23.01.2022 This Sam Fischer song is growing on me day by day. I've arranged 3 versions so that beginners can download a chart to play this with easy open chords and a capo on 2, or use one simple barre chord and a capo on 4, or work your way up to the chart of the original version which uses no capo and has all barre chords. Choose the path that suits you best! https://youtu.be/pm5eJstEMmo

22.01.2022 #RIPEVH Thank you so much for all those notes you fired into the mind of a young me. Including all the crazy shit that I could never master. Actually, especially all that crazy shit. You are a monster of guitar and always will be.

21.01.2022 I'm overwhelmed by the response to my last EVH video - thank you! This easy song by Vinnie Virgo uses 4 partial barre chord shapes, so if you are not so hot on barre chords this can be an easy way in for you. The chords are all played on the top 4 strings and it follows a nifty arpeggio/strum pattern that's a little bit motown, and repeats throughout. Please subscribe, and comment on the video to let me know how you are going or if you have any questions - here to help! https://youtu.be/9xZdGHODxtI

21.01.2022 An easier song to start the week, with a jaunty little rhythm. It goes much faster than in this tutorial - but hopefully that will be helpful! With simple open chords C, Em, Am, G, F, and Dm, everyone should be able to play this super-positive-vibe song by Bruno Mars. https://youtu.be/mM8hYRyJ5uE

21.01.2022 Think you know this riff? Then put a little sauce on it, and fatten it out so you can carry the whole darn thing on one guitar and get the room jumping. Or your dog. Or yourself. Or whoever it is you play for. And it's the Stones. So play it loud. https://youtu.be/QMM5Dkaif-M

20.01.2022 Smells Like Teen Spirit. Such a clever song. Such raw power. I can't think of another vocal track in rock music that has the same weight to it. (Can you?) This is an arrangement for acoustic guitar that's a bit different to most. It combines bass and guitar without the melody, like most fingerstyle arrangements of this song do. So it leaves room for the vocals. And it sounds much more difficult than it actually is, which is always nice... If this inspires your fingerstyle skills, there is an additional tab for download which has a fingerstyle arrangement of the guitar solo. It's only slightly more challenging than the first tab. Good luck! And please let me know how you go. I love hearing from all the new subscribers to my channel and I'm grateful for all the support! https://youtu.be/2GBSxUGHZZk

19.01.2022 How time flies. I am honoured to have students stay with me for years, however this means eventually they leave to go to university, or to focus on their HSC (or trials) or other life phases. So for the first time in a number of years I have some places available for guitar or ukulele students in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss lessons for your child (or yourself) either at your home or my home studio in Vaucluse.

19.01.2022 Much has been said about EVH in the last ten days or so. And although I was never a shredder or much of a tapper, Eddie was a big influence on me in the 80s. Upon revisiting their back catalogue, I realised why: he was not just a super shredder, but a masterful riff-maker and rhythm player. So I put this together as a small homage, to the man who has created some of the most recognisable riffs in rock history. Anyone can play these riffs, electric, acoustic, even fingerstyle.... Enjoy. And thank you, Eddie. https://youtu.be/INijmukTD_Y

19.01.2022 One of my all-time favourite songs from an all-time favourite debut album, including a cameo from another all-time favourite artist. I can safely say that Jack Johnson elevated the way I play rhythm guitar, and he brought a new kind of joy to my guitar playing. A warning: once you get into this rhythm, you may be hooked... https://youtu.be/_VBs2R4MAvk

19.01.2022 A combination of major 7 and minor 7 chords in this simple progression sound really nice, and give you some scope to experiment with a groovy strumming pattern which I've broken down and included in the downloadable chart to make it easy. Also included is a slight variation in the minor 7 chords for an added challenge. Intermediate level here, but I do have quite young students playing this song, so don't be afraid! https://youtu.be/v5zj1p4OaOM

18.01.2022 I love a good story in a song! This easy, 4 chord strummer has always been one of my favourite Beatles songs. It uses the easy (but interesting!) open chords Am7, D7, G7, and C, and if you want to get really authentic you can add D7sus4 and C/B to your bag of tricks for this one. A campfire song if ever there was one. Let me know how you go with it! https://youtu.be/dgiVl4wzrdg

16.01.2022 I knew I liked this song even before I heard the collab with Jack Johnson. Such a distinctive little guitar intro. You need some barre chords for this (F#m and C#), unless you want to play the high guitar riff all the way through, which also works! https://youtu.be/O9sMTn4t-uo

16.01.2022 1 easy riff. 1 small variation. 2 easy open chords; A and G. There is no reason not to play this monster song. And if anyone knows the reason why it was adopted as the unofficial Davis Cup anthem, I'd love to hear it. Or was it simply because it's one of the catchiest riffs in guitar history? https://youtu.be/pq7LTCrn96M

16.01.2022 This 5min lesson will give you a fundamental skill that every guitarist should have. And I firmly believe that with good palm muting, almost any piece of music can be adapted for guitar. Plus there are 2 great examples of songs in this lesson to practise your technique with. https://youtu.be/nSxsKHDFtsk

12.01.2022 To all our US friends...

11.01.2022 My first foray into transcribing video game music! My nephew wanted to learn how to play this song, and it's a beautiful piece by composer Dan Romer from Far Cry 5, called Now That This Old World is Ending. It's reasonably challenging, but with a little patience and perseverance you'll be rewarded with a great sounding instrumental piece that many people will think they recognise but not many will be able to name! https://youtu.be/GVIW1-kDvCQ

11.01.2022 You're never too young to start playing like a seasoned pro.

07.01.2022 There is a nifty bass line that goes throughout this song by Khamari that was too good to resist. Three tabs are available for download: one for bass players, one for guitar, and one with a capo on fret 3 for using easy open chords on guitar (C, F, G, Em, E7). https://youtu.be/CjtX2wCTgDI

06.01.2022 With a capo on fret 1, this song uses easy open chords (Am-C-G-Dm-F), and has a really nice sliding guitar riff and guitar solo (included) that gets into your ear and refuses to leave. It's like someone threw Vance Joy, Bon Iver, and Boy and Bear into a blender and made a really catchy smoothie. https://youtu.be/iKCW3cfcpns

06.01.2022 Yeah, I mean he's okay...

06.01.2022 Hawaiian ukulele legend Benny Chong wrote this pretty little waltz for ukulele but it works well with either uke or guitar. It's relatively easy with 2 different but simple picking patterns, some easy chords and a one-finger move up and down the neck! there are video lessons and tabs for both ukulele and guitar versions in the description. Pick your flavour and get a waltz into you this weekend! https://youtu.be/hKJw63dKzWE

03.01.2022 Kiwi singer Gin Wigmore travelled through the southern US before recording this track, and I reckon you can tell. Sounds kinda swampy and spooky and dirty bluesy. Definitely sounds more New Orleans than Dunedin. It has a super-catchy and very easy guitar riff, a little palm muting, and easy open chords Em, G, Am, C, and B7. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/o0M2pn4Nqb8
