19.01.2022 DAY 1: World Freerunning Parkour Federation Coaches Course You should be proud. Olympic & The Wilding Project is the only World Freerunnning Parkour Academy (WFPF) in Australia! We think this is a big deal. Just before COVID hit the WFPF coaching team were on their way to Perth to update our staff on the latest syllabus updates ... but ... well you know the rest. ... BUT WAIT. THERE IS GOOD NEWS! First, we’re working hard with the WFPF team to bring a streaming coaching service to our staff and the wider community in 2021. If international COVID restrictions continue this will be essential to our ongoing coach training and a very useful resource for the promotion of parkour in the community. AND This weekend I got a chance to attend the Level 1 & 2 Coaching Course that was coming to Perth before COVID. The location is the picturesque town of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The venue is Kelowna Gymnasticx & Ninja Fitness Academy, also a WFPF Parkour Academy and a member of the global WFPF community. I had to pass a couple of snow capped mountain passes to get here which was pretty exciting. Here’s a scoop on some of the action from Day 1. 12 enthusiastic parkour coaches and practicioners from all over British Columbia, Canada (and one from Australia!!!!) worked hard, made friends and refined our coaching skills. My old legs are sore and it’s 10PM over here. Time for rest. I’ll be sending my notes to the coaching crew at Olympic & TWP. Damien Norris Olympic & The Wilding Project

15.01.2022 Day 46 of 365 Days of Handstands SILENT AWARENESS As someone who did not grow up with snow, recent days have been a sensory experience ... Today I stood outside while the snow fell heavily. Quiet. Everything sounded muffled. It was a strange but comfortable feeling. Maybe someone else can explain it to me. But ... ... it made me think about the benefit of still practice. So today: - FS in quiet, closed eyes, meditative contemplating of ONLY what your body feels during your sets. Everything locked on. Your best attention. Focus on steady even breathing. - - WARM UP / WRIST & SHOULDER stretches. - 3x?m at X? height. [If you’ve been dillengent, then a good place to be right now is regular FS at 30sec / if you’re killing it then 3x1min at 9. COMMENT BELOW: How did that feel? 13.01.2022 Vivobarefoot Unbox - Minimal Hiking Boots Greetings from Canada . Recently I’ve been hiking A LOT! Every week in the forested hills and valleys that surround Vancouver. I’ve not worn heeled shoes of any kind since 2016 but when I started hiking a needed a shoe and realised that minimal hiking shoes were really hard to find. ... So I bought typical hiking boots and that turned out to be a really bad idea. So after a long search, I eventually came full circle back to Vivobarefoot and settled on their Scott II Eco boot. They finally arrived so I thought I’d unbox them for you and then report back in a few months time about how they went. For nature trails and parkour practice I wear the Primus Trial FG. They are awesome. Message us if you’re interested in buying any Vivobarefoot shoe for Men, Women or Children, for everyday, active or outdoor wear. We sell Vivos to our members (and the public) at significantly reduced prices. https://youtu.be/9QuwZxTPjuE

10.01.2022 Val Norris-Buffham inducted into Gymnastics Australia's Hall of Fame! At the Gymnastics Australia Annual General Meeting on 25th July 2020, Gymnastics WA Life Member Val Norris-Buffham was inducted into the Gymnastics Australia Hall of Fame. Val is a Roll of Honour Australian Womens Artistic Gymnastics athlete. She won four National All Around titles, dominating the sport for a number of years. She also represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and again at the 19...68 Olympic Games in Mexico. In 1966, Val competed at the 1st World Championships for Women's Gymnastics in Dortmund, Germany. In fact, Val was the only West Australian gymnast to be selected to attend this event. Val continued in the sport after retiring from competing, opening her own gym and contributing as a judge, coach and technical committee member until the end of 2015. Numerous State, National and even Olympic athletes started their career at Vals club. While coaching, Val saw how gymnastics could benefit athletes of all ages and abilities. This experience led Val to create a range of programs that had a foundation in gymnastics but focused on training young people for participation in a wide variety of sports. The students, parents & staff want to collectively thank Val for launching 'Olympic Gymnastics Academy' which has had a positive affect on thousands of young Australians since 1978. 'Olympic' will host a formal presentation in honour of Val when the Hall of Fame award will be mounted in the club foyer. (Details to come) Reference: Gymnastics WA. Aug 13, 2020.

09.01.2022 Day 116 - 125 of 365 Days of Handstands: BUILDING STRENGTH Strength is key now. If you’re going to hold yourself upside down then you need your arms to behave like legs. ... I never said this was going to be easy! Time to work the arms, shoulders and core. All of these aspects of your body need to be strong to sustain a solid handstand. PERFECT: - The ‘ground up’ push up (15-20 every day) - Walk up Bails (or ‘Bunny Hops & Handstand Bails’ from last week) - Dish, arch and side lifts PLUS - Normal 3x1min static FS. Don’t forget to stretch your wrists and warm up before and after your session. - A MAINTENANCE Session: Warm Up Wrist Stretch + Finger Push-Ups Walk Up wall / FS holds 1min x3 - or variations of this ie, 6 x10 seconds walking up the wall or 10sec walk hold + 50 Normal Front Support. ACTIVE REST: while resting from your wall efforts play with FINE TUNING activities (below). These will enhance your chances of success. +PLUS FINE TUNING EXTRAS: The list below are things we’ve practice over the last 95 days. Any of them can be practiced and returned to frequently. If you need help remembering what they are, just ask. Shoulder Stands Roll Left and Right Walk up wall play Elephant Stand &/or Crow Pose Bar hang (SCOOP / ARCH) shapes FS Side to Side Toe Taps Slides on the floor - Always warm up and prepare before your session. Stay within your limits (Don’t rush. Your ‘limits’ get broader). Stretch at the end and treat / look after any pains. If you’re struggling with anything or have questions just ask. - If your’re bang on track then we’ll done. If you’ve missed a few weeks then all is not lost but time is running out. If you’re just watching.

