25.01.2022 After 98 days of fire activity, we can now give you the good news that all of the fires in East Gippsland are now fully contained! Lightning strikes started fir...es in East Gippsland on 21 November with further lightning and spot fires then starting fires in the Snowy region on 25 November resulting in around 1.2 million hectares of burnt land. Today, the Orbost Incident Control Centre declared that fires in far East Gippsland are now contained and this news follows on from other areas that have declared their fires contained over the past couple of weeks. At the height of the fires, more than 110 people were working in the Orbost Incident Management Team, supporting and coordinating approximately 400 firefighters, including contractors and aircraft personnel, from fire and land management agencies, police, local government, defence forces, emergency services, utilities and other support agencies from across Australia, North America and Asia Pacific. Despite, the fires being contained, there is still much work to be done. The fire at Cape Howe Wilderness Zone has a number of hot spots in inaccessible country with smoke remaining visible in nearby towns when the wind is not favourable. Several hotspots are also prevalent near Errinundra Rd and Gap Rd, which are being patrolled and extinguished as they are found, and a newly arrived specialist ‘Hot Shot’ firefighting team from America will be joining existing crews in this area. Hazardous tree clearing and removal is also still continuing and smoke from the Peat Fire in the Cape Conran and Marlo Plains areas will be visible for some weeks. Active patrolling by firefighting crews will continue. As we move from fire threat into recovery, recovery services and support are well underway and are being coordinated through East Gippsland Shire Council and Bushfire Recovery Victoria. 17.01.2022 Our thoughts are with everyone in lockdown at the moment. We’ve been taking stock over the past couple of weeks. We love our region and we want to see it thriv...e. Gippsland is full of wonderful tourism businesses and some of the best natural wonders in Australia and it’s our job to make people aware of that. At the time of writing this, there is nothing stopping local travel and we want to encourage that - what better way to spend your weekends than exploring your own backyard. So we are going to start posting ours and your favourite Gippsland destinations again. We are not encouraging travel from restricted areas and we want everyone to travel safely, mindful that our small towns need to keep safe. And a message to our lovely friends and family in Melbourne, around Victoria, over the state borders and into every country around the world. This will pass, and when it does, know that Gippsland will welcome you back with open arms, with incredible natural experiences, with food and wine that you will rave about and with local personalities that will have you laughing till you hurt or feeling so warm and nurtured, you’ll never want to leave. We hope you’ll all come as soon as it is safe to do so. Till then, we hope you’ll create a special folder where you can save our suggestions and start to build a bucket list of travel ideas. When the time is right, please visit Gippsland, we miss you. Take care everyone! - The Destination Gippsland team. Pic: Wonderful Omeo in Winter Photography by Anne Morley

07.01.2022 Sorry to disappoint our regular visitors but the decision has been made. Due to the unknown length of this Corona Virus isolation. The 2020 Caravan & RV Muster has been CANCELLED. We aim to be back next year bigger & better than ever. Meanwhile, stay healthy & please come back for a visit in 2021.

05.01.2022 We’ve had some rain! 18mm at Golf Club has the creek running again, & it’s still raining

01.01.2022 Well I think we can stop the rain dancing for a while. 47mm so far & a promise of more today, possibly another 20. It’s made a mess in the burnt areas but we’ve survived that before & we will again.
