09.01.2022 Existing JobKeeper changes legislated, it may benefit more people such as people employed after 1 March 2020.

06.01.2022 The ATO has now announced a number of deduction hotspots that it will pay close attention to this year, in light of COVID-19. The Tax Office has begun bracing for a substantially different tax time this year, noting that it will likely see a flow-on effect from COVID-19 restrictions on work-related expenses claims. ATO Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat, has urged taxpayers to reduce claims for work-related expenses in the last quarter of the 201920 year, that would have be...en impacted by government-mandated restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19. 06.01.2022 Taxpayers are requested to hold off lodging their tax returns for at least a few weeks as COVID-19 throws up new variables this tax time. Individual taxpayers are expected to rush in to lodge their returns early this year as they look to secure refunds, as well as the up to $1,080 Low and Middle Income Tax Offset (LMITO). A range of COVID-19-related payments including JobKeeper, JobSeeker and the cash-flow boost will come into play this tax time, alongside other pandemic-re...lated variables that are set to impact claims. Our strong message is to wait for the information to become available, before you lodge; otherwise, you may end up with an unexpected tax bill and angst down the track. Discrepancies will create reverse workflow and expose taxpayers to interest and/or penalties, says Mr Conway, Chief Executive of the Institute of Public Accountants. 04.01.2022 While ATO audit activity is significantly down on previous years due to COVID-19, JobKeeper reviews have continued to feature over the last few months as the Tax Office looks to weed out fraudulent arrangements. The Tax Office will be looking for validation on statements such as employee details, and bank statements, records of payslips, employee JobKeeper nomination forms, employment declaration forms, and contracts of employment etc. BASs that had been previously been sub...mitted with no wages or sales on them (and now have been changed to include these), will be flagged - such JobKeeper reviews have seen the ATO place 24,000 businesses in suppression where these applications have been held up until further eligibility proof is provided by the applicant. The ATO is so data-rich. For employer obligations and JobKeeper issues, the obvious is that it doesn’t pay to try and engineer a position. My advice is that it’s just not worth it, says Accountancy Insurance director, Roman Kaczynski.