08.01.2022 GOOD FRIENDS MAKE A GREAT TEAM: Daniel and I have known each other since we trained as gymnasts at the WAIS. We were young then. We never imagined that 30yrs later wed be running a club together. ... Yet here we are. Lets just say that when you do what you love and what you love is done with the people you love, its not really work. The inclusion of Dan into the Olympic & The Wilding Project team has allowed the club the freedom and space to innovate beyond its expectations. [Make sure you say "Well Done" to Dan the next time you see him at the club. He's earned it!] --- THIS IS A STORY ABOUT GRATITUDE HIGHLIGHTS 2016 Since 2016, Dan, I and a HUGE bunch of wonderful coaches have built a wonderful non-competitive recreational gymnastics and fitness program for children and young adults. We still have much to do but our passion ensures that what we deliver is great quality and worthy of child participation. 2019 WORLD FREERUNNING PARKOUR FEDERATION In 2019/2020 we traveled the planet for 9 months; researching and learning from some of the most innovative movers on the planet. One fantastic outcome of that extraordinary journey was to bring the World Freerunning Parkour Federation to Australia (WFPF). COVID put a pause on some of the more ambitious elements of the WFPF / The Wilding Project partnership but well be back on track soon. One thing we are SUPER excited about is that our coaches are teaching the WFPF parkour syllabus and were the only club in Australia to be doing so. AN APP RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS & OTHERS During COVID-19 we developed an APP which will launch in a few months time. The APP will have a number of member benefits that will contain GYMNASTICS, PARKOUR and ADULT fitness activities that we KNOW you will love. 2020 The club heads to CANADA! Why? To pursue one of our most ambition projects yet: a research project conducted at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. This PhD research project will span 5yrs and the hope is that at the end of all of our effort we will have made one the most innovative and useful pieces of movement literature on the planet! You heard it FIRST! More on this later. --- SO ... GRATITUDE Gratitude for a business colleague who does an extraordinary job running the club. Thank you Dan! Gratitude to our MEMBERS, some of whom are the 3rd generation of students at the club! Without you ALL we would not be who we are. Gratitude for the opportunity to dedicate our time and energy into developing the best child-adult physical fitness options available. --- We sincerely hope that you are all enjoying the unique compliment of training and skill development we provide at Olympic & The Wilding Project. It's already good AND ... Better is coming!

05.01.2022 PRACTICE TIP: Find the skills within the skill Fresh from the WFPF coaches course I set about visiting some of my local spots and practicing some skills. When you practice it is super important to take one skill and break it down into smaller parts. In this video I’m working on a Wall Climb and I decided to focus on the ‘pop-up’ that happens within that skill. So I took that one part, the pop up, and drilled it.... The next time I do Wall Climbs I’ll focus on a different smaller skill. There a lot! When you train like this you will notice improvements in your overall performance of parkour skills. Especially your flow and efficiency. GOOD LUCK! SOME TIPS (NOT ALL!) Whenever you are practicing parkour in public spaces there is a lot to think about. Some important ones are: 1. Always be respectful (move on if you are asked or talk about how you can stay if the opportunity arises.) 2. Always check your surfaces (not everything that looks solid is solid!) 3. Always tidy up (even if the mess is not yours. The locals will love you.) 3. Never trespass or intentionally damage property.
05.01.2022 DAY 3: World Freerunning Parkour Federation Coaches Course. It is coaching courses like this one that demystifies the sport of parkour. Parkour is the REAL DEAL. It is a sporting discipline. I very tough one. It is a craft. There is a lot of technique and it takes time to perfect. But most importantly, it is insanely rewarding and a lot of FUN!... Today was all about coach assessment, lesson planning and practical exams so most of this footage comes from Day 2. Our bodies were a little stiff and sore from two intense days of parkour training and practice. It did not help that the temperature dropped to -5 overnight and sat around 0 for most of the day. The coaching course as a whole was fantastic. Packed with useful information and attended by genuinely lovely people. People interested in learning, sharing and being better coaches and parkour practicioners. I’m done. I passed. And I managed to learn a wall-run back tuck!!! Woohooo. On reflection I am sad that COVID prevented our club from having the WFPF team visit our club in April 2020, but as I mentioned in the Day 1 post, we’re working on a alternative solution in 2021. That said, finally getting to the Level 1 & 2 coaches course confirmed (for me) that turning The Wilding Project into a WFPF Parkour Academy was a very VERY good idea. Thanks for watching and I hope you’re all safe and well. From Canada, Damien

04.01.2022 This is ART. Coach Ky created an incredible Parkour video in nature, and explains his thoughts. "Extended periods of time spent in the city - in the labyrinth of human society - will leave you feeling increasingly dazed & confused. We pretend to care about things we detest, we worship useless material, and we trade our souls for routine and security. It seems we have forgotten that it’s all a game, that the man-made world is exactly that: made. The human world is an anomaly. ...A delicate bubble we huddle within that has only existed for a fraction of Earth’s history. It’s fleeting, illusory & not real. Spending time in nature, The Real World, reminds us of what matters. The amnesia wears off and we remember that this story isn’t about us, that the Earth is much more beautiful and sacred than we often perceive it to be, and that it’s pointless to spend our brief time here worrying about the trivialities of the human world." - Ky Williams. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhMXfmYar-E
