21.01.2022 One Page Wonder 479 (Female Sport) Somewhere behind the athlete you've become and the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back... play for her.---Mia Hamm This week is the culmination of the Women’s Australian Rules Football season with the AWFL Grand Final in South Australia. There has been so much exposure on the players and an awards night as female sport across the world finally gets r...Continue reading
21.01.2022 One Page Wonder 466 (Retirement) Regret for things we did, can be tempered by time; it is regret for things we did not do that is inconsolable.----Sidney Harris As we move into the year 2021, I am posed with an interesting conundrum, one which has an easy solution. I will enter the year that technically I can retire, only in age, nothing else. So many people I know dream of that day and many do it far earlier. Let me not kid myself, could I handle retiring, not a chance. S...Continue reading
19.01.2022 One Page Wonder 465 (Tenth Year) What's the greater risk? Letting go of what people think - or letting go of how I feel, what I believe, and who I am?---Brene Brown In July 2011, I started on this blogging journey with just 6 stories in mind, with the hope I could get to 50. Now I hope I never stop because there is always something out there that I can write about. I know for a fact if I was to sit down and read all 464 previous ones and the over 50 Half Page Wonders I would ...Continue reading
19.01.2022 One Page Wonder 462 (Make people happy) Don’t treat people poorly because you can. Treat people respectfully and with kindness because you should---Rodney Tattam In late 1983 I moved to New Zealand to pursue a hairdressing dream. I had come direct from Melbourne after completing a ridiculous 14-month crash course to be accredited. To say I was lacking in both skill and confidence was an understatement. In a small country town, I had landed a job with an extraordinary lad...Continue reading
15.01.2022 One Page Wonder 463 (Masterton) The first thing that matters: I am a child of the eighties. I grew up in a neon wonderland of talking horses, compassionate bears, hair that didn't move in a stiff wind, and the constant threat of nuclear war.-----Seanan McGuire In the mid 80’s I moved to a regional town in New Zealand named Masterton. Having come direct from Melbourne I found it difficult to adapt to the slower pace that country towns are renown for. People would stop to talk ...to me, as they do, and I would rush on by as my previous life was at a high tempo. I am sure many simply thought I was plain rude, whereas I hadn’t adjusted to how life should be. Looking back, it was an amazing place to live, and a wonderful time to be in your mid 20’s. Recently I came across a Face Book page called ‘Old Masterton Memories’ and the posts of a bygone era bring back incredible memories, even though for me they are only for 3 years. This page appears to have been started in 2014 however has only recently turned into a crescendo with over 7,000 members now linked. Another page that has caught my attention is ‘We grew up in Australia in the 70’s and 80’s’. This started in June this year and has over 104,000 members and it too posts distant memories. It is quite clear that though these two pages are from different countries they are connected by one key and fundamental ingredient, memories. We have endured the most ridiculous year and those old enough to recall better times can reconnect with things or experiences that made them happy. Someone starts a thread and away it goes like wildfire as seemingly forgotten times return. We will never get back to where we were in eras gone by because we, and the world, have changed in so many ways. However, we can still enjoy what we knew, who we knew and places we went. Imagine being really young right now or even born this year. The world you will get to know will be vastly different, maybe light years apart, from the times that those older had. You know, the era when kids played outside. When you see movies or anything from the 70’s and 80’s, your first thought is how dated they look. In reality, thinking that way is incorrect because what you should be doing is allowing them to transport you back to then. Think of what you wore, what you did, who were your friends and how life was so very different. Most likely it was a time when you were allowed to be irresponsible. That may have been the greatest time of your life because of the freedom it allowed you. In reflection, this ‘Old Masterton Memories’ has allowed me to float back and realise how lucky I got to live there, even if it was only a short time. The New Zealand Tourist Bureau told me that Masterton was just a sheep town. How wrong they were. When I was living there, for me, it was the greatest place on Earth. Connect with memories from your past because in most cases it guarantees you happiness. Have a great week Rodney Tattam 27th December 2020
15.01.2022 One Page Wonder 478 (105) I know what it is like to be brought up with unconditional love. In my life that came from my grandmother.--- Andre Leon Talley On Wednesday, this week my Nan would have been 105. Of course, I made sure I went to the cemetery, placed some lovely flowers, and had a chat, so to speak. It is those moments of quiet solitude in the tranquillity of the environment, that you have time to reflect, to remember and that is far more important than anythin...Continue reading
13.01.2022 One Page Wonder 481 (Dook and I) It only takes one person to mobilize a community and inspire change. Even if you don't feel like you have it in you, it's in you. You have to believe in yourself. People will see your vision and passion and follow you.---Teyonah Parris Being too busy is a crap reason not to do things that you should. It’s a poor excuse though one that I am sure I am not alone is using far too often. The old adage of We’ll must catch up soon is overused an...Continue reading
10.01.2022 One Page Wonder 477 (Jack and Dianne) Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars---Casey Kasem It was the Summer of 1982 when I was cruising down a freeway in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne when I first heard that song. I was hooked by its sing along laid-back style, though at the time never realized that it may be a song about our lives. It spoke of our youthfulness, in the unpredictability and lack of responsibility that only being young offers. Music...Continue reading
10.01.2022 One Page Wonder 464 (The Year of Reconnection) When was the last time you did something for the first timeJohn C Maxwell Well, 2020 is over and what a year. So many changes and new things that we did for the first time. Ask yourself, what did you learn and what did you learn about yourself and those around you. When you look at it with clear eyes and full hearts, were there some positive surprises? I choose to search for things that I simply never saw coming. I think 2...Continue reading
