25.01.2022 We are saddened at the announcement of the suspension of the snow season at our neighbouring Alpine Resorts. In light of this announcement, Alpine Shire Council... would like to reassure our visitors that Dinner Plain remains open and will continue to operate for visitors who are still able to travel. The Toboggan slope will continue its operation unchanged for the rest of the school holidays, as will the Hotham Shuttle Bus on its low season schedule. For next week and beyond, we plan to offer a memorable winter experience for our regular guests and those who have never experienced the snow before. We will provide further update in the coming days to how this looks.

Maximum 5 tours per night re restrictions. First tour starts 4.30 and we will pickup in 10 minute increments for more than one tour. 23.01.2022 Big news day, huh? Hello friends. We just want to let everyone know that whatever comes, we are STAYING OPEN. Were here, and we are always committed to serving... our community. The lifts may have stopped turning, but were still situated in a beautiful part of the world. The snows still going to fall, right?! Our opening hours will remain unchanged. Our food service hours will remain unchanged - were open for breakfast from 8:30am, lunch from 11am, snacks from 3pm-5pm and dinner from 5:30pm. We might be a little quieter round the traps soon, but booking is still a good idea. Were here for everyone wholl still be up here, and for everyone who wants to come to visit. Come and see us. We might even get the fire going out the back... We march on.

05.01.2022 GREAT ALPINE ROAD - SWIFTS CREEK Police on the scene of a truck roll over on the Great Alpine Road at Ensay North advise that the Great Alpine Road will remain ...closed until approximately 6pm this evening. (Thursday 9/7) This is due to heavy haulage recovery. If possible, please avoid travelling along the Great Alpine Road north of Bruthen and south of Swifts Creek. The road is closed to traffic both directions between Doctors Flat and Ensay.

Gippsland is full of wonderful tourism businesses and some of the best natural wonders in Australia and its our job to make people aware of that. At the time of writing this, there is nothing stopping local travel and we want to encourage that - what better way to spend your weekends than exploring your own backyard. So we are going to start posting ours and your favourite Gippsland destinations again. We are not encouraging travel from restricted areas and we want everyone to travel safely, mindful that our small towns need to keep safe. 02.01.2022 OMEO CENTENARY - 1935 Festivities for Two Weeks .. Dauntless Early Pioneers ..... Commencing on January 12 1935, residents of Omeo and district, will engage in a fortnight of festivities to commemorate the attainment o 100 years of inland settlement, says the"Argus." Closely linked with the centenary will be the names of John and James Pendergast, Angus McMillan, McFarlane, and Strzlecki men who penetrated the wilderness in 1835-36 in search of adventure. Of these the most revered are the Pendergast brothers, who succeeded in establishing a station homestead at Mount Leinster, on Omeo Plains, and gradually by dogged perseverance, undaunted courage, and tact, established a settlement that has grown over the years. Part of the old homestead stands today, and branches of this famous family are scattered over Omeo Plains, where they carry out grazing pursuits. From the settlement of the district until the gold rush, there appear to be no historical records, probably because the bushmen of the time chose to Keep their activities secret and spy out the land for themselves. Among outstanding figures of the 1870s were Fitzgerald Brothers, Sheean, Higgins, Murphy, Brown and Wells, the last named two being the first to cross Mount Feathertop and Mount Hotham. They named Flour bag, Sugar Mat, Jim hud and Jacks Creek, well known oh the great Alpine Highway today. With the growth of alluvial mining the township of Omeo flourished, there being a score of business houses and seven hotels, which supplied the miners with necessaries from 1805 onward. Bullock wagons traversed the mountains from Welshpool, taking three weeks on the journey, often more. Teams were often bogged to the axles on Fainting Range and Mountain Ash, but such occurrences were treated lightly. As the roads were improved horse teams were employed. In 1870 there were about 600 miners on the field at Omeo alone, and as fresh fields were discovered Chinese arrived, until in 1875 mining was being actively carried out over an area of many square miles. A few years later quartz gold was found, and Glen I Wills and Sunnyside were established. Companies sprang up like mushrooms, and much money was wasted , but in 1892 these two settlements were well established. In addition tin mining was carried on, but it proved a failure. Twenty five years on alluvial mining waned and quartz gold was not payable, and the once flourishing settlements were gradually vacated. Many men remained on the land and established themselves as graziers, the sale and breeding of Hereford cattle proving much more profitable than gold mining. This stabilised the district and carried it through trying times, and in place of the shacks that were tenanted by miners good dwellings were erected. In 1892 the post office, courthouse & Commercial Bank, all splendid edifices, were erected. The population has remained about 6.000 for the shire, and farming and grazing have spread with marked success. Splendid highways lead Into the district and gave access to the wonderful Alps country of Tallangatta and Corryong, and there is an air of prosperity among the mountain community. To commemorate the centenary a committee had been actively at work for 12 months, and a round of festivities. Including picnics, sports, and recitals, has been arranged. Members of the Country Womens Association had given their co-operation and arranged for the erection of a fine fountain at tho Civic Square in Day Avenue and the planting of a large avenue of trees at Swifts Creek. The decoration of the town was on a lavish scale. Old residents had given a cot in perpetuity at the Omeo District Hospital to mark the occasion, and on January 12 a great welcome gathering was the fore-runner of festivities which concluded on January 21.
