22.01.2022 Here we have aged care and all that, who take care of old people. So I think that’s the reason that drives me to go back home. Because I don’t want my parents to suffer, and I don’t want other parents like that to suffer the same thing. So at least if I can make a small effort, if we can develop that spirit within a small group of youth of ‘I belong to this country, I belong to this place and I have to be there at least for my parents or my families - I can be there for a sm...all group of my community’, then it will be helpful. In my country I have not been that grateful to people. I have not been that grateful to culture. Coming to Australia has taught me that I should know more about our own cultures that are back home. Thank you Shambhavi Shree C. for sharing your journey in the pursuit of identity with us. 22.01.2022 In Mauritius I would always live up to other people’s expectations, to my parents’, my friends’, you know, you have to eat that way, go to that church or dress in a certain way. But being here I could be whoever I wanted. I finally became a vegetarian, I followed through with my Eastern philosophy and search. Actually my lifestyle now, that I have chosen on my own as a Hare Krishna, has more regulations and rules than it did when I was back home but they are the rules that I... chose, not the ones that I was born with. That’s what I appreciate here, people respect your choices. There’s an ocean between Mauritius and me, I can be who I am. - Gunamani N. 17.01.2022 I was waiting eight years for my husband to come. But he came and after four months he left me. I thought there will be a happy life when he came. But I was heart broken, disappointed. After four months he go away, and then after two years I get divorce paper. For me, I had a lot of challenges, lot of struggle. When I remember the struggle, I remember home and going bushwalking, so I also do that here in Australia. I just go walking. Sometimes I feel I am strong because I ha...ve lot of struggle, and strength from that. If I feeling sad or stressed, I do my weaving or my henna painting. Cup of tea and then after that I relax. - Muhubo S. 13.01.2022 Home is home. Wherever I am is home. I can go into a place with snakes and I know that not one will sting me. No one can throw stones because I become one of them. - Arlene J. Thank you Arlene for sharing your story with us. You can read Arlene's full story here: http://www.ondru.org/projects/spoken... - About #Ondru_Spoken: Diverse groups of people co-exist in Australia but they do not necessarily enjoy a sense of community. There exists a challenge to build a sense of community that opposes racism and xenophobia. Ondru and Space2b Social Design are working together to create an evocative public mural artwork that gives voice to silent and unheard human stories. The focus was on people who had left their countries as a result of internal problems or conflicts to make their life in Australia; people who positively shape our communities. Spoken is kindly funded by City Of Port Phillip Cultural Development Fund. - Photographer: Shane Lam * * * #refugee #tedX #contemporaryart #diversitymatters #lensculture #culturestories #artchangeslives #writersofinstagram #writerscommunity #publicart #melbournecity #artmovement #photojournalism #storiestotell #portraitphotography #photoproject #majestic_people #stories #community #culturalexchange #everybodystreet #togetherwemakeadifference #nonprofit #chapelstreetbalaclava #newmigrants #refugees #community

06.01.2022 The Voiceless Journeys opening night at the Richmond Town Hall was held last night. We’d like to thank Yarra City Council for supporting the exhibition, Deputy Mayor Cr Misha Coleman, as well as Fadak Alfayadh for being an amazing MC for the night. A massive thank you to the wonderful and passionate people who attended and met us last night to celebrate cultural diversity. Quoting Fadak’s powerful statement; our community’s acceptance towards asylum seekers is important, esp...ecially during their transitioning period of settling down. Discrimination towards refugees is not just an issue we are reading through the headlines - it is real, and it is happening to people who have experienced great loss in their lives. It is up to us to create a community that is accepting and tolerant. The Voiceless Journeys exhibition will run until 28 June at the Richmond Town Hall. We’d encourage you to invite your family, friends and colleagues to the exhibition. Let’s together start the difficult conversation with the people around us.
