel like I was part of the community. Completing Dance at OLSH has extended me creatively. I have had the opportunity to learn new choreography and styles of dance which has helped to develop my overall skills as a dancer." - Camryn "As an external SACE Dance student at OLSH, I was excited but nervous to be starting a subject at a new school. I was warmly welcomed by all the girls in my class and the teachers which allowed me to feel comfortable. I have loved every moment of learning new dances for the showcase and choreographing new composition pieces for my assessment. Overall this subject has been a very uplifting experience." - Sabrina

Please enjoy these photos showing a snapshot of the production highlighting the impressive performances- both onstage and off.

This particular group of students have been a part of the Primary Connections program since they were Year 3 students so naturally felt a part of the College from the moment they joined us. Much fun was had by all of the students and the interaction between our OLSH ambassadors and the students is always a privilege to witness. In a year that has prevented us from welcoming primary schools as often as we would like, we feel extremely fortunate to have had St Gabriel's students spend the day with us.
