24.01.2022 All parents, carers and younger kids are invited to meet Miss Di for a play in the park this Friday afternoon! Di Dryer has joined OLW this term as our Student Welfare Officer. With Covid restrictions in place, she can't yet offer a program of 'cuppa and chat' catch ups on site, but she'd love to start getting to know families - and helping families get to know each other. Come along to Petrie Place (fenced playground on Young Street, opposite the fire station) between 1.50 a...nd 2.50pm on Friday 31st. BYO coffee, chairs and other needs. In case of rain, the event will be postponed.

24.01.2022 Each year to celebrate a Mary Feast - Feast of the Assumption (15th Aug) we ask each student or family to send in a punnet of flowers to plant out the garden in front of Church. We do this to honour Mary., our patron Saint. We will do this again this Friday. This year we won't ask parents to join us due to COVID-19 restrictions but will do it in groups/classes. It always looks absolutely amazing and students love to be involved. We are hoping we can still get a big response this year. You can send in punnets anytime this week- might serve as a good reminder to others! Thanks in advance!

23.01.2022 A Good Learning conversation you could have Parent: I see you're learning that good learners PARTICIPATE. What is that about? Good learners feel connected to OLW and participate in everything they can! Parent: How are you going with that? ... Good (most kids will say this) Parent: How do you know how you are going 'good'? (if you need to help try this: tell me about the things you participate in) Parent: What can you do to get better at PARTICIPATING? Parent: Who can help you with this? Showing an interest in what your child is learning at school is a great parental engagement strategy. This type of strategy gives your child and 'extra edge' at school in their achievement. These types of conversations are designed to build your childs self-control. The more self-control children practice the better their physical, financial and mental health in their adult life.

23.01.2022 5 minutes a day - Tricks to helping your child achieve better at school in reading, writing and spelling. Working with Rhyme (1). Rhyme is important as it is a way to play with sounds in words, recognise words and patterns when we read or spell. There are different types of rhyme. This week teach your child how to rhyme words that look the same: e.g. mat/cat/rat... Use your childs reader or a story book and ask them what rhymes with (pick a word) Rhyming is something mums, dads and carers can do at home that has a huge effect on your childs achievement with reading at school. Try it this week.

22.01.2022 We know dogs are wonderful companions and members of the family, but please note that they cannot be brought onto school grounds. We have some students who are allergic to dogs, or frightened of dogs. They can also be distracting to children as they move around the school. The only exception, of course, is working assistance dogs who can be approved for entering the grounds. ... Thanks for your help in keeping our school happy and safe.

19.01.2022 A Good Learning conversation you could have Parent: I see you're learning about the 4 Steps this week. What are they? Good learner know what they are learning about; know what to do to be successful, know their next steps; seek, act, receive and give feedback. Parent: How are you going with the 4 Steps? Good (most kids will say this) ... Parent: How do you know how you are going 'good'? (if you need to help try this: tell me about something youre learning about , what do you need to do to be successful?) Parent: What can you do to get better at the 4 Steps? Parent: Who can help you with the 4 steps? Why do this? Research shows that by showing an interest in what your child is learning at school significantly impacts on their achievement at school. This short 5 min conversation takes a while to develop but it is so much better than the "What-did-you-do-today-at-school? --Nothin!" conversation These types of conversations are designed to build your childs self-control. The more self-control children practice the better their physical, financial and mental health in their adult life.
