12.01.2022 KINESIOLOGY is a discipline that includes three primary fields of study: Anatomy. Physiology (particularly neuromuscular physiology). ... Biomechanics. Anatomy is the science of the structure of the human body. The study of anatomy teaches what tissues are where, a fairly basic requirement for health care providers seeking to treat the tissues of the human body. In addition, a solid foundation in anatomy informs the practitioner as to where the tissues are located in relation to each other. In many cases knowing where a structure is located gives important clues as to its key roles, including how it operates when healthy or how it is impaired in dysfunction. The study of anatomy is also crucial for assessment, because in many instances it is necessary to identify the structure(s) that might be the source of pain. Unless the structures are known, it will be very difficult to determine accurately what needs treatment and how it should be treated. Physiology is the study of function. The integrated actions of the muscular and neurologic systems, neuromuscular physiology, are the key to movement of the human body. Familiarity with neuromuscular physiology will help the practitioner to fully understand movement and how tissues function in health and disease. When the practitioner approaches any kind of advanced treatment, one of the first steps is the assessment and evaluation process. The third component of kinesiology, biomechanics, is perhaps one of the most misunderstood and understudied concepts in the massage profession. Biomechanics is the application of mechanical physics to organic systems. In massage therapy, the study of biomechanics involves applying the principles of physics to the locomotor tissues engaged in movement. Of most importance is understanding how different forces are generated or absorbed by the body and the role played by those forces in the development of various injury conditions.
